TonyJan is the het ship between Tony Stark and Janet Van Dyne from the Marvel fandom.

Canon[]

Tony Stark A.K.A. Iron Man and Janet Van Dyne A.K.A. The Wasp are 2 characters originating from Marvel Comics. Both introduced in the same year, Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39 and Wasp in Tales to Astonish #44, they didn't meet until the first issue of The Avengers, also released in 1963, in which together with Hulk Thor and Ant-Man they founded the Avengers group for the first time.

One common trait Tony and Janet shared through out most of the original Avengers run is that they were both quite flirty all the time, not only with each other but with other members of the team as well. While this was usually done as a way of friendly banter from time to time, over the years Tony and Jan have had a kind of on and off relationship with each other, with something usually out of their control keeping them apart.

In Avengers #224 Tony, as Iron Man, decides he has been ignoring certain feelings towards Janet for a while and tries to persue her romantically, eventually Janet enters a relationship with Tony Stark, unaware that the millionaire is secretly Iron Man, since unlike her Tony was still using a secret identity, for which he was scolded by other members of the team such as Captain America, who didn't approve of Iron Man lying to Wasp like that. When Tony eventually revelaed his secret identity to Janet she was horrified and broke off the relationship, as she didn't want to be dating of Hank's (Her ex-husband) friends. Tony was saddened but he accepted. He would also feel remorse for the way he handled the whole thing and not considering how Jan or Hank could feel at the time.

Over 20 years in publication later however, Janet and Tony started working together again during the 2019 Iron Man series, due to a problem in Jocasta's AI, this eventually led to them rekindling their past relationship and become romantically involved once again. With Wasp joining Iron Man in most of his super hero adventures, helping him solve the eScape crisis, fighting off the Master Controller's criminal revolution, giving him the emotional support that he needed to defeat the Asgardiang Sorcerer Sadurang and also help during the War of the Realms event.

During this time Janet was also abducted by a crazed Ultron, who planned to fuse her body with that of Jocasta (A similar plot to another one of his from the 60's). With the help of Machine Man Tony was able to track Ultron's base down and rescue them both, he however suffered a terrible mutation which fused his armor with his body. Later Wasp had to shrink herself enough to enter Iron Man's bloodstream and save him from a miniature version of Ultron. Iron Man was able to invent a special laser capable of defusing humans from machines and used it to scare Ultron and his army of zombies as well.

This development also lead him to the realization that he himself wasn't human and that he was actually an AI since the real Tony Stark would have been killed during Civil War II. Janet tried to comfort him and assured him that he was as real as he neeeded to be.

At some point later the once again broke off their relationship off-screen, the reason being implied to be Tony's sudden deppresion.

Quotes[]

Janet“Care to dance, Mr. Stark?”
Tony“That's Tony, and I'd love to! I don't get offers from such a delightful creature every day, you know.”
Janet“Listen, Tony if you think flattery will get you anywhere with Jan Van Dyne-- you're absolutely right! So just pour it on![1]
Tony“I really appreciate you dropping by like this.”
Janet“Anything for you Anthony. Except I have to be honest... Wires out of your head? Not your best look.[2]
Janet“Don't worry Stark. I won't sting you.”
Tony“Too late, Van Dyne. I'm already stung.[3]
“Uh... Sweetie? Is this really the best time to be making new toys?”
— Janet[4]
Janet“What do you need?”
Tony“I need four minutes and nineteen seconds.”
Janet“Ah. Give me something challenging next time.[5]
Tony“You smell great...”
Janet“Flattery will get you everywhere.[6]
Janet“Okay, Tony, I know you... And I know you're a long way from fine.”
Tony“Actually, Jan? You don't know me at all. You once said I had a "New lease on life." But I never did. It was all a lie. I'm an echo of the man you once knew. I'm not real. And you... You deserve someone real.”
Janet“Tony Stark. I know what's real and what's not. And I can prove it.[7]

TonyJan is a fairly rarepair in the overall Marvel fandom. This is probably due to the fact that it never really left the comics, with at best some flirty banter in some of the cartoons. The MCU versions of the characters never even meet until Tony was already dead and Janet was an elderly woman.

It's still a liked pairing with a decent number of fans. Some note that despite Tony and Janet having both a story of quick hook ups and flings each, they actually tended to be much more sincere and affectionate with each other whenever they actually were dating together.
