Toyanene is the het ship between Touya Aoyagi and Nene Kusanagi from the Project SEKAI fandom.

Canon[]

Touya and Nene are second-year students at Kamiyama High School; during their first year, they were classmates at class 1-B. The two share many similarities and interests, and Nene is initially nervous and awkward around Toya while he remains dense. At first, they have a few short area conversations at school that include Nene asking Touya about books and Akito as well as Touya asking Nene on her opinion whether he's bad at sports or not.

In Nene's 1* card's first side story, the two interact one day at school during lunch break when Nene is watching a musical on her phone. She blushes and watches in awe, and Touya then notices her and watches alongside Nene. She notices Touya’s staring and she starts to sweat, and Touya then asks what she’s watching. Nene sweats even more, shocked that Touya had spoken, stammering her answer and fiddling with her fingers. Touya then observes and continues to watch, moving closer. This puts pressure on Nene as she waits for him to leave; she asks Touya if he likes it, and he answers yes while densely continuing to watch.

Nene, annoyed, calls the last straw and writes the name of the musical on a piece of paper and gives it to Touya so he can watch it by himself. Touya is confused and asks if she wants him to recycle the paper, then notices the other inside as Nene explains she gets distracted when someone else is around, telling him to search and watch the video himself. He thanks her then leaves, and meets Akito outside who asks if “that girl” had thrown a piece of trash at him, and Touya corrects him before the story ends.

Their main interactions stem from close game/OFFLINE.

close game/OFFLINE[]

Nene decides to participate in a game tournament to get the winning prize, four tickets to a Game Expo. She teams up with Emu and is surprised to see Touya and Akito teaming up at the game tournament to get the tickets too. The two declare themselves rivals both of them want to win. They later on go against each other in Puyo Puyo, and Nene recognizes Touya's player ID but brushes it off. Touya wins the match against Nene.

Nene realizes she underestimated Touya, and finally realizes that Touya's player ID is the same one that had been ranking first in the games at the arcade. Emu calls Touya and Nene arcade mates since they both go to the arcade often. Touya calls Nene strong despite her losing against him. Nene and Touya agree to have a rematch later on when they have time. Touya and Nene also temporarily team up in another game.

The tournament ends with Nene and Emu's team winning. Nene remembers that Touya and Akito wanted the winning prize too, but Touya says that Nene and Emu should keep the tickets. Touya and Akito also get tickets from the store manager anyway, so Emu and Nene are given game passes and allowed unlimited playing for a year. Nene tells Touya that she'll train hard in Puyo Puyo and won't lose to him next time. Touya responds by saying he had fun playing with Nene and would like to do it again.

Toya saw Nene in the Kamiyama High hallways after school. He says that the books she has about movie writing was uncommon to see checked out. Nene tells him that her class will be making a movie for the art festival, she then says to him if it were possible, she would've liked actual screenplays. Toya says he understands and tell her to wait for a moment. He comes back a few minutes later, apologizing for the wait. He comes back with books that he says should satisfy her requests,. She looks at it and the books were about screenplay, she says she didn't know there was that many of them. Toya says that the screenplays were on a different shelf than the reference books, saying that it might have been difficult to tell. She thanks him for going out of his way, saying she was embarrassed that she wasn't able to find it, even though shes in the library committee. Toya says that since she just joined, she will be able to remember it on due time. She thanks him.

Quotes[]

Touya“You're really good at singing.”
Nene“The same goes for you...”
— Live Interaction
Akito“Well, I get that you want to do that but, aren't you in the same class as Kusanagi? You can tell her thanks whenever.”
Touya“Oh, that's true. I've never really talked to her in our classroom before, so I just assumed that I had to thank her at the venue. I guess this means that we'll be able to talk about games at school sometime.”
Akito“This guy... But, at least you have a gaming friend now.”

Fanon[]

Toyanene is a rarepair that is mainly rivaled by AkiToya and Emunene, being Touya and Nene's most popular ships respectively. Some Toyanene shippers also enjoy and ship Akiemu alongside Toyanene. Despite the ship not being amongst the most popular in the fandom it still has some fans, a decent amount of fan art and (as of currently) 30+ romantic works and 30+ gen works on AO3.

Some people tend to see Toyanene as a platonic friendship rather than a romantic ship, still appreciating the connection they have and their similar interests.
