SugiNagi is the slash ship between Tomohito Sugino and Nagisa Shiota from the Assassination Classroom fandom.

Canon

Sugino and Nagisa are best friends and classmates in Kunugigaoka Junior High School’s Class 3-E. They are close seatmates in the same column, with their respective seat roll call numbers being 13 for Sugino and 11 for Nagisa respectively, as seen in the Class 3-E seat chart in which Sugino sits right behind Nagisa. Due to their close seating arrangements, they appear in various scenes together throughout the series. They also are often seen hanging out together.

Season 1

First Semester

In “Baseball Time”, Sugino is attempting to assassinate Koro-sensei with a baseball embedded with Anti-Sensei BB Pellets, he thanks Nagisa for assisting him by providing information. However, the assassination attempt fails, leaving Sugino in a dejected state, causing Nagisa to worry. During the rest of the class, Sugino is moping about his baseball techniques while Kayano mentions and talks to Nagisa about the assassination attempt. Nagisa is seen glancing back at him in concern. On the next school day during lunch time, Nagisa leaves the classroom needing to turn his papers in, he takes notice of Sugino and Koro-sensei holding a conversation outside at the old main campus’ backyard. Nagisa runs outside trying to stop his teacher, believing that Sugino was being lectured about yesterday’s assassination attempt. Nagisa is in shock as Sugino is held up in the air by their teacher. When Koro-sensei tells Sugino that he will never be like his idol, Nagisa suddenly snaps and defends Sugino as he thinks that Koro-sense’s insults were due to them being students of Class 3-E. It turns out to be a misunderstanding. Koro-sensei says that Sugino should be working on his own pitching style ("assassination style"), because of his elbows and wrists being a lot more flexible than that of his idol’s. Sugino cheers up because of this in which Nagisa glances at him and smiles. Some time afterwards, outside at the old main campus’ backyard, Sugino and Nagisa are seen practicing the new curveball technique together, with Nagisa praising Sugino that the baseball "practically disappeared”. Sugino chuckles, then says to Nagisa that he won’t be giving up on both baseball or assassination. A while after as Koro-sensei is replanting the class' tulips and being scolded by both Kataoka and Okano, Nagisa is writing down notes on Koro-sensei’s “weaknesses”. Nagisa doubts a bit about the list, but Sugino reaches out in optimism and grabs the notebook, reading them aloud. Sugino comments and Nagisa reacts sheepishly.

In “School Trip Time, 1st Period”, Sugino and Nagisa are in the same group with Kayano, Karma, Okuda, and Kanzaki for the assassination attempts while spending their school trip in Kyoto. At the beginning of the episode, outside in the backyard the students were sitting on the ground while listening to Karasuma announcing about their school trip and explaining the task in which Sugino and Nagisa are sitting next to each other. Later when Nagisa is busy choosing his groupmates, Sugino was already one of the first members to join his group alongside Kayano. Sugino also briefly whispers to a calm Nagisa as he was wary of Karma joining them. A little while after, Nagisa’s group is formed and gathered around a table, they plan and discuss excitingly about their assassination route. On the day of the school trip, after they have entered the train, Nagisa, Sugino, and the rest of their group look over at their classmates in which Sugino also questions where Koro-sensei is. Sugino and Nagisa jump back in surprise as Koro-sensei suddenly smashes his face against the window. A little bit later, Nagisa, Sugino, and their group are playing a game of cards. After arriving in Kyoto and leaving their luggage at the inn they stayed in, Nagisa’s group is exploring the city. At a busy bridge, Sugino talks to Nagisa as he thinks the tall building with multiple windows could be a good assassination spot, Nagisa wonders if the snipers would be able to see it. They group ends up talking about which method to use to kill Koro-sensei with. Sugino then admits that he didn’t want to focus on assassination during their school trip and Nagisa replies, which the scene changes to the group visiting a monument nearby a restaurant, where a known assassination took place. Nagisa mentions that Kyoto is the heart of Japan and known for various assassination in their country’s history. Sugino acknowledges it, also saying it is like a real assassination vacation. Following their planned out route, the group walks into a dark alleyway, and they are suddenly ambushed by a group of high school thugs. One of the high school thugs kicks Sugino in the stomach, who falls backwards into Nagisa, causing both of them to fall onto the ground and Nagisa also gets knocked out unconscious. The result of the group failing to fight back led to Kanzaki and Kayano getting kidnapped. As the remaining quartet try to figure out a way to rescue Kayano and Kanzaki with Koro-sensei’s guidebooks, Nagisa reads one of the instructions aloud in which Sugino comments irritably. A little while later they arrive to rescue Kayano and Kanzaki. As they enter the room, Nagisa is seen reading out a different instruction from the guidebook aloud with Sugino standing next to his right ready to fight. The leader of the high school thugs warns of more of his back-up coming, Nagisa and Sugino turn back around on high alert. Koro-sensei suddenly arrives who also has already dealt with them and come to help with the rescue. Sugino and Nagisa, alongside Karma and Okuda, defeat the high school thugs by knocking them out unconscious with Koro-sensei’s guidebooks. The whole situation is resolved. Nagisa, Sugino, and the rest of them end up walking back home to the inn.

In “School Trip Time, 2nd Period”, at the arcade area of the inn, Sugino and Nagisa, alongside Kayano and Okuda, are watching Kanzaki play an arcade game with ease. A little while afterwards Sugino and Nagisa, alongside Okajima who complained about the inn’s low budget while the rest of their year stayed at a luxurious hotel, are walking together in the hallway. Nagisa tries to calm his classmate down, saying that it is more fun this way. The three boys suddenly spot Nakamura and Fuwa sneaking, then hiding behind the barely opened door which leads to a bathroom. Nagisa calls the two girls out, asking what they are doing in which Nakamura answers him. Okajima suddenly exclaims how it is “their job”, Sugino and Nagisa turn at him with smirking expressions, which Nagisa also says that it is no one’s job. The five of them end up entering the bathroom together, finding Koro-sensei who was busy taking one while covered up in a lot of bubbles. Sugino and Nagisa have a done expression on their faces, with the former asking why their teacher was taking a bubble bath while the latter reminded him not to use anything inside the baths. After Koro-sensei quickly escapes from them through the bathroom window, the remaining quintet stayed there unamused. Nagisa then says that he is learning new stuff about his class. Sugino suggests that they head back to their bedrooms. The scene changes to the boys of the class, who all are sitting and talking about the voting results on the sheet of paper with the names of the girls they liked within their class. Maehara suddenly asks Nagisa who he likes. Nagisa is unable to respond with a complete sentence, stammering on his words, which Sugino takes quick notice of and changes the subject, asking Maehara who he likes.

SugiNagi is considered a rare pair ship in the fandom. On A03, it currently has under 10 fan works depicting a romantic relationship between them. Though there are 50+ fan works that depict the platonic variation of their relationship. Rival ships include Karmagisa, NagiKae for Nagisa and SugiKan for Sugino. Despite this, the pair has gained a niche following. This partially stems from their close friendship in canon, where people rather enjoyed their dynamic with one another.

• Sugino and Nagisa’s image/motif colors, as seen in various sets of merch, are two different shades of blue, making blue the color they are both commonly associated with. It is also noticeable in their hair and eye colors from their anime color palette as well.
• In the official “Art” ranking, on the boys’ side, Sugino is ranked 3rd and Nagisa is ranked 5th.
• In Karasuma's 2nd report card, under the "Stealth Skill" ranking, Nagisa is ranked 2nd and Sugino is ranked 4th.
• Nagisa and Sugino’s birthdays are in summer. Nagisa’s birthday is on July 20th and Sugino’s birthday is on August 23rd.
• The JP VAs for Nagisa (Mai Fuchigami) and Sugino (Yoshitaka Yamaya) are 2/6 of the singers for the Class 3-E Group 4 version of the opening theme song “Seishun Satsubatsuron” which was used for the anime season 1 episodes 7 and 8, also known as the Kyoto School Trip arc, respectively. Also reflecting on them being in the spotlight of that arc.
  • Their JP VAs were also 2/6 of the singers for the special Animelo Summer Live 2015 version of the Class 3-E Song Unit, known as Class 3-E Summer Unit, having sung “Seishun Satsubatsuron” live together as well. Their performance was on the 2nd day of the live concert.
• They have a height difference of 14 cm, with Sugino being 173 cm tall and Nagisa being 159 cm tall.
  • After the 7-years timeskip, as adults they have a height difference of 20 cm, with Sugino being 180 cm tall and Nagisa being 160 cm tall. Their timeskip heights were confirmed on a very wide poster which was promoting "Assassination Classroom the Movie: 365 Days".
• In the "Exclusive Behind The Scenes Data" by the mangaka (Yusei Matsui) in Sugino's Character Profile, he first met Nagisa when they were both on Beautification Committee duty. It was when they both met each other again in Class 3-E that they became fast friends.
  • It is also written that Sugino and Nagisa often walk together to school in the mornings as well as when they go home. This is due to Sugino's way home passing by the same direction as the train station that Nagisa always goes to.
