- “You know, SUNNY. You were pretty awesome back there...”
- — Kel to Sunny during Two Days Left
Suntan is the slash ship between Sunny and Kel from the Omori fandom.
Canon[]
Real World[]
Kel is childhood best friends with Sunny and each of them is the other's first friend ever, they are also neighbors along with Hero. When Kel found out Sunny was moving away, he kept calling every week for months and eventually started to knock when Sunny had 3 days to stay. On the first day Kel knocks on Sunny's door asking to hang out like old times sounding kind of melancholic, hoping for Sunny to answer. If the player chooses the option do nothing, Kel will continue to knock for a long while even though he isn't really expecting an answer. If Sunny does answer the door, Kel seems to be nervous at first, even having to turn around for a second to scratch his head, but he eager to hang out with Sunny and quickly warms up to him. The two later on go to Hobbeez.
At Hobbeez, Kel lets Sunny choose the gift for Hero as he thinks Sunny is better at picking gifts. When Kel asks to "borrow" 20 dollars from Sunny to buy the gift, Sunny easily gives them to him, despite being familiar with Kel not usually paying him back.
Kel worries greatly for Sunny's safety, like preventing him from walking in the street at all costs, or taking away his knife in fear of Sunny getting himself hurt.
After the church fight with Aubrey and obtaining the photo album, Kel tries to brighten up the dull mood. Kel might've recognised that the situation may have been very stressful for Sunny, and while he is aware that it is not the perfect time for a high five, he offers a high five anyway to make Sunny feel a bit better.
When Kel starts defending Basil, Kim points out that he's acting "all high and mighty", and while it was implied that he does stand up to The Hooligans often, Kim's dialogue implies that he wasn't acting all that confident before, which means that Sunny's presence motivates him and maybe that he wants to impress Sunny with his determined demeanour.
When Aubrey makes fun of Sunny for staying in his "own little bubble" for 4 years, Kel gets angry and is quick to defend Sunny. It can be speculated that at this point, Kel was scared, because he just got Sunny outside, and he's afraid that what Aubrey said might ruin it.
Sunny's attack raises three whole tiers from Kel's sheer encouragement. Another thing during fights is that Kel and Sunny can tend to each other's wounds using the first aid kit.
Kel also trusts Sunny a lot even after 4 years of not speaking. When they're visiting Mari's grave on THREE DAYS LEFT, Kel opens up to Sunny about what happened on the first year after Mari died, he then says that he's never told that to anyone else before.
When Polly invites the two of them for dinner, Kel urges Sunny to accept as it's "free dinner", most likely because Kel may have noticed that Sunny's gotten thinner and just doesn't want to directly point it out, and instead, subtly tries to help him.
By the end of the day on THREE DAYS LEFT when Kel walks Sunny home, Kel cautiously says that he can tell that Sunny hasn't talked to anyone for a while, but he quickly reassures him that there's nothing wrong with that, and that all it takes is just a bit of practice.
If Sunny tries to go back inside the house before the day is over, Kel stops him feeling alarmed, telling him that there is still so much to do.
Whenever Sunny takes a job in Faraway, Kel gently reminds him to work hard, and the way he says it shows that he really means it and doesn't say tell him that out of courtesy.
On TWO DAYS LEFT, Kel told Sunny that he thinks it would be more fun if they ran errands together, and while they were doing that Kel would talk to him about little things like how Hero got his nickname, or that the bakery belongs to Mikhael's family.
When you enter Hobbeez on TWO DAYS LEFT, Kel reminisces about how the two of them used to sneak out at night to go to Hobbeez. As an afterthought, Kel comments that they "were pretty adventurous back then" with a deep blush and a nervous laugh.
When the two go to Kel's house to deliver the things they bought, Kel suggests that Sunny goes in first so his mom forgets to yell at him from the excitement of seeing Sunny, Sunny complies and does as he says saving Kel from the lecture. Once they're in the house Kel also seems really excited to show Sunny his room, especially the basketball hoop and the boombox which Sunny seems to know that Kel always wanted.
Kel told Sunny how he was pretty awesome for jumping in the lake to save Basil. Kel says how Sunny deserves some recognition too. He then offers Sunny an high-five. (The player has an option to pick whether Sunny should accept the high-five or not. You can get two achievements for high-fiving Kel but only one for not high-fiving Kel.)
When Sunny, Kel and Hero finally enter Sunny's house again, Kel suggests they stay over for the night, asking when would be the next time they'd get to spend the night with Sunny like this.
On ONE DAY LEFT, after they go outside Sunny's house, Kel sincerely thanks Sunny for spending his last few days with him and offers him a high five.
If Sunny talks to Kel's dad in the picnic on ONE DAY LEFT, he'll suggest that Sunny visits every so often as Kel would be lonely without him, Kel then tells him that he's embarrassing him, and the way he says it indicates that what his dad's saying is true. His dad then bursts into laughter.
Talking to Mincy on ONE DAY LEFT after having interacted with her everyday, she gives Sunny and Kel a sketch she made of them together, and she also comments that they are such a funny pair. Kel then says that this is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to them.
At the tree stump, Kel apologises to Sunny for being a crappy friend and not being there for him as much as he wished to. However, before confronting Basil, Sunny notes "Kel has always been there for you. And even though he's a bit reckless at times, you know he has a good heart. More than anything, he just wants everyone around him to be happy. He has always been someone you can count on to lift your spirits. You will really miss him." completely contradicting Kel's thoughts on himself.
Mari's death impacted Sunny's mental health very negatively, yet Kel is shown to have a positive influence on Sunny's life, seeing Kel was the person that could make Sunny leave his self isolation, and also encourages him to get involved with and interact with other people. It's also reasonable to think Sunny and Kel would be more stable/healthy compared to some other Omori pairings, though this argument does have a couple of holes.
Headspace[]
After Omori leaves White Space and talks to Kel, Kel seems extra excited to show him his new pet rock Hector!
During the hide-and-seek game that Berly forced everyone to play, Omori's friends are worried about him since he doesn't like to be alone. However, Kel is the only one who actively tries to keep Omori company by hiding somewhere obvious on purpose. He then helps Omori continue looking for the rest of the kids after telling him to not tell Berly about this.
At some point, Aubrey (supposedly Sunny's past crush) suggests that she and Omori go on an adventure together, just the two of them, but Kel immediately disagrees. The adventure with Omori and Aubrey never ends up happening, but it happens in Last Resort with Kel instead, and since this is all in Sunny's mind, it shows who he really wants to spend time with.
And in Last Resort, there are actually a lot of interruptions and extra things you have to do so you can find the rest. Like Kel having to use the bathroom out of the blue, having to look for a key card to reach the floor Aubrey's on, and having to backtrack again to get Berly a water bottle in order to pass. It almost seems like all of this is just stalling, and that Sunny just doesn't want their adventure to end.
Besides Mari (in the Sunny route) and Basil in Blackspace, Kel is the only person Omori even went on a one on one adventure with.
In the Junkyard break-time, when the friends are sitting on a couch while looking at the moon, Aubrey rests her head on Omori, but Omori immediately leans away and rests his head on Kel instead. When Hero notices him, Omori slowly leans away again most likely because he's shy.
When the friend group fails to find Basil, Aubrey states that she misses Basil brushing her hair and expectantly asks Omori if he would brush it for her, Kel purposefully interjects seemingly jealous of Aubrey and points out that Basil used to remind him to wash his hands, implying that he wants Omori to wash his hands. Omori never brushes Aubrey's hair but he does wash Kel's hands in Last Resort.
Memory Lane[]
When examining the toy cars at Sunny's house in Memory Lane, Sunny notes, "Some small toy cars, KEL must have forgotten to take them home again." However he doesn't seem annoyed by the fact. Usually when kids forget their toys at a friend's house, they come by again to get them, so Sunny might have been looking forward to seeing him again soon. Also, when inspecting the couch, Sunny notes, "A nice big couch, perfect for falling asleep. I can never seem to sit through a whole movie." And it's regularly mentioned that Kel is usually the first to fall asleep wherever, so it can be speculated that they'd rest on each other while watching a movie as they drift to sleep. Sunny mentions that him and Kel knocked over a floor lamp on accident once which implies they must've been playing together.
In the Treehouse, Kel seems embarrassed about Sunny taking a look at his cards as he doesn't want him to see him losing.
- “D-Don't look, SUNNY... It's... It's too horrible!”
- — Kel to Sunny in the Treehouse
When talking to Mari in the Hangout Spot's picnic, she comments, "You looked so peaceful sleeping there..." The photo Basil took depicts Sunny and Kel sleeping next to each other with Kel's hand resting on Sunny's back. He probably feels at ease near Kel.
In the rain scene when Sunny is asked if pink would look good on Aubrey, there's an option for Sunny to disagree, probably considering siding with Kel to not make him feel weird. Kel considers trying out the Pet Rocks game since Sunny and Basil have been playing it and then suggests to Sunny that they go to Hobbeez later and check out any new stuff. While the photo that Sunny wanted to look at had Aubrey, it also had Kel peeking from the right.
Kel mentioned that he had to wake up early in the morning (despite hating mornings) to deliver newpapers everyday for three months just to save up for Sunny's gift. Also, while Hero and Mari worked in the bakery together and Basil and Aubrey sold lemonade, Kel did his job alone, so maybe if the gift wasn't for Sunny himself, he would've done his job alongside Sunny.
At the end of Memory Lane, Kel says that they don't have to miss out on each other anymore, and that he wants to always be there for Sunny if he'd just let him. He also reassures him that "just because you did something bad, doesn't mean you're a bad person." He says he hopes it isn't goodbye and believes they'll always be best friends.
Photo Album[]
Both the Headspace and the Real World photo albums hint towards either one of them (or both) having feelings for the other. Most of the Headspace polaroids are slight conversions of the already existing Real World polaroids, and a lot of the ones Sunny chose to recreate in Headspace (as well as newly added photos for the console release) are interactions between Omori and Kel.
For the Headspace and Real World overlapping polaroids in the photo album, it opens with one of Kel and Sunny holding up a flower crown that Mari had made. Half of both of their faces show and Kel's cheeks are flushed, more so than they usually are in-game. He is blushing a lot more in the Real World variation of it. They are leaning towards each other with their heads close together. In the picnic photo where Omori/Sunny is napping, Kel rests his hand on top of him as he is fast asleep as well. In Mari's selfie picnic photo, it seems as if they are sitting next to each other. The caption of the photo of Mari and Aubrey putting the flower crown on Basil's head reads "OMORI/SUNNY and KEL gave up on making flower crowns and ran off, but AUBREY and I got the hang of it really fast!" They are also standing next to each other in the photo of their feet in a circle.
For the Headspace only polaroids, Basil takes a photo of the main party in which Kel rests his arm on Omori's shoulder and is leaning towards him with his cheeks tinted. Kel sits next to Omori on the old couch in the Junkyard in the photo where they are skygazing, his hand is placed behind Omori. In the photo where Kel is sorrowing over losing at slots, Omori is comforting him with a hand on his shoulder and is glaring at the machine.
There are a lot of photos in the Real World that show how close the two are. The (3/10) photo displays Sunny, Kel, Aubrey and Basil cuddling with Sunny's stuffed animals in bed. Kel is the only one without a stuffed animal, instead cuddling Sunny, blushing with his eyes closed and a huge smile on his face, Sunny's cheeks are also reddened. In the (4/29) photo where Kel is catching the rain with his tongue, Sunny looks to be playfully telling him off with a fond look in his eye. On (5/25) they both photobombed the photo of Mari and Aubrey together, also, the caption mentions that Sunny got a lemon popsicle while Kel got an orange popsicle, meaning they both got a citrus flavour. The beach photo on (6/22) of them getting tanned shows them on tanning benches next to each other. The two of them are also in two of the polaroids from Sunny's birthday (7/20), one with Kel behind Sunny as Sunny blows out his candles, and the other one in which Kel's hand is on Sunny's back as Sunny cuddles with Mewo in the box. The photo is captioned "SUNNY won't leave the box, so KEL put a food bowl inside. I guess this box will be SUNNY and MEWO's new home." On (8/4), they are shown to be hunting for beetles together.

Fanon[]
Suntan is a popular ship within the Omori fandom. While ships like Sunflower and Sunburn are more popular, Suntan is actually growing and is starting to get there! It also tends to get supported by Photobomb shippers. It is usually shipped from the love bench teaser and Kel and Sunny being good friends in general, like how Kel went to check up on Sunny. Even though it has been 4 years since they last talked. And the fact that they are together most of the time in both Headspace and (especially) the Real World. Fans of the pair often describe them as "cute" and very "fruity", sometimes they even joke about some situations and ironically say that they are "just dudes being bros" even though what they're describing is far from platonic. Fans interpret that Kel may have had a crush on Sunny due to some potential hints in the game. As for this, it helped the ship gain a lot of popularity from the fandom. Some realize, that Kel could be a positive influence on Sunny. Some also think that Kel would be the first one to forgive Sunny after confessing the truth to the friend group, however it isn't confirmed yet as there is no second game for Omori. The two have lots of work made for them like fanfics, short comics, or illustrations.
