Canon[]
In the Megami Ibunroku Persona manga, Naoya and Kazuya share a deep bond from a young age. Their closeness is evident, with the two often inseparable during their childhood. A pivotal event occurs when, at four years old, Kazuya tragically dies in an accident while trying to cheer up Naoya during an illness. This loss profoundly impacts Naoya, leading to feelings of guilt and a complex grieving process, including his mother's difficulty in accepting Kazuya's death.
Naoya's life is profoundly affected by the tragic death of his twin brother, Kazuya, during their childhood. At four years old, Naoya fell ill, and while their mother took Kazuya to a dentist appointment, she promised to buy Kazuya a manga, which Kazuya intended to share with Naoya. On their way back, their mother became engaged in a conversation with an acquaintance, leading Kazuya to impatiently head home alone to give the manga to Naoya. Tragically, Kazuya was struck by a vehicle and died.
Overwhelmed by grief, their mother began to address Naoya as "Kazuya," unable to accept the loss of her elder son. This denial led Naoya to question his own identity, as he grappled with survivor's guilt and a deep-seated belief that he was responsible for Kazuya's death. To comfort his mother, Naoya assumed Kazuya's identity, which further exacerbated his internal conflict and identity crisis.
Afterwards, in the Lost Forest as Naoya is troubled with how vague his memories of that time were, Kazuya reappears to attack him, separating Naoya from his friends. Naoya, unable to call his Persona is quickly overpowered by the overly aggressive Kazuya who attempts to kill him, but was saved by Mai.
After defeating Kandori, Kazuya and Aki show Naoya a memory where their mother mistook him for Kazuya. This causes Naoya to question his identity, as he has repressed memories of the time Kazuya died. Kazuya then separates Naoya from his friends, and as Naoya recalls the past, he realizes he is not Kazuya. Instead, Kazuya is a manifestation of Naoya's guilt and self-hatred. After a brief confrontation, Naoya accepts Kazuya as part of himself, leading to Kazuya’s disappearance and Naoya's healing.[1]
