Surgamy is the femslash ship between Surge and Amy from the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom.
Canon[]
In IDW Issue #46, Surge is responsible for the forest fire that started during Amy and her group’s camping trip. It seems at first that Belle accidentally started the fire, though Amy and the group are told by a kid that he saw someone with electricity start the fire. In Imposter Syndrome Issue #1, it’s elaborated that Dr. Starline had Surge started the forest fire to kill Sonic’s friends and lower his morale.
In Issue #67, Surge makes a deal with Clutch the Opossum to infiltrate the Restoration in exchange for learning about her past. Surge directly approaches Amy, telling her she wants to turn her life around. She, Amy, and Kit eat lunch together, which surprises Sonic once he sees them. Sonic and Amy agree to give Surge a tour and keep an eye on her, still distrustful. In a warehouse, Surge also meets Silver and Blaze, whom she learns are not part of the Restoration but help out. Amy takes this opportunity to say that Surge can leave the Restoration at any point if she wishes to. Surge questions if Amy is trying to get rid of her already, to which Amy replies that she just wants Surge to know she has a choice. Surge appears slightly surprised by her genuineness.
After showing Surge the workshop, Sonic decides that Surge should meet Whisper and the New Diamond Cutters, something Amy is initially hesitant about. Sonic reintroduces Surge to them, advocating for her to join the Diamond Cutters. Amy emphasizes that she can only if she wants to. Once the tour is over, the three return to the mall and Duo takes Surge to her room. Amy asks Sonic if he's sure about this. She doesn't argue when Sonic replies that Surge deserves a chance to make a better life for herself.
Fanon[]
Surgamy is a rarepair within the fandom, as Surge herself is only prominent in the IDW comics fanbase. Other ships involving Amy, such as Sonamy or Blazamy are more popular. Sonurge has also become Surgamy's main rival ship. Most non-shippers view both ships as equally illogical. Though Surgamy shippers usually view Surgamy to be superior, because Surge has established that there is no freedom for her as long as Sonic is alive.
Interest in Surgamy started because of their personalities and potential rivalry with each other. Both girls have spunky, determined, and assertive personalities. However, they’re also quite different in the sense that Surge is cocky and selfish, while Amy is empathetic and caring. Some fans portray a personal rivalry between them, as Surge’s want to end Sonic and his allies is opposed by Amy’s devotion for Sonic.
Fans have pointed out how the ship also somewhat mirrors Sonamy, as Surge wants to become Sonic’s replacement after defeating him. This has led to some jokes of Amy hugging Surge from behind, referencing a recurring joke within the franchise of Amy mistaking Sonic’s rivals for Sonic. Many portray their dynamic as one-sided with Surge having a crush on Amy, believing herself to be more deserving of Amy’s affections than Sonic. This also adds to the Sonamy comparisons, as Amy has an overbearing crush on Sonic, who pushes her away, but then her role changes into the uninterested one when pursued by Surge. Some portray Surge not dealing with these unfamiliar romantic feelings well, such as excessive flirting or constantly striving for Amy’s attention by picking fights. Another common portrayal is the classic "I can fix her" mentality, where though treating her with compassion, Amy is able to make Surge a better person. Alternatively, a popular comedic interpretation of the ship is Surge getting with Amy just to spite Sonic. This type of joke was especially popular when the Issue 67 preview first released.

Trivia[]
- According to IDW artist Mauro Fonseca, Surge’s up-do is inspired by Amy in the Sonic the Hedgehog manga.[1]
- On Twitter, someone asked Ian Flynn if Amy was going to meet Surge in a similar manner to how she met Shadow and Silver (hugging from behind).[2] Ian Flynn simply replied with a "#KnowingSmile".[3]
- Nine months later, when the first preview page for Issue #67 was released, Ian Flynn acknowledged the Tweet.[4]
- When asked if he anticipated shippers' reactions to first seeing Amy and Surge interact, Ian Flynn replied, "I just kinda assume if two characters talk to each other, another ship sets sail. The Unintentional Flotilla is a mighty force indeed."[5]
