TetoMiku is the non-binary ship between Kasane Teto and Hatsune Miku from the Vocaloid and Utau fandom.
Canon[]
Both Teto and Miku are voice synthesizer characters made to sing. However, Miku is a Vocaloid developed by Crypton Future Media, Inc. while Teto is an Utau that later received an official Synthesizer V voicebank. Teto's character was an April Fool's joke that tried to trick people into thinking that it was going to be a new Vocaloid from Crypton Future Media. Teto has had a high impact on both the Vocaloid and Utau internet communities, to the point that she has come to appear in semi-official Vocaloid media such as Project DIVA, coinciding with Miku. Despite all, Teto and Miku characters don't have any official relationship. Their relationship can variate depending on the song that they sing together.
Songs[]
The song “Triple Baka” features the two singing with Akita Neru appearing in the background. The song in general talks about being "stupid" for trying to be creative and forgetting about your tasks. In a scene Miku said that when she has much homework and is stressed, she heard a voice saying "Man, you're dumb", words that come from Teto. During the music video, the two are seen flying together, as well as Teto singing and annoying Miku.
The song "The Lying Diva" by JJ Is a dramatized retelling of Teto's history. It is mainly sung by Miku, but Teto also gets her own verse. After Teto's verse, Miku appears and tells Teto that she is not completely forgotten, and that she could sing. In some lines Miku even refers to Teto as "A cute and tsundere doll," or describes her with words like "Sweetly blooms with brilliant/maddening colors."
The song “Neverlander” by Anh Duy talks about Teto and Miku feeling nostalgic, talking about how things were much easier in the past. The two reminisce on moments from their childhood, laughing together, crying because they didn't wanted to grow up and even making a Pinky Promise that they would never, dancing, catching fireflies during midnight, etc. They also remember a moment where Miku was heading to her new school with a van, while Teto was in her room, and the two looked at each other and laughed
The song "The Reason Is" by Daibakuhashin features Teto and Miku along with Zundamon. They don't sing until the second verse however. Miku first sings part of the verse and Teto follows up afterwards. For the second half of the verse they each share a line. Then they sing "Destruction and creation VOCALOID STAR." Destruction and creation might be a reference to Adrien and Marinette, a couple from Miraculous Ladybug. In the second chorus, the two are seen holding hands.
The song “Mesmerizer” by 32ki is currently the most popular duet between Miku and Teto. The theme of the song is vague, but it is implied that the theme is related to hypnosis. It is also shown that they ask for help multiple times in the story, such as Teto blinking “SOS” (...--- ...) in morse code. During “QUIZ TIME!”, the first letters of the four words given spell “help”, and the fourth letter in each word spells “SOS”. Additionally, Teto makes the international sign for “help” in sign language as well as other gestures throughout the song. At some point in the song, Miku is hypnotized while Teto attempts to resist, looking at Miku with a frightened expression. At the end of the music video, Teto seems to be hypnotized like Miku.
Fanon[]
TetoMiku is a smaller ship within both Vocaloid and Utau fandoms, mostly due to Teto not being a Vocaloid and Miku having many more popular ships with other Vocaloid characters. However, there are many people who like to ship them, or at least like them together. Some people like to headcanon Teto and Miku being best friends, or as good friends. Due the "rivalry" between Vocaloid and Utau, there are some people that have depicted them as (friendly) rivals. Triple Baka in particular has inspired some people to feature them alongside Akita Neru.
After the announcement of Teto's Synthesizer V voicebank, some people have started to represent Miku being jealous of Teto, for how Teto's new voice sounds much more natural compared to Miku's NT voicebank. However, some people have also drawn Miku being proud of Teto for going from being a joke to something big.
As of April 2025, on ArchiveOfOurOwn the Hatsune Miku/Kasane Teto relationship tag has 70+ works[1]. It is the most written ship for Teto[2] and the 8th most written ship for Miku[3]. On Fanfiction.net, there are only 3 TetoMiku fanfics that have remained posted. [4] On pixiv there are around 310 uploads on the NegiDrill tag, with 281 of these uploads being "illustration" works, 12 being "manga" works and 17 being "novel" works.[5]
Since the year 2019[6], some fans of the pairing on Twitter have taken the day of June 16th to celebrate as "NegiDrill Day" (ネギドリルの日, Negidoriru no hi [7]), this is due to the fact that the date of June 16th is perfectly inbetween Hatsune Miku's anniversary/birthday (with 76 days before August 31) and Kasane Teto's birthday/anniversary (with 76 days after April 1st), since both dates are 152 days apart from each other. To celebrate they will upload fanart of usually both of the characters of Miku and Teto hanging out together in some way. For this event, some of the most commonly used hashtags are 6月16日はネギドリルの日 hashtag on Twitter (6 Tsuki 16-nichi wa negidoriru no hi[7]) which roughly translates to “the 16th of June is NegiDrill Day”, as well as the “ネギドリルの日” hashtag on Twitter (Negidoriru no hi [7]) which roughly translates to “NegiDrill Day”, or just simply as ネギドリル posts on Twitter.
