- You always ask to look at my photo whenever I take any pictures of AUBREY.
Do I... maybe... sense a little crush? - —Basil teasing Sunny about his crush
Sunburn is the het ship between Sunny and Aubrey from the Omori fandom.
Canon[]
In-Game[]
Sunny and Aubrey share a close bond as childhood friends. In Memory Lane, Basil notes that Sunny often asks to see the photos he takes of Aubrey, teasing that there might be a little crush on Sunny’s side. Caught off guard, Sunny feels his ears flush red, embarrassed that Basil has noticed. Basil, however, promises to keep his secret.
One of Sunny's cherished memories, found in the Lost Library, is of a time when his head accidentally fell on Aubrey’s shoulder as they were driving home from the beach. In the Backstage, Aubrey fondly recalls how they used to sit on the swings together, with her talking to Sunny for hours. She admits to feeling lonely before he and their friends entered her life.
In the dream world, Dream Aubrey has a one-sided crush on Omori, likely reflecting Sunny's own feelings for Aubrey that he never expressed. When Omori first appears, Aubrey eagerly rushes over, saying they had hoped he would come by soon and inviting him to play cards. Later, Dream Aubrey cheerfully asks Omori to help find her missing stuffed toy, taken by Kel, and is visibly happy when he brings it back.
At a picnic, Aubrey playfully suggests that she and Omori would make a good couple. During battles, if Aubrey looks to Omori and he doesn’t respond, her follow-up attack becomes stronger. By the end of the Headspace segments, once their follow-up attacks are fully leveled, Omori looks back at her, and Aubrey’s attack grows even stronger, she attacks with extra strength out of joy. In a touching moment on a couch in the Junkyard, Aubrey leans her head on Omori’s shoulder. Later, when they encounter the Slime Girls, Aubrey fiercely defends Omori, angrily telling them not to touch him.
In the real world, when Aubrey and Sunny reunite, the encounter is tense—he accidentally stabs her, perhaps out of habit from their dream-world battles, rather than from intentional malice. Furious, Aubrey calls him a "psychopath" for carrying a knife, and her anger towards him is fueled by her resentment over feeling abandoned by her friends after Mari's death.
In a late-game moment, Aubrey and Sunny talk on the swings, where Aubrey sincerely apologizes and expresses how much she cares about him. She explains that her anger was mixed with shock at seeing him again and frustration over his absence after Mari’s death. Throughout the game, their interactions are often neutral, with Aubrey's anger primarily aimed at Kel and Basil, and Sunny never speaking harshly to her. In their private moments, they often blush in each other’s presence. Later, at Sunny’s house, Aubrey shyly tries to talk to him but is interrupted by Kel. When she later apologizes to Sunny, Kel, and Hero, Sunny blushes as he’s drawn close to Aubrey in a group hug. In the sleepover scene, Aubrey asks Sunny if he’ll come visit sometime.
In the tag events, Dreamworld Aubrey is notably happier when tagging Omori compared to others, while in the real world, Aubrey seems less annoyed tagging Sunny than she is with Kel or Hero.

In the manga, there is an added scene between the two that isn’t present in the game, where Sunny covers Aubrey’s ears in the church to prevent her from hearing the townspeople gossiping about her. Additionally, in chapter 13, Aubrey invites Sunny to come live with her in the city, saying “Moving to the city would do you a lot of good… Why don’t you just get out of that small town and come live with me?”
Quotes[]
- “What a HUNK!”
- — Headspace Aubrey about OMORI
- “Hey, Sunny... Sorry, I was so mean to you before. I think seeing you caught me by surprise... though I guess that's a pretty crappy excuse.
I hope you've been doing okay and stuff... I'm sure everything was really hard for you to deal with. Sometimes I think I was the one who should've been there for you.
I don't know if we'll really get over Mari's death... but it's okay to take it slow. To allow yourself to feel every emotion... and to have patience. A-Anyway, I just want you to know... that I still care about you and stuff.
I've been thinking about this since I saw you, but I think you've been looking a little pale... and kind of thin, too. After you move, promise you'll go outside more often, okay?” - — Aubrey to Sunny (SUNNY ROUTE)
Fanon[]
In the fandom, Sunburn (Sunny x Aubrey) stands out as by far the most popular ship in the fandom, followed by pairings like Sunflower (Sunny x Basil), Kimbrey (Kim x Aubrey), and HeroMari. Despite this competition, Sunburn remains one of the most beloved ships, with over 1,900+ works on Archive of Our Own, making it the third most-written ship after Sunflower and HeroMari (Hero x Mari). Sunburn fanfictions are the most viewed in the fandom along with HeroMari fanfictions, with “Sunny and Aubrey’s Heart-Throbbing Love Life” having over 120,000 hits and “How We Subsist” having over 90,000 hits on Archive of Our Own. It is widely considered the most popular ship due to Sunburn fanfics having the most views on AO3, Sunburn having the largest ship subreddit on Reddit, and Sunburn-related posts getting the most traction on OMORI’s main subreddit as well as winning multiple popularity polls hosted there.
Some fans speculate that Aubrey may have, or once had, a crush on Sunny, though this hasn’t been confirmed in canon. This theory is a common headcanon among Sunburn fans, who view Aubrey’s childhood bond with Sunny as a basis for deeper feelings. In contrast, some fans believe that Omori (Sunny’s dream-world alter ego) and Headspace Aubrey might make a better pairing due to their dynamic in the dream world. This preference partly stems from how much Aubrey’s attitude has changed in the real world, which some interpret as her becoming “rude” or distant. However, as the game progresses, players come to understand that Aubrey’s anger is rooted in grief and abandonment—feelings that intensified after Mari’s death, leading her to feel isolated from Sunny and their friends. This insight has made her character more sympathetic, adding complexity to Sunburn as a ship.

- People also believe it is because in the books in the Lost Library, one of the excerpts describes the friend group driving back from a day at the beach. During the car ride, Sunny's head accidentally drops onto Aubrey's shoulder. He pretends to be asleep and feels the sting of a sunburn on his nose. It says that this moment made Sunny very happy, and he promises to never forget it.
- A few are that it comes from the first three letters of Sunny’s name, and burn being from his n and Aubrey’s u, b, and r, the fact that Aubrey was a former bully and bullies tend to “burn” their victims in some ways, and because of Aubrey having an "explosive" personality.
- Some believe that the "burn" in "Sunburn" comes from the fact that the name "Aubrey" is close to the name "auburn."
- It could also be because Aubrey is harshly hot, leaving a sunburn.
- Some believe it is because of Aubrey's hair since it's pink and when you get sunburnt, your skin becomes like sort of pinkish-red.
- The crack-ship name or joke ship name "Skincancer", comes from the fact that sunburns may cause skin cancer, and "Sunburn" is their main ship name.
