There lived in the land of Oz two queerly made men who were the best of friends. They were so much happier when together that they were seldom apart.
—L. Frank Baum, Little Wizard Stories of Oz.

Tincrow is the slash ship between the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow from the The Wizard of Oz fandom.

Canon[]

The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were both "born" in the Munchkin Country, south of Emerald City.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz[]

Accompanying Dorothy Gale on her journey to the Emerald City, she and the Scarecrow took shelter in a wooden hut on the side of the road they thought was abandoned. Soon however, they discovered the owner of the hut standing outside, rusting for his skin is made of tin. They find a full oil can nearby and help the man move his joints again, he is grateful for their help and introduces himself as the Tin Woodman, who watches over these woods. When they tell him that they were on their way to the Oz, the Wizard living in Emerald City to find a way home for Dorothy and receive a brain for the Scarecrow, they ask him if there's something that he lacks. The Tin Woodman realizes that he longs for a heart, having lost his own, missing the sensation of feeling love and emotions. The two travelers are happy to let him join on their journey, promising him that maybe the Wizard could give him his heart back.

On their way, the Scarecrow gets curious and asks him why he's made of tin, wanting a friend in another being that was man-made like him. However, the Tin Woodman tells him his life story, he was born an ordinary Ozian named Nick Chopper, who worked in the woods they found him as a woodcutter. He had caught the attention of a lovely maiden (later named Nimmie Ammee), but her mother did not like him, so she urged one of the Wicked Witches to curse Chopper's axe to chop off one bit of his body off everytime he tried to use it. Luckily for him, he knew a gifted tin craftsman, who replaced his missing limbs with tin protheses. However, when Chopper cut one tree after another down and replaced every part of him with tin, the Tin Woodman was all that remained eventually.

Being joined by a cowardly lion Dorothy managed to tame and being stalked by actual predators known as Kalidahs, the group escapes them through the Scarecrow getting the idea to chop down a hollow tree to bridge the chasm and the Tin Woodman having the axe to chop it down. When the group ventures through poison poppies, intended to kill those who inhale their sweet odor by having them sleep forever, the two men are the only ones immune, having none of the internal organs to inhale smells and manage to rescue Dorothy, Toto and (with the help of the kingdom of fieldmice) the Cowardly Lion. However, when they arrive at the Emerald City, the Wizard refuses to give them gifts if they don't kill the Wicked Witch of the West for him first. So the group eventually makes their way to the Witch's castle in Winkie Country, but they were discovered by the old hag beforehand with her telescope eye. While Dorothy, Toto and Lion were asleep, the Witch was sending a forty wolves and forty crows after them. Neither Scarecrow nor Tin Woodman needed to sleep, so they managed to slay all the Witch's beasts and protect their companions. When other attempts at their lives failed, the Wicked Witch resorted to using her last wish of her Golden Cap, summoning the Winged Monkeys to kidnap Dorothy, her dog and the lion, but letting the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman be torn apart and dropped into the water respectively.

As prisoners and servants of the Witch, Dorothy eventually managed to defeat her by throwing water at her when she took a step too far by stealing one of her Silver Shoes, melting the evil woman for her blood had dried long ago and her skin was brittle. After freeing the lion, Dorothy took the Witch's golden cap and immediately tried to look for her fallen companions. The Winkies are grateful for the heroes freeing them of their tyrannical ruler and help them recover the Scarecrow's pieces, drying his straw and sowing his sacks back together and oiling the Tin Woodman to be as good as new. The Winkies take a shine to the Tin Woodman and offer him to be their new ruler.

Returning to the Emerald City with Dorothy summoning the Winged Monkeys to carry them, they discover that the Wizard is a "humbug" with no magical powers. However, they insist on getting their gifts after slaying the Witch, so the Wizard gives Dorothy's three companions placebos, and offers to take Dorothy home with the balloon he came to Oz with. However, the Wizard makes this journey alone due to a mishap, but the companions receive aid by seeking out Glinda, the Good Witch of the North in Quadling Country. Much like the Tin Woodman, however, the citizens of Emerald City take a liking to the Scarecrow and offer to have him be ruler of the Emerald City during the Wizard's absence.

After another long journey to Quadling Country, which also involved the Cowardly Lion becoming King of Beasts, Dorothy uses another request from the golden cap to just carry them to Glinda. There, the friends bade farewell to the little girl and afterwards turn to their respective kingdoms to rule.

The Marvelous Land of Oz[]

During the gap between the first book and the second, the deeds of the four companions had spread throughout the country, to the point where even the orphan boy Tip had heard of them and telling his "son" Jack Pumpkinhead about them. Fleeing his home of Gillikin Country, Tip tries to reach Emerald City in hopes of escaping Mombi, a literal witch of a foster mother who was planning to turn him to stone.

When reaching Emerald City however, King Scarecrow is in distress, for the city had been surrounded by the "Army of Revolt", an army led by General Jinjur who wanted to overthrow the men of Emerald City to give Oz a queen ruler and take all the precious gemstones of the city for her own use. When Tip reaches the Scarecrow, he tells him that Jinjur is not to be reasoned with, telling him her plans of making furniture out of his material. King Scarecrow realizes how dire the situation is and decides to reach the Tin Woodman in Winkie Country, considering him one of his closest friends. Managing to escape the army with Tip's Saw-Horse he had brought to life with the same powder Mombi used on Jack Pumpkinhead, the group finds itself in Winkie Country and soon reaches the Tin Woodman. The two friends enjoy the thought of going on adventures again and the Woodman accompanies the group back to Emerald City. However, they realize that the city was completely conquered in their absence, for two soldiers working in the city had no actual combat expertise and where quickly overwhelmed by Jinjur and her army stabbing them with sewing needles.

When they reach Jinjur, she had already teamed up with the evil Mombi and intends to not only kill all of Tip's friends in numerous gruesome and creative ways, but also return Tip to Mombi's care. The Scarecrow however had enough foresight to store a mass of fieldmice in his shirt, letting them free in the halls of Emerald Castle and having Jinjur and her soldiers running in a panic. Having ample time to plan what to do next, the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman remember that Glinda the Good is one of their strongest allies and work together with Tip's other companions to make a flying machine they call the "Gump" to fly to Quadling Country. Upon reaching Glinda however, she refuses to put Scarecrow back on the throne, but also agrees that Jinjur does not deserve to be queen. She tells them that the rightful ruler of Oz is the daughter of the King of Oz, who had been replaced by the Wizard, but the princess was never found.

When Glinda's army conquers Emerald City, arresting Jinjur and stripping Mombi of her magic powers, Mombi reveals that she was the one who took Princess Ozma. Tip realizes that he was Ozma all along and after some hesitation was restored to her true form and status. The Scarecrow willingly steps aside for Ozma, with the princess building a future for her trusted companions.

Ozma of Oz[]

Upon Dorothy's return, the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman had become respected members of Ozma's entourage, accompanying the princess on her journey to the Land of Ev to also restore that country's rightful rulers. Finding out that the wicked Nome King had bought the Queen of Ev and her ten children as slaves, then turned them into precious ornaments to decorate his underground castle with, the group takes a stand against the Nome King for the royal family to be freed.

The Nome King decides to make it a game, every member of Ozma's entourage gets eleven guesses to touch an ornament, say the word "Ev" and see if it used to be one of the royal family to be brought back with them. Should they fail to do so eleven times, they shall be turned into an ornament as well and the next guesser gets one extra guess to rescue their companion as well. The Tin Woodman also being turned into an ornament caused great distress for the Scarecrow. Dorothy, with pure luck managed to disenchant Prince Evring after touching a picture of a purple kitten, so she is spared being turned into another ornament. But Dorothy is distraught having lost almost everyone in Oz she ever cared about, with Scarecrow soon joining them as he also failed all of his guesses.

But Billina the hen insists on guessing as well, having overheard the Nome King talk about the color-coding of the ornaments. Strategically picking all the purple ornaments for the royal family of Ev, all the green ornaments for Ozma and her entourage and the golden ones for the Scarecrow and Tik-tok the robot, she failed to find the ornament for the Tin Woodman and eventually gave up. Angry at the Nome King, the Scarecrow pelted his eyes with Billina's eggs, knowing they are poisonous to Nomes, giving Dorothy time to steal his magic belt and prevent further transformations. Though the royal family of Ev was finally rescued and returned to power, Dorothy, Ozma and all their friends were inconsolable for they deemed the Tin Woodman to be gone forever. The Scarecrow especially was mourning his dear friend while they journeyed back to the kingdom. But then Dorothy heard Prince Evring use a tin whistle painted to resemble a green pig, used the word "Ev" while touching it and the Tin Woodman was restored to his proper form, lifting everyone's mood (except Evring, who wanted his whistle back).

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz[]

The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman attend the celebrations for Dorothy and the Wizard's return to the Emerald City after braving various lands underground. They reveal to Dorothy that whenever the Scarecrow isn't residing in Emerald City, he now permanently resides with the Tin Woodman.

Little Wizard Stories of Oz: The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman[]

It is a tale of the adventures of the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman when they go boating in the Scarecrow's corncob-shaped boat. When the boat hits a rock, the Tin Woodman plunges to the bottom of a stream. The Scarecrow tries to fish him out, with the advice of a flock of crows; but the crows are malicious pranksters, and the two friends end up suspended in a tree.

Fortunately, the Wizard of Oz happens to pass by, riding the Sawhorse; he rescues the two, and oils up the Tin Man's joints so that he doesn't succumb to rust.

Quotes[]

“I shall return with my friend the Tin Woodman... we have decided never to be parted in the future.”
— Scarecrow, The Marvelous Land of Oz.

Fanon[]

Tincrow is one of the most popular ships in the literature side of the Oz fandom, the most popular slash ship and the most popular ship for both characters. For a series that is already popular with the LGBTQ community, many have noticed how tenderly Baum wrote their friendship and it doesn't take much rewriting to imagine them being in a romantic relationship.

Many fans of Tincrow often ship Dorzma side-by-side, as that is a popular ship in its own right and ties up most main characters. The main rival ship for the pairing is Patchcrow.

  • Dick Martin drew upon the idea of the Scarecrow and Tin Man from the the Little Wizard Stories of Oz story as boaters for his 1986 novel The Ozmapolitan of Oz.[1]
  • The US rock band, "Scarecrow & Tinmen" did state in an article that the band name was intentionally linked to The Wizard Of Oz characters.[2]
    • Main songwriter, Chris Padgett for the band "Scarecrow and Tinmen", explains more in detail why they chose the TWOOZ characters, Scarecrow and Tin Woodmen as the band's name, "In The Wizard Of Oz the Tinman needed a heart and the Scarecrow needed a brain and we're told in Hebrews 8 that as Christians we have a new heart and mind." Simple really! The album is called, 'No Place Like Home'. "It really is resting in the reality that Christ is our home, he is the reality for our existence."[3]

Varations[]

Pins'n'Needles refers to the ship between the two and Scraps the Patchwork Girl
Fiyerboq refers to the ship between Fiyero Tigelaar and Boq from The Wicked Years. The Wicked musical combined Fiyero's character with the Scarecrow's and Boq's with the Tin Woodman's, notably, Boq appeared in the first Oz book and was completely unrelated to Nick Chopper
