Tragic Trio is the friendship between Akihiko Sanada, Ken Amada, and Shinjiro Aragaki from the Persona fandom.
Canon[]
Akihiko, Shinjiro, and Ken are seven years apart. They are connected with similar tragic pasts. Akihiko loses his younger sister in a fire at the orphanage where he, Shinjiro, and Miku grew up, Ken loses his mother two years ago because of Shinjiro’s berserk Persona, and Shinjiro is indirectly responsible for taking someone's life. They are members of SEES. Ken only refers to Shinjiro and Akihiko by their last names in Japanese and Reload English versions. Their nicknames refer to Shinjiro and Akihiko, and his surname refers to Ken. In the original English version, Akihiko and Shinjiro refer to Ken by his first name. However, Ken still relates to Akihiko by his surname, except he sometimes calls Akihiko by his first name during exploration in Tartarus, which is not in the main story.
Shinjiro’s death became the reason for Akihiko and Ken to evolve their Personas into their ultimate Personas. It helped Akihiko and Ken move on from their tragic past of losing their loved ones.
In the manga adaptation, Akihiko and Ken are the only ones who witness Shinjiro’s death.

If Shinjiro survives from a fatal shot from Takaya and rendered comatose, Akihiko and Ken will mention him on certain days.

Shinjiro, Akihiko, and Ken are Social Links for Kotone’s route. Akihiko’s Social Link is only available after school, and Ken and Shinjiro’s Social Links are only available in the evening. Akihiko and Ken’s Social Links can be maxed by any time, Shinjiro’s Social is limited and it has to be completed before October 4th or else Shinjiro will be killed in the canon main storyline.
Film[]
The interaction between Akihiko, Shinjiro, and Ken isn’t focused on that much since Shinjiro mainly interacted with Akihiko and Ken separately. Akihiko and Ken don’t interact that much. On October 4th, Akihiko and Ken, along with the other members of SEES, grieve over Shinjiro’s death. In the third movie, Akihiko and Ken visit the back alley of Tatsumi Port Island, where Shinjiro is killed.

In Act 4, it was revealed Akihiko and Ken had been visiting Shinjiro at the hospital during visiting hours.
In Act 5, Akihiko, Ken, and Kotone hear Shinjiro’s voice during the Dark Hour in the final battle on January 31st. In the final scene, Akihiko and Ken reunite with Shinjiro. They are willing to help Shinjiro, who recently awakened from his coma. Akihiko keeps up with Shinjiro’s pace while Ken helps support Shinjiro due to his limp leg. They arrive at the rooftop with the others to reunite with Kotone and Aigis.
Moments[]
- Shinjiro, Akihiko, and Ken are the only male options in PSP New Game Plus that Kotone can choose to spend her last moments with besides Aigis.
Fanon[]
Tragic Trio is one of the few fanshipping in the Persona 3 fanbase. Many fans love to portray Shinjiro and Akihiko as older brother figures to Ken if Shinjiro survived his fatal ordeal against Takaya on October 4th.
