Anne Rice and Fan Fiction[]
Anne Rice was notoriously against fanfiction, or "specs" as it was once known, and felt "possessive" of her characters. The concept of fans writing about them "upseted her terribly."[1] So much so, in 2000, fans received cease and desist letters to remove their fanfiction online, dubbing it the "Spec Writer Massacre." In 2001, Fanfiction.net was forced to remove all works related to the Vampire Chronicles and it's tag. An addition was then included in the sites guidelines banning works related to Anne Rice.[2] In response, fans began posting their works on private, password protected websites, Livejournal and message boards, such as, The Forbidden Archive.
However, later in life Rice became more tolerant of fan works and though she maintained her belief that writers should create original ideas, she understood fanfiction could be a useful transitional "phase" for writers.[3]
