StaticDust is the slash ship between Vox and Angel Dust from the Hazbin Hotel fandom.
Canon[]
Season One[]
Throughout the first season Vox only mentions Angel by name and doesn't interact with him, since his soul is owned by his fellow Vee, Valentino, and it has been hinted that Vox is partially aware of the "physical relationship" Angel has with the same moth demon that Vox has an on and off relationship with. Although Angel is one of the Vees' biggest earners, Vox was shown to be happy at the thought of Angel quitting from working for Valentino; when he assumed that it might have been the cause of Val's tantrum in "Radio Killed the Video Star." The only reason Vox kept Valentino from murdering Angel, and the other residence of the hotel he moved into, is because the TV demon knew how badly it would affect the Vees' image. At first Vox didn't seem to mind that Angel moved out of the tower, but after learning that his rival Alastor was also at the hotel, Vox asks Val if Angel would be up to becoming their inside man. Because Angel wasn't answering his boss's calls, however, Vox enlisted Sir Pentious to be their spy. That ends up being discovered by none other than Angel, who recognised Vox's logo on the VoxTech camera he caught Pentious planting in Charlie's office. Costing Vox his spy, as Angel exposing Pentious to Charlie led to the reformed snake demon joining the hotel.
The only first season episode the two came close to having some sort of interaction was "Masquerade," as it had Angel see Vox shaking Valentino's hand, from the balcony of his dressing room. Once Vox notices Angel looking at him and Val, his smile falters a little before he teleports away. While Angel is left feeling worse than he already was.
Season Two[]
"New Pentious" revels that Vox is well aware of the abuse Angel suffers under Valentino, having video recordings of the times Val has slapped Angel in public or in private. When Vox told Valentino to stop harming Angel publicly, he was only thinking about the Vees' image rather than Angel's well being. While the laugh Vox tried to hold back when stating that Val hurting Angel is no longer funny, subjects that Vox does find hummer in Angel's suffer, but Vox's plans for the Vees and the hotel requires Hell to see them in a positive light.
Angel confirms that Vox does take pleasure in Valentino hurting Angel during the events of "Hazbin Hotel: Behind the Curtin," as he expresses his dislike at Vox and Velvette being at the hotel. The one place that is his safe place away from the Vees and knows full well of how horrible and cruel Vox is, and tries to warn Charlie but her need to prove Pentious's redemption kept her from listening. Throughout the rest of the interview Charlie invited VoxTek to do, Vox watches Angel being rushed and pressured to be redeemed right before Vox and Vel's eyes, while both overlords didn't care if Angel was able to accomplish redemption or not. After Vox sabotaged the brakes of the train Angel was tasked to save Husk from, and Charlie subjected that has Angel atone for the sin that sent him to Hell, Vox saw Angel's discomfort at the idea and knew why; from knowing what that sin was from Valentino after Angel had told him. Vox uses Angel's sin to question Charlie on weather or not she can redeem a murderer, while taking pleasure in Angel's discomfort and shock as he reveals how he came to know that Angel had killed his own father. Along with him taunting Angel with questions on what provoked him to do so, knowing that Angel's father used to hit him while Angel told him to stop. Afterwards Vox and Velvette altered the recordings of Angel and the rest of the interview in order to make Charlie and the hotel look bad. Velvette also comments Vox for traumatizing Angel, saying that it was a nice touch.
With things going well for the Vees, Vox decides it was time to use Angel in away that would harm Charlie greatly, since his deal with Alastor prevents him from laying a finger on her, and approaches Valentino with the request to "borrow" him. Though this leads to a brief fight between the two overlords as Vox jokes about Val getting jealous of the time he is spending with Angel, but Vox was still able to convince Valentino to bring Angel to him. Angel first thought that he was going to entertain a client when he walked into the motel, that Vox was waiting for him in and then begins to attack Angel. Saying that he had wanted to do this for a long time and then reveals to Angel that he had been under Vox's control the entire time. Acting as Vox's spy within the hotel, since season one, and was the reason Vox has been one step ahead of Charlie. Angel was horrified when he learned this and tries to fight out of Vox's grip, as Vox forces him to look into the mirror reflecting Vox's hypnotic eye in order to place Angel deeper under his control. Placing Angel into a mindless zombie like state, while the Vees help Vox prepare Angel for the big reveal of the weapon Vox convinced Carmilla Carmine to build for him.
Although Angel was able to break free from Vox's mind control in "Curtain Call," the damage was done and chose to remain with the Vees, after Vox was defeated. The things Vox made Angel do, as well hurting Cherri while under his control, has left Angel being overwhelmed with guilt and shattered the illusion of him having any freedom of choice. Along with seeing himself as a danger and thought it best to leave the hotel behind, to protect the friends Vox made him hurt.
Moments[]
- Angel was seen on Vox's monitors in "The Show Must Go On," as he spies on the hotel by drone.
Fanon[]
StaticDust is a rarepairing of the Hazbin Hotel fandom, and because they're both shipped with Valentino it gets commonly rivalled with ValAngel and StaticMoth. Along with creating the common theme of the two competing for Val's attention and viewing one another as rivals, while haters of the ship view Vox teaming up with Val to mistreat Angel. Since the VoxTech security camera seen in the top corner of Angel's dressing room subjects that Val isn't the only Vee who has a hold on Angel, while the camera's presence has led to theories of Vox spying on him within the tower. Just as there is speculation on the possibility of Angel's collar being a shock collar made by Vox. Another group, however, have Angel and Vox bonding over their connections to the moth demon, as well as seeing each other behind Valentino's back.
Due to how the (now deleted and non-canon) Voxtagram accounts indicated that Angel wasn't Valentino's only abuse victim, it had fans feel sympathy for Vox and have Angel show it to him. Along with depicting Angel defending Vox from Val, from knowing the pain he too has suffered from him. The Instagram images also revealed that Vox originally had a pet shark creature-like named Vark, giving fans the idea to have Vark be friends with Angel's pet pig, Fat Nuggets. So, fans can create artwork of Angel and Vox spending time together with their pets. Because of the changes made between the pilot and main series, however, the Voxtagram images that helped the ship began support were no longer considered canon. Disappointing fans, though many still found ways to support the ship.
Once the Vees were revealed to be the main antagonists of season two, StaticDust fans got excited at the idea of seeing canon moments and interactions between Angel and Vox. With brief scenes in both the teaser trailer and official trailer for the second season indicating that they'll get their wish, even though the scenes in question are rather dark. Making people worry that they won't be the only time Vox does something terrible to Angel, with two season one episodes hinting that Vox isn't fond of Angel and the TV Demon is seen as someone with a jealousy complex. That's why the thought of Vox harming Angel or simply treating him poorly is commonly used in fan works.
