ToonieVilla is the non-binary ship between (Toon) Link and Villager from the Super Smash Bros. fandom.
Canon[]
Link in Animal Crossing[]
Link and other aspects of the The Legend of Zelda series had been referenced throughout the Animal Crossing series in its entirety through special items, but Link specifically only had significant appearances in later games.
From City Folk onward, the Villager can unlock the "Hero's Hat" and "Hero's Tunic" items from the Tom Nook Point System, which are modelled after Link. In addition to the previous two items returning being updated to resemble Skyward Sword instead of Twilight Princess, New Leaf added the "Hero's Pants" and "Hero's Boots" as special prizes won from fortune cookies.
The Welcome amiibo update for New Leaf also added four special amiibo-villagers based on Zelda characters, one of them being "W. Link", who is based on Wolf-Link from Twilight Princess. "W. Link" functions just like any "Smug"-type villager, but he can be summoned to the village's RV site, where the player can buy exclusive Link-cosplay pieces based on Breath of the Wild and the original Link design.
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U[]
In the Villager reveal trailer, regular Link has a couple of cameos before the Villager enters the battle, though this is mostly because the trailer doubles as a reveal trailer for the whole game. An official still sees the Villager tripping while about to drop a potted plant on Link's head.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
In Toon-Link's Classic Mode, "The Teamwork of Courage", the Villager and Isabelle are his second opponents.
In a Spirit Battle for Aryll, a female Villager represents Aryll herself, who fights alongside Toon-Link as a reference to them being siblings. Villager fights alongside Young Link in the Spirit Battle for Tingle, representing Tingle's two brothers from Wind Waker. Young Link and female Villager also represent Donbe and Hikari respectively in their Spirit Battle. Ness fights alongside them as Power Pro-Kun, with female Villager as Aoi Hayakawa and Toon-Link as Mamoru Ikari for their Spirit Battle.
Fanon[]
ToonieVilla might've originated from the official website putting Toon-Link and Villager's character arts right next to oneanother, possibly because Toon-Link was one of the last characters added for Brawl, while Villager was the very first character added for the fourth game. Enough people thought that their similar artstyles and heights made them look cute together, in addition to the Green of Link's tunic contrasting nicely with the red of the default Villager's shirt. Though Toon-Link is also sometimes shipped with a female Villager, most commonly the brunette one with the green dress, the vast majority of ToonieVilla content centers around Toon-Link and the default male Villager.
What helps is that they were the only humanoid children in the fourth game besides Ness and Lucas, with ToonieVilla making for a nice side-ship for the extremely popular Nesscas. The four kids are often depicted as a friend group in fanwork. Though age is vague in Animal Crossing, the players look like children but are implied to be moving out of their parents' home and can have jobs, fans of Smash Bros more commonly interpret the Villagers as children.
Fanon would often have Toon-Link and the Villager as roommates in whatever establishment the fighters spend their freetime in when they are not fighting each other. A significant amount of ToonieVilla content seems to take inspiration from Creek, with the two also only pretending to like each other, before realizing that they actually do have feelings for oneanother.
Since the "Killager" meme was very popular during that time, some pieces of fanwork reference it by having Villager spare Toon-Link.
