Valenwind is the slash between Cid Highwind and Cloud Strife in the Final Fantasy fandom.
Canon[]
Final Fantasy VII[]
Cid and Cloud both have pasts with Shinra. Cid was formerly involved in the space program, before Shinra shut it down. Cloud himself was a former member of Shinra's army. Both left Shinra on rather poor terms, and have a bone to pick with the company.
They first meet when the party visits Rocket Town. Cid joins up with the party when he realizes that his dream to travel to space will likely never come true, and he becomes the pilot on their mission to track down Sephiroth. Cid acquires the Highwind and a crew to further aid in their adventure. When Cloud is poisoned by mako, Tifa decides to stay with him to aid in his recovery. Cid is named the new leader of the party in both of their absences.
Eventually, the party returns to check on Cloud. Seeing that he is doing better, Cid vacates the position of leader and gives it back to Cloud. The group head back to Rocket Town to stop Shinra from trying to blow up Meteor. Aboard the rocket, Cid is trapped by a faulty oxygen tank. He tells Cloud to escape without him, but Cloud remains behind and he and Shera help to rescue Cid. Everyone gathers in an escape pod and heads back to Earth without any casualties.
Final Fantasy VII Remake[]
Cid is a possible "date" in the Golden Saucer, although it is a group date including Vincent Valentine and Cait Sith. Cid seems reluctant to go out together, but tries to put on a smile. He falls asleep in the audience while Cloud performs in Loveless. Later, the four head to the Skywheel. Cid is initially excited to board, but loses interest when he realizes just how slow the ride is and that he can't steer it. Cloud is equally unimpressed with the ride and his companions. Cait Sith tries to encourage everyone to enjoy the date, but Cid appears bored and Cloud tells Cait to "zip it".
Kingdom Hearts[]
Cid brings Cloud back to Radiant Gardens from Olympus at the end of Kingdom Hearts. The two are both living in Radiant Gardens in Kingdom Hearts II and share a number of friends, but are not seen interacting with each other.
Fanon[]
Strifewind is a rarepair in the fandom. As the protagonist Cloud has a number of love interests, both canonical and fanon, and Cid is the human party member that he is shipped with the least. This is potentially because they have very little screen time together when compared to other members of the party. Cid in the original games is also rather abrasive, and some fans find him to be unlikable. It is possible that the popularity of this ship might grow upon the release of the final game in the Remake trilogy which will give potential for more scenes between Cloud and Cid.
Shippers enjoy the dynamic between the two characters, with both of them being seen as "grumpy". Some also find shipping two blondes together to be appealing simply for aesthetic purposes.
There are currently 25 works for the pairing on AO3. It is slightly more popular as a platonic ship, with 26 works.
