Tomoe Family is the family ship between Hotaru Tomoe and Souichi Tomoe from the Sailor Moon fandom.
Canon[]
Manga[]
Souichi is the single father of Hotaru, his wife and Hotaru's mother having died in a fire four years earlier. Souichi is a scientist, and is known for dabbling in unethical experiments. The fire that killed his wife also gravely injured Hotaru. Souichi uses his experience to try and rebuild Hotaru, outfitting her with cybernetic limbs to keep her alive. He also implants a daimon egg inside of his daughter during her surgery, which will one day give birth to Mistress 9.
Souichi throws himself further into his work and dedicates himself wholly to serving Pharaoh 90. He creates daimons that he uses to draw souls for his master. Hotaru is kept in the dark about all of this, but recognizes that her father is cold and sometimes even uncaring. He continues to perform maintenance on Hotaru and her implants during this time.
Souichi is eventually killed by Super Sailor Moon. She feels conflict over doing it, knowing that he is Hotaru's father and not wanting to cause Hotaru more pain. Hotaru, who is trapped inside her own body due to Mistress 9's awakening, feels it when her father dies. She says goodbye, and releases a single tear.
90s Anime[]
Unlike the manga canon, this version of Souichi Tomoe does not consciously choose to serve Pharaoh 90. Instead, his body is possessed by Germatoid, who functions as the leader of the Death Busters. Upon the sailor guardians' successful defeat of Pharaoh 90, Souichi is freed. He helps Hotaru to later free herself from Mistress 9's control.
After Hotaru is reborn as an infant, she is given to Souichi to care for. It is implied that he does not have any memories of the Death Busters or his possession.
Fanon[]
The relationship between Hotaru and her father is viewed differently depending on what fans consider to be "canon". In the 90s anime their relationship is portrayed as tragic, with Souichi showing that he cares deeply for his daughter and helping her and the other guardians to succeed in their mission. The manga (and, by extension, Crystal) version of Souichi is portrayed as an irredeemable monster who is willing to sacrifice his own daughter for power and scientific prestige. There is obviously much more animosity held for this version and their subsequent relationship.
Fans of his pairing generally lean towards the anime interpretation, and like to see Souichi and Hotaru coming back together after everything that tried to drive them apart. They often rely heavily on providing Souichi with a redemption arc of sorts.
There are currently only 3 works for this pairing on AO3.
