Tokyko Mew Mew is a manga series written by Masashi Sogo and animated by Studio Pierrot in 2002.
Plot[]
A teenage girl named Ichigo Momomiya was on a date with Masaya Aoyama, the most popular boy at her school when she and four other girls were bathed in a strange light during an earthquake. The next day, Ichigo started to demonstrate cat-like behavior and was attacked by a monstrous rat. A mysterious man named Ryō Shirogane showed Ichigo that she now had the ability to transform in a mew mew, a magical girl given the abilities of the Iriomote cat. After defeating the creature, Ryō and his colleague Keiichiro told Ichigo that a group of aliens want to claim the earth as their own and exact revenge on humanity for polluting. Ichigo then gathered the other four mew mews who were also infused with the DNA of endangered animals to defend the earth from humanity's biggest threat.

Fanon[]
Tokyo Mew Mew is a popular magical girl anime and manga series but is often overshadowed by others such as Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. Fans enjoy the colorful characters and even make their own fan-made mew mews. The anime was dubbed in the west as Mew Mew Power and heavily criticized it due to its censorship of unnecessary elements and the fact that they changed all of the characters' names. The English dub was originally going to be called Hollywood Mew Mew which had enraged the fans and pressued 4Kids to change the name. The manga sequel Tokyo Mew Mew á la Mode was also not as well received, as with the spinoff Tokyo Mew Mew Olé which featured male mew mews. An anime reboot known as Tokyo Mew Mew New was released nearly 20 years after the original with mixed reception. While it followed the manga more closely, it also made multiple changes that the fans did not like, such as Mint being the first mew mew instead of Ichigo.
Since Tokyo Mew Mew is a shōjo series, shipping is prevalent in this fandom, and romance is a major aspect of the plot. The primary shipping war involves the main protagonist Ichigo Momomiya. It is centered between the canon IchiSaya ship and the semi-canon Kishigo ship. IchiRyo is also popular due to Ryō having a crush on Ichigo but is not as popular as the two main pairings. Due to a phenoma known as Americans Hate Tingle, Masaya Aoyama was not as popular of a character in the west due to being seen as a 'gary-stu', with others adoring Kish and his crush on Ichigo. However, with the reboot series Tokyo Mew Mew New, popularity for IchiSaya increased.
Other characters are also shipped heavily in the fandom. Lettuce Midorikawa has a minor ship battle between the RetaRyo and RetaPai pairings. Lettuce has a one-sided crush on Ryō and had some ship tease moments with Pie as well. Pudding (Bu-Ling) is also paired with Tart in a semi-canon pairing that does not have any rival ships, which may explain why it is the third-most popular ship on AO3 and the most popular ship not involving Ichigo. As all of the main heroes are female, femslash pairings are also popular, with the remaining two mew mews, Mint and Zakuro, commonly being shipped together in the ZakuMint pairing. However, others prefer ships such as ZakuPai and Kishinto to 'pair the spares'. Other femslash pairings such as IchiMint also have a small following.
