The Salesman & lighter gun

The moment the Salesman realizes it's just a lighter gun

In 2020, the Salesman began to recruit players. After 455 players were recruited for the 33rd Squid Game, the Salesman approached who would ultimately be the last player, Seong Gi-hun, on the subway. The Salesman wanted to talk to him, which made Gi-hun felt uncomfortable and annoyed with this, so he used a lighter gun to scare him away. Thinking it was a real gun, the Salesman panicked and raised his hands. But when Gi-hun ignited the lighter, the Salesman realized that and showed disappointed, adjusted his posture seriously, and resumed his work to offered Gi-hun a chance to participate in the 33rd Squid Game.

Season 2[]

In 2024, while recruiting players, the Salesman spends a good chunk of his time baiting vagrants with lottery tickets and bread. Noticing that someone was following him, he subdued and knocked both men out when they try attack him directly. Later, he kidnapped them to his place and forced them to play Rock Paper Scissors Minus One, as well as Russian Roulette.

The Salesman

The Salesman explains the rules of Rock Paper Scissors Minus One to Mr. Kim and Woo-seok

The Salesman loads a single bullet to the revolver and explains that every round the chamber is rotated and aimed towards the loser where the chance of survival or death remains unknown. After each of their constant survival. he gets bored and loads 5 bullets in total and leaving one blank, increasing the stakes. During the next round, when Woo-seok chooses two rocks by mistake, Mr. Kim hesitates to choose which of his hands to pull back, essentially saving Woo-seok's life. Because of Mr. Kim's refusal to play, The Salesman disqualifies him and shoots him. After this, The Salesman "talks" with the winner, presumably wanting to know who sent them.

The Salesman later confronts Gi-hun at his hotel, and the two argue over the philosophy of the games. The Salesman was annoyed when Gi-hun called him a "dog" and underling who manipulates desperate individuals to achieve his own malicious gains. Then, the Salesman explains his needs of sacrifices to achieve his place and couldn't understand how Gi-hun made it out alive. Gi-hun continued to insult him once again, causing The Salesman pointed a gun at Gi-hun's head but then realizing that Gi-hun is very special. The Salesman proposes a game of Russian roulette with him, with a rule that the chamber is not rotated each round, meaning the chances of survival will gradually decrease with each turn. He then places the revolver on the table, spins it, and it points to Gi-hun.

The Salesman put gun in mouth

The Salesman smiles toward Gi-hun after surviving for the fourth shot

The Salesman gave a satisfied smile after surviving for the second shot, then sadistically toying with the gun by smiling unsettlingly and slowly placing it in his mouth, smirked triumphantly toward Gi-hun when surviving once again. Before the fifth shot, which leaves only a 50% chance of survival, he taunts Gi-hun, baiting him to turn the gun on him instead. He claims that doing so would prove Gi-hun is just "trash" who doesn’t trust fate and only survived by luck. Gi-hun ignores the provocation and pulls the trigger on himself, The Salesman shocking when he survives. Gi-hun then turns The Salesman’s words back at him, challenging him to cheat and pull the trigger on him instead, saying it would only prove he is nothing more than a lapdog for those behind the Squid Games. Not wanting to admit that Gi-hun's taunts are right, The Salesman abides by the rules, smiling before fires the gun on himself and dies instantly.

Fanon[]

Following the release of Season 2, one of the most impressive scenes in episode 1, "Bread and Lottery" where The Salesman is pressing a gun to his mouth, his gaze laced with provocation and defiance in front of Gi-hun. This striking moment creates a more intense and thrilling vibe for fans, inspiring various fanart interpretations. Along with sparking a lot of gun kink stuff for the character and his other ships.

Additionally, some user edits on Tiktok like this one blur out the gun (simply as a way to censor violent imagery) when he puts it in his mouth. However, this only makes the scene look more suspicious. Sometimes, it even leads some people to joke about how much he enjoys taking risks and playing with the gun.

Trivia[]

  • Hwang Dong-hyuk (creator of Squid Game) mentioned Gong Yoo (the Salesman's actor) regarding the scene where he puts the gun in his mouth, saying that it was actually Gong Yoo's ad-lib.[1]
  • At Paris Fashion Week, Gong Yoo made a finger gun gesture and held it to his head while giggling, recreating Russian Roulette scene in Squid Game Season 2, attracting attention.[2]
