When Star was sent to Earth, Marco became her first new friend there. Even though he wasn't so sure about Star at first and didn't like the idea of her staying with him and his family, since Star's magic is "glitchy" and brought him trouble, until the villains from Star's world gives Marco the excitement he longs for as he and Star face them together. Just as Marco teaches Star things about Earth during her stay, she returns the favor by teaching Marco things about her home world, Mewni. As well as the others worlds they come across during their many adventures and evil fighting battles.

In "Here to Help," Star and Marco head down to a pig-goat shack to sort out every single one. While doing so, Star, glad that they're alone together, brings up what Marco said in the Realm of Magic. Unbeknownst to him, he claimed he loves her, which he nervously admits. In fact, he's been feeling this way since they first met, even before the whole Blood Moon Curse. This has gotten a lot stronger overtime, which Marco never said a word about, as he thought Star just wanted to be friends. Ultimately, Star admits she loves him back, and they kiss. With the whole thing cleared up, the happy couple evacuated the pig-goats and headed back to the castle.

When Mina Loveberry attacks Eclipsa and her family, Star and Marco try to stop Mina from doing so while trying to convince Moon that she has made a terrible mistake of siding with the crazy monster hunter, who turns on the former queen and tries to capture them all for caring about monsters. Luckily Hekapoo saves them as she transports the group to the safety of the Tavern at the End of the Multiverse, where Marco watches Star rant about magic being the main reason for all of the bad things that is happening to them. Since magic has brought the two and their friends a lot of trouble in the past, despite the occasions where it has helped them. During Star's magic rant and how they'll be a lot better without it, she climbs into Glossaryck's eyeball without giving Marco a heads-up on what she doing or planning. Star's brief time in Glossaryck's realm allows her to see that she'll succeed in destroying the magic as she looks at her finished tapestry, but Marco was nowhere to be seen on it. Glossaryck explains that once the magic is gone Marco will be sent back to Earth and they'll never be able to travel between one another's worlds again. This fact greatly saddens Star and she tries to find away for Marco to be added to the tapestry in hopes that they'll still be together, but there is nothing she can do and destroying the magic is the only way to stop Mina. Once Star re-joins Marco in the tavern, he asks her if she is alright before Star tells Marco what she must do: Destroy the magic.

At the beginning of "Cleaved", Marco offers to help Star in her task as they go to the Realm of Magic together, and before they go, Marco takes the royal magic wand for defense. Once there, seeing Marco being silly with the pudding Glossaryck gave them makes Star thinks about how much she'll miss his silliness, and has trouble finding the courage to tell Marco what will happen once they destroy the magic. Once Marco realizes that the pudding is protecting their minds from the realm's magic he feeds Star some. While Marco holds the black unicorns off, Star says the whispering spell with Moon, Eclipsa and even baby Meteora. After they completed their task, Star tells Marco to head to the portal that will take him back to Earth as she goes to the one that will take her back to Mewni, but before she leaves the decaying Magic Realm, Star realizes that she doesn't want to leave Marco who feels the same way. Star learns this when she saw him in the actively crumbling Realm of Magic before they embrace each other. After the two woke up in their separate home worlds and see that the remaining magic has a slowly closing portal on both their ends, Star and Marco want their way to it in hopes that they'll be able to use it to be with one another. As they came close to stepping thorough them, however, the remaining magic in their bodies and the strong love they have for each other merges Earth and Mewni together, making their two separate worlds one. After the two realize this and are happy that they'll get to stay together after all, Star and Marco greet one another with a smile.

Fanon[]

Starco is the main ship of the Star vs. the Forces of Evil fandom, dating back to when the show first began, and many were pleased to know that the show's two main heroes get together in the end, since there have been a few signs of attrition and almost became a couple moments before "Here to Help" aired. The way that the series ended has fans asking many questions about their two separate worlds becoming one, despite the fact that it allows Star and Marco to be together without leaving either of their families or home worlds behind.

On AO3, the ship has over 732 fanfics, while FanFiction.net has 351 out of 1.5K fanfics in its Star Vs. The Forces of Evil category. The ship also has a decently sized fanbase on DeviantArt and Tumblr. Some of the ship's earlier fan content, or alternate universes, have a grown up Star making Marco her king when she becomes the Queen of Mewni, along with some fanart referencing their Blood Moon dance.

However, the ship is not free from criticism, with more fans believing the ship to be unhealthy in recent years for a variety of reasons. Many argue that Marco's potential relationships with Jackie Lynn Thomas and Kelly (as well as Star's relationship with Tom) were sacrificed in poorly handled manners in order to make Starco a reality for the series' endgame. Others believe that the trope of Friends to Lovers among male and female main characters in a series had been overdone by that point, and were disappointed when the two ended up in a relationship at the end.
