It is unknown how and when Big Mac and Sugar Belle became acquainted, except that it occurred before the season seven episode “Hard to Say Anything.” By the time of that episode, Big Mac had begun delivering apples to Sugar Belle at her bakery in a village some distance away from his hometown of Ponyville. He had also developed a serious crush on Sugar Belle, to the point that he was on his fifth delivery run to her in the course of a week at the start of the episode. However, it soon becomes evident to Big Mac’s sister Apple Bloom and her friends that Sugar Belle is quite welcoming to Big Mac.

Observing her love struck brother, Apple Bloom quickly deduced the truth, and Big Mac readily admitted his feelings when Apple Bloom and her friends approached him shortly thereafter. Big Mac was less enthusiastic when Apple Bloom suggested that he should share his feelings with Sugar Belle herself. He was intrigued, however, when the Crusaders voiced the belief that Sugar Belle’s recurring Apple orders were an expression of her interest in him. However, when he goes back to Sugar Belle to broach the subject, he discovers that he isn’t the only stallion interested in her.

Seeing the suave approach of his rival, Feather Bangs, Big Mac-a pony of few words-becomes discouraged and prepares to leave. When questioned, he expresses the belief that Sugar Belle wouldn’t pick him as a partner when she could be with Feather Bangs. Apple Bloom becomes determined to help her brother, though he quickly forbids the Crusaders from using any love potions after a previous experience. Big Mac was soon faced with other disturbing prospects, such as the Crusaders attempting to help him woo Sugar Belle by staging a saddlebag snatching.

This poorly conceived plot failed, but Big Mac was convinced to make another questionable attempt to win Sugar Belle’s affections: “waking” her from sleep with a kiss. As Big Mac prepared to do so, Sugar Belle woke up herself and was alarmed. The only thing that saved the situation was, unfortunately, Feather Bangs swooping in on his own latest attempt to woo Sugar Belle and carrying her off. Discouraged as he was, Big Mac was convinced to try something else: writing and performing a romantic song for Sugar Belle.

Unfortunately, Feather Bangs had come up with the same idea, and the two stallions ended up in a musical battle. Worse, the altercation led to the destruction of the display case in Sugar Belle’s bakery. Exasperated and angry with both of her admirers, Sugar Belle exploded at both of them and demanded that they leave her alone. Ashamed, Big Mac went off by himself.

Finding him, the Crusaders expressed bewilderment at the failure of their grand, fairytale-inspired gestures. It was Big Mac himself who pointed out the error in their thinking. They had been acting as though Sugar Belle were some imaginary princess, instead of a real individual. When the Crusaders then suggested that they do something Sugar Belle would actually appreciate, Big Mac was struck by inspiration.

The Crusaders managed to bring Sugar Belle back to her bakery, where she was initially displeased to see Big Mac. However, Big Mac then revealed what he had done: built her a new, larger display case to replace the one he’d had a part in breaking. Sugar Belle is visibly touched by the gesture, particularly as she had bemoaned the old case’s lack of space while speaking to Big Mac earlier. Recognizing his genuine regard for her, Sugar Belle declares his gift “the sweetest thing anypony's ever done for [her].”

Big Mac, tongue-tied, is awkwardly attempting to respond when Sugar Belle stops him. Obviously amused, she reveals that she does, in fact, have an interest in him. The Crusaders, making their presence known, explain their role in things to Sugar Belle and apologize for the whole debacle. Big Mac and Sugar Belle are soon rubbing their noses together affectionately, signaling the beginning of their relationship.

SugarMac was established as a pairing fairly late in the Friendship is Magic series, and was the latest in a series of suggested pairings involving Big Mac. Some fans favored CheeriMac, the pairing of him and Cheerilee, in spite of the fact that their affection was based on both of them being under the influence of love potion. Others favored MarbleMac or other pairings, such as matching Big Mac up with one of his sister Applejack’s friends in the Mane 6. In spite of this, the pairing seems to have been generally well received by the fandom.

There are 16 works featuring the pairing on AO3. It is the top romantic ship for both characters.
