Sunlow is the femslash ship between Sundew and Willow from the Wings of Fire fandom.
Canon[]
In The Lost Continent, Sundew is complaining when she almost mentions Willow, asking aloud what they would think. But she cuts herself off and replaces it with “-my tribe”. This is the first time Willow is mentioned, until The Hive Queen where Sundew says she understands Swordtail’s obsession with Luna because she has one true love too, and she appears and introduces herself in the epilogue.
In The Poison Jungle, Sundew’s POV book, Willow becomes an important character. In chapter one, Sundew is flying to the LeafWing’s home the Poison Jungle, bringing her friends Blue, Cricket, Swordtail and the young HiveWing dragonet Bumblebee. With each wingbeat drawing closer to the Poison Jungle, a small Jade frog in a pouch thumps against her chest, a reminder of a dragon she’s “not supposed to think about”. The books says that she brought it with her everywhere, and as long as her her parents didn’t know what it meant, they couldn’t do anything about it.
After having a short conversation with Blue and Swordtail telling them about the Poison jungle, Sundew thinks about this ‘Dragon she’s not supposed to think about’ again and internally denies thinking about them.
They reach the Poison Jungle, and Sundew tries to guides her friends to the village but they come across a group of LeafWings, hiding in the trees. Mandrake is being forced by his Father, Wolfsbane and sister, Nettle to try to kill a panther using Leafspeak. This makes Sundew angry; she was in charge of hunting prey for big feasts. She thinks Belladonna hosted a feast without her and was making Mandrake replace her out of spite, as if she didn’t care if Sundew was there or not even though she knew Sundew had nowhere else to go. Sundew then wonders if she would fly away, if she could. Her talons go to the pouch with the Jade frog in it, and she decides no, because she has a purpose; destroy the HiveWings and get vengeance.
Sundew saves Mandrake and traps the panther. When she calls for her friends to reveal themselves, the LeafWings freak out at the sight of the SilkWings and especially the HiveWings. Sundew talks to them and Wolfsbane and Nettle go back to the village to tell Belladonna, leaving Mandrake with Sundew and her friends. She kills the panther using a berry deadly to mammals which impresses both her friends and Mandrake. Swordtail asks if all LeafWings are as shouty as Nettle and Wolfsbane, and Mandrake says that everyone but him. Sundew thinks that’s not true, touching the Jade frog through the pouch again, “but he’s never met the others”.
Cricket introduces Blue, Swordtail, Bumblebee and herself to Mandrake, and he introduces himself as well; as Sundew’s fiancé.
Chapter four begins with the group in shock, asking Sundew what he meant. Blue says he didn’t think that a dragon like Mandrake would be Sundew’s “true love”, and both Sundew and Mandrake deny this quickly. Cricket begins to say “but…I thought…” and Sundew remembers with horror when she had told Cricket that she had one true love, too. Sundew realizes that she was just about to “spill the biggest secret she was keeping from her tribe” and she quickly does an insane person shuffle and tells Cricket to stop thinking what she was thinking.
The other dragons are very confused at this, but Cricket relents, asking how Sundew could have a fiancé at age six(dragon years, an adult is 7). Sundew tells them that her and Mandrake had been engaged since they hatched since they both had the strongest Leafspeak of the tribe, although Sundew’s was much more powerful then Mandrake, and the most powerful in centuries. That’s why Belladonna and Hemlock had gotten together to have her; they both had the strongest Leafspeak of their generation.
Fanon[]
Sunlow is very popular, being a main series canon LGBT ship with actual plot importance and spotlight, unlike Anemarin. Fans of this ship enjoy the contrast in personality, Sundew being aggressive and driven by revenge and Willow being calm and friendly. It’s much preferred to Sundrake, the ship between Sundew and her ex-fiancé.
However, being a third arc character this ship is not as popular as the first and second arc ships, like Glorybringer, Cleril, Sunnyflight and Moonbli, which are other canon ships.
