TreyRid is the slash ship between Trey Clover and Riddle Rosehearts from Twisted Wonderland fandom.
Canon[]
Trey and Riddle are childhood friends, before they met Trey and his friend Che'nya would pass by the Rosehearts house and spy Riddle through the window. With the two living in the same neighbourhood of Queendom of Roses. One day when Riddle was left on his own for self studies, Trey and Che'nya decide to invite him to play with them. The flashback from the adaption manga of book one, has Riddle take Trey's hand when he except their offer to play with them. Riddle enjoyed his time playing with Trey and Che'nya, as they taught him things that his mother wouldn't, and would sneak out to spend time with his friends during self studies. One day Riddle tells Trey that he never had a strawberry tart before, with his mother saying that sugar is poison, Trey convinces Riddle to try one at his family's cake shop. The one that Riddle would pass by and spy the tarts in the window, like they were forbidden jewels he could not have. Riddle agrees to have one bit and though he was glad that he did so as he enjoyed eating it with his friends, Riddle lost track of the time. His mother wasn't pleased that Riddle disobeyed him and doesn't approve of his friends, she forbids Riddle from seeing Trey or Che'nya.
Though Trey is upset by this, meeting Riddle's mother has him see what his young friend goes through. Riddle's family abusing him through the rules and choices they alone make for him, from what Riddle ate to the kinds of friends he they think Riddle should should have. Watching those rules build Riddle's character, after Riddle was forbidden to see Trey again he vowed to never break his mother's rules again. This is why Trey tries to be understanding with Riddle and doesn't speak out against the ways he runs the dorm. After Riddle joins Trey at Night Raven college and became Housewarden of Heartslabyul within his second week. With Trey named his Vice-Housewarden, with Riddle having great trust in his childhood friend despite seeing Trey as too soft for his own good, Trey and his friend Cater Diamond try to keep Riddle calm and help the students who are suffering under Riddle's rule. Believing that keeping Riddle happy, calm and not saying anything was for the best.
Until Ace Trappola calls Trey out for cuddling Riddle and allowing him to act out as a tyrant, rather than say something about it. Trey realises that Ace was right after Riddle overblots, and uses his signature spell to keep Riddle from using his as they battle him. In order to save Riddle and gain him back his senses, before the overblot kills him. After Riddle wakes and starts crying, he reveals that he doesn't like their dorm's rules either and longs for the days he would play with Trey and Che'nya. Trey apologies for not saying anything about how he runs the dorm, and for staying silent despite knowing that Riddle was suffering. As Riddle recovers from his overblot, he begins to act less strict on enforcing the rules upon the other students, a change that Trey is pleased with and is happy to see Riddle happy. The two friends also have a laugh of Riddle falling for Trey's oyster sauce joke, as Riddle is the only one who fell for it.
Though Riddle is still strict and detriment to make their dorm great, as well as threatening to off the heads of any student, Trey not being the exception and knows it, Trey remains loyal to him. Still keeping some of his opinions about Riddle to himself, knowing that his friend means well. Riddle knows that Trey has always worried about him, even when Trey is sick or injured he would make Riddle his main concern. With how tight Riddle runs their dorm, Trey sometimes feels that Riddle doesn't his support as Vice-Housewarden and worries that Riddle's Housewarden duties have put pressure on him. Just as Trey always looks for Riddle and his happiness, as Riddle finds joy in eating the sweets Trey makes him, Riddle tries to look out for Trey. One time Riddle made Trey soup when he was feeling ill, and even though it didn't turn out right Trey still eats it. Knowing that Riddle put a lot of work into it, just as Trey works hard to aid and please Riddle in whatever way he can.
Main Story[]
The Rose Red Tyrant
At the beginning of Book 1[1], we are introduced to Riddle and Trey as the strict housewarden and the contrasting pacifist right-hand man who together lead the Heartslabyul dormitory. While Riddle's first appearance shows a firm, marked and rigid personality, Trey's demonstrates the calmer role he occupies as a dormitory co-ruler. Furthermore, Trey explains to an indignant Ace that Riddle is the more serious dorm leader and justifies his wanting to protect tradition. Riddle rules and enforces the Queen of Hearts rules rigorously.
In Riddle and Ace's next confrontation over the latter's disrespectful attitude, it is shown how Trey can calm their leader and the waters once again. Although Riddle stresses that he should be more heavy-handed as vice, he lets it go and leaves. Words against Riddle begin to rise swiftly, given his strict attitude, and Trey is quick to jump to his defence again, saying that he doesn't want to be the bad guy but to help the dorm. Thus, he ends up supporting his juniors in baking a cake that Riddle wants to eat to make amends for the problems they're causing. After all, Trey knows firsthand that Riddle is best approached through his stomach and the sweets he prepares. Once the cake is finished, Trey uses his unique magic to ensure a good taste because his juniors have bought into the fact that the oyster sauce note is real. They stress that it's better than Riddle's, but Trey modestly says it's a mere child's play in comparison. That same night, more students are collared by Riddle, and Trey assures them that he will talk to him. The next day, the birthday party happens. After ensuring everything is on point, there is only one issue: The cake they brought. Trey was unaware of the broken rule. Riddle threatens to cut off everyone's heads if they don't apologize. Although they ask Trey if that's what he wants, he says he can't do anything about it. In the end, Riddle continues the party.
At this one, the juniors meet Che'nya, a student at Royal Sword Academy. He tells them that if they want to know more about Riddle, they should ask Trey because he's known him since they were kids. That's when the crucial information that they are childhood friends is revealed, which infuriates Ace. The junior reproaches his senior as soon as he sees him again. Ace asks if Trey has been this indulgent and bootlicking with him since they were little, to which Trey asks him where he got the information that they are childhood friends. In the end, Ace ends up interrogating him. The conclusion is unequivocal: Trey can't tell Riddle off for what he does. To this, Ace blames Trey again for his childhood friend behaving this way, questioning what kind of shitty friend he is if he'd rather see him watch everyone hate him and isolate him for his attitude towards others, to which Trey keeps quiet. Ace assumes it's because Trey doesn't want his head cut off, too.
Ace and Deuce end up confronting Riddle to take away his position as dorm leader but lose quickly. Amidst all the commotion and hurtful comments from Ace, the students end up egging Riddle on, causing them all to get their heads chopped off. Worried about Riddle's excessive use of dark magic, Trey soon counters it with his own and overwrites it, which is the last straw for Riddle. That even Trey, his right-hand man, also tries to stop his rules. Although he asks him to calm down, Riddle doesn't listen. The last thing he hears before overblotting is Trey screaming his name. While Riddle is in a state of overblot, Trey says he can't lose him because he still has something to tell him. He is immensely worried about him throughout the battle. Of course, he provides support and fights him, but he comes across as distracted. During this one, Riddle again reproaches him if he is going to meddle again. Once he is defeated, it is revealed how Trey and Riddle met. When he was little, he and Riddle's mother would walk past a bakery, and he would stare at one full of strawberries. It was she who had forbidden him from consuming sugar, among many other things. It turns out that that bakery belonged to Trey's family and he, who was curious about the boy who seemed to be so interested in his sweets. So, together with Che'nya, they ended up arriving at his house. Using sweets and an adorable hedgehog as an incentive, Riddle ended up taking little Trey's hand and sneaking out of his mother's house during the only free hour a day he had in his strict schedule. With Trey, they would play together, hang out, and have fun. It was a happy time for both of them, and the first contact with children his age that Riddle had. However, it didn't last forever. Although it was only a few months, it scarred both boys in both meaning and consequence. Riddle's mother found him outside the house tasting the sweets she had so forbidden him and gave him a 5-hour lesson to Trey's family, as well as a ban on ever seeing Che'nya and Trey again forever. Riddle returned to his confinement, and Trey never got to forget him. From then on, Riddle's life became suffocating lonely.
When he awakens from his overblot, Trey is holding his hand once again as he calls his name. Here, Riddle reveals in tears all his indulgences and real thoughts: that he wants to eat Trey's sweets and have fun with him and the rest instead of limiting himself to the rules. Even that he doesn't care about some of them. Trey says he's sorry too because he knows what he was doing was wrong, but he overlooked it. For this, Riddle apologizes to his students. Ace doesn't forgive him and asks him to repeat the unbirthday party and make a new cake without Trey's help. Riddle accepts, and subsequently, Trey accompanies him to the infirmary. In the manga, that moment is depicted as Trey and Riddle in the distance going towards a heart-shaped arch.
Thus, they have that unbirthday party again. While ensuring everything is in order, Riddle notices that there are unpainted white roses and does it himself instead of reproaching his students. Proud of him and seeing his enjoyment, Trey reflects on Riddle's change as he admires him. Eventually, at that same celebration, Riddle brings out the cake he has prepared, and they try it, but it doesn't taste good. It turns out that Riddle has been the victim of the earlier oyster sauce prank that Trey played on his juniors. Instead of getting angry, the two laugh together at the absurdity of the whole thing. The party continues, and everyone is happy. In the manga, the scene ends with Trey looking fondly at Riddle, reflecting on how much he has changed.
The Usurper from the Wilds
In book 2[2], Treyrid starts with a Riddle full of thirst for revenge. Someone consciously tried to sabotage Riddle to hurt him badly before the next Magicshift tournament. Trey realized it and, protecting him, ended up wounded instead. Riddle will not rest until he finds the culprit. Trey shows a more sadistic side and also claims revenge against them. Still, they do not let go of their mutual concern. Riddle shows a sorry attitude when he goes to visit Trey, offering him something to eat or drink. Despite Trey telling him that everything is in order, Riddle insists that he is to blame for him being this way. In other interactions, Riddle mentions that he has relaxed about the rules. Trey stresses that he has, but even so, his seriousness is one of his strengths.
Among other miscellaneous events, Riddle attempts to cut off Leona's head. Despite Lilia's suggestion to run away to Cater if he is scared, Cater says that if he leaves Riddle there alone, Trey will kick his ass. After all the incidents and events, Trey suggests letting Savanaclaw participate despite everything that has happened. They see it as an opportunity for revenge, but Riddle ends up agreeing to let him be alone because Trey insisted on it.
Schemer of the Scalding Sands
In book 4[3], we can find them just before the winter holiday break. Although Cater suggests staying at Trey's house, Trey turns him down, saying there is too much work. However, seeing Riddle glum about going home to his mother, the opposite happens. Trey is the one who tells Riddle that, while he is not allowed to come over to his house or give him sweets, he still can drop by his' whenever he wants. Although Riddle is grateful, he mentions that he wants to talk to his mother, not knowing if she will listen. Trey can only offer him words of support. Soon after, Floyd tries to get under Riddle's skin, and Trey reassures him when he gets angry. After all, Trey knows Floyd is doing it on purpose. Soon after, they say goodbye. Riddle enters the mirror, and Trey leaves after him.
A Beautiful Tyrant
In book 5[4], they both manage the VDC festival together. Lilia asks Cater at Vil's auditions if Trey hasn't come with him, and he answers he's busy helping Riddle. At one point, at Ramshackle, Vil takes it upon himself to confiscate Trey's sweets from his juniors and squeals about how he won't stop “spoiling people rotten”. Implying the indulgence he often has with Riddle. When the day of the festival arrives, Trey and Riddle attend together. That's when it's revealed that, in reality, Trey was not a member of the organizing committee, and was helping Riddle because he wanted to. Before the interaction is over, they discuss which post to go to next and offer the prefect to go with them. There, they both go around explaining to him what each one consists of. They end up at the science club booth, Trey's club, in the botanical garden. There, Trey apologizes to one of its members for not being able to help them too much. That is, he has given priority to patrolling with Riddle and helping him rather than supporting his club. After that, they visit other stalls from other clubs together with the prefect and Grim, including Riddle's. While walking down the main street, they encounter a fight between RSA and NRC students. After resolving the conflict, they meet Che'nya and chat with him for a while until they have to leave again. Before finishing with the prefect, they find Lilia and Cater having a conversation about collars around some students' necks. Cater suggests that they have been busy, to which Trey replies that they have with troublemakers. Riddle and Trey mention that they have tickets to see their juniors and will have their heads cut off if they make fools of themselves. After splitting up, Trey and Riddle continue on their roll, patrolling the festival together.
The Watchman of the Underworld
Book 6 has Trey receive news that Riddle has been kidnapped while he was baking cookies in the dorm. He says it all happened so fast that he still can't process it. Worrying about his friend, but knew that Riddle would want him to remain at the school and what over their dorm on his behalf.
At S.T.Y.X. headquarters, Idia, Ortho and their employees put the group they through different tests. In the second, Vil, Riddle and Azul enter a simulator that takes the form of the school cafeteria, where they meet their respective vice leaders. “Trey” tells Riddle that the leaders' meeting is about to begin. The trio looks perplexed, with Trey asking if they have anything on their faces. Riddle and the others decide to play along, but this causes them to be attacked. Riddle asks Trey what it all means. Fake Rook replies, on behalf of the three, that they are going to challenge them for the leadership position and Jade adds that they have already done the relevant paperwork with the headmaster. And while Rook says “I can't allow someone who acted in such an ugly way to take the evil queen's throne,” it's quite possible that the fake Jade and Trey wanted to say the same thing to their respective leaders. Riddle, Vil, and Azul confront them, managing to defeat them. As they recover, Idia and Ortho analyse the trio's blot accumulation starting with Riddle, with the latter remarking that “his mental state is heavily impacted by external factors,” adding that in the second test, where he faced the fake Trey, he was under a lot of stress and that had a clear influence on his blot levels. After Riddle and the others survive Idia's overblot, his unique magic and escape the S.T.Y.X. headquarters, a very concerned Trey calls his name loudly, saying he's glad to see he's okay, before being surprised to see his white-coloured hair. Riddle apologizes to him and Cater for worrying them, and promises to explain after he goes to the infirmary. Trey replies that he looks pretty banged up and offers to go with him there as soon as possible.
The Lord of Malevolence
In book 7 Trey and Riddle are guests at Lilia's farewell party, but when Malleus overblots in an attempt in keep Lilia from leaving and giving everyone the chance to be the heroes of their stories, Trey, Riddle and the rest of Night Raven are put into a deep sleep. While being trapped in the dreams of how they would like their lives to be and what would happen if they had taken a different round in the past choices they made. When Yuu, Grim, Silver, Sebek, the Shroud brothers and Leona visit the dreams of the Heartslabyul squad, in order to wake them up like they did with the other dorms, they come across different versions of Trey and Riddle, that are their dream counterparts from the dreams they visit, before finding the real Trey and Riddle.
In Cater's dream, where Cater is the dorm leader, Trey and Riddle appear at his side, both shaped by the “darkness” that prevents the dreamer from waking up. The two have slightly different personalities, which are more in line with Cater's preferences (Riddle is even a DJ and Trey bakes spicy things for him), but they often appear together even if Trey retains his position as vice leader and Riddle is a normal student.
In Ace's dream, the darkness again takes the form of Trey and Riddle (and the rest of Heartslabyul), with both being, again, the ones trying to convince the dreamer to stay asleep. In this case, seeing that Cater is succeeding in waking Ace, they both arrive to “help” Ace, showing concern for him. The fake Riddle confronts the real Cater asking him how dare he harm a member of his dorm and threatens to cut off his head. Cater, with a smile, replies “Yes, yes, Riddle-kun and Trey-kun will always protect the dorm students.” The fake Trey and Riddle lament about how their vacation was interrupted and begin to “seduce” Ace into not waking up, filling him with promises and sweet words. Eventually, the fake Heartslabyul group reveals their identities only to be defeated.
In Trey's dream, this one takes place in a Heartslabyul where Riddle is not the dorm leader, but instead it's Che'nya, implying that Trey wishes Riddle not to deal with the heavy burden that led him to overblot and delegates the task to another friend whom he trusts very much and who also loves Riddle. Trey, in his dream, spends his time baking desserts and food in general, in a kitchen that is much larger than the one in the actual dorm. Cater pretends to be the one in his dream and brings Leona and Idia along to get information out of him upon seeing that Che'nya wears the dorm leader crown. Che'nya reveals that Riddle is just another card soldier, but that he is very strong and knows a lot about magic. Leona asks that, if so, why isn't he a dorm leader and Trey proceeds to tell how Riddle tried to challenge Che'nya to a duel, losing to his unique magic (and causing Che'nya to prank him by pulling down his pants in public). Che'nya bids farewell to the rest, and the trio is left alone with Trey, who proceeds to feed them a good portion of what he has been cooking. At a certain point, and after a brief chat, Trey goes off to continue preparing more food, leaving the trio chatting amongst themselves. At one point, Cater observes how relaxed Trey looks baking sweets non-stop, complimenting the group of Silver, Sebek, Idia, Ortho, Yuu and Grim for having the courage to wake people up, while he finds himself unable to do so and adding that “If it wasn't for the trouble he had with Riddle-kun's family, I wonder if Trey-kun would have become as enthusiastic a baker as he is now?” Idia asks curiously about Riddle's family, but Cater is interrupted by the arrival of Trey, who brings with him a new dessert. Idia tries to pry information out of him, asking if he has always liked making sweets, which leads to a conversation about how Trey became as passionate about baking as he is now. Trey remarks that there is nothing better than the satisfaction you get from tasting a dessert and having it taste just as you imagined it would, and also the fact that the result not only satisfies him but others. Trey comments on how happy he is with the huge kitchen he has and how happy he is baking for the other students in the dorm, saying that the leftovers they happily eat and "Riddle now eats whatever he wants and whatever he likes, that was unthinkable before" and adds with a softer smile and tone, "I'm really glad, I really am."
Leona notices this and proceeds to ask him if anything happened in the past, to which Trey says “no big deal,” but proceeds to tell the story of how he and Che'nya met Riddle. Trey recounts that when he was nine or ten years old, he and Che'nya used to take Riddle out of their house to play. They started doing so because they were struck by what kind of kid lived in the fanciest house in the neighbourhood, so they went into his yard. Noting that Riddle is about the same age as his younger brother, he mentions that Riddle acted like an adult and knew the names of all the plants and insects and that he also made use of his magic to pull out a ball that had gotten stuck on the branch of a tall tree. He comments that they were happy to “have a very clever little brother who knew a lot,” so they decided to keep taking him out to play until one day when they took him to his parents' bakery to try a slice of strawberry tart, Riddle's mother discovered them. Cater adds that Mrs. Rosehearts yelled at Trey's entire family for more than five hours, causing Idia and Leona to be overly shocked. Trey says it is a Rosehearts family policy not to allow him to eat candy. Trey says that each household has its own policies, so he couldn't do anything about it. Cater reveals that Riddle, after his overblot and during lunch, told him and Trey that the food was controlled by grams, causing the atmosphere to become tense. Trey insists that being yelled at by Riddle's mother is a funny story now and that his parents don't mind too much. Besides, Riddle has changed quite a bit since being away from his parents, eating as much as he wants, whatever he wants. He then adds “He'd probably be mad if I told him, but both Che'nya and I consider him a common younger brother, so watching him eat and grow up makes me feel really good.” The conversation is again interrupted by the sound of the oven, and Trey retreats to keep an eye on some cookies he has left inside. Cater whispers to himself and the other two that Trey “says that, but he really suffered a traumatic experience,” to which Idia adds that “had such a thing happened to him, he would never have gone near Riddle-shi again” and questions whether or not Trey's heart is made of steel for being a vice housewarden. Leona comments on how a vice housewarden can be elected: By recommendation of the housewarden, nomination, or being voted by the other students in the dorm, theorizing that surely Riddle nominated him and Trey reluctantly accepted, but Cater tells her that this is not the case, proceeding to reveal that, when Riddle entered the school, at the entrance ceremony, Trey was so happy to see him that he started telling everyone about him, saying that “an acquaintance of his from his hometown has enrolled here” and that “he's someone very quiet, but he's very smart and good with magic, please take care of him” after Riddle was accepted into Heartslabyul.
However, Riddle's personality had taken a U-turn, becoming “a cruel queen with an extremely volatile temper” (in Leona's words). Cater comments that Trey tried to get close to her and re-establish the connection they once had despite the trauma Mrs. Rosehearts left on him, but that Riddle always treated him like a stranger, being cold to him and ignoring him, causing Trey to become saddened. After Riddle reformed the dorm after becoming leader, Riddle suggested that the vice leader would be elected by dorm vote, causing almost all the students to vote for Trey against his will. At the time, a hatless Trey can be seen wearing his dorm uniform, so it appears that he had one made once he accepted his role as vice. Cater also reveals that Riddle punished Trey once with his unique magic/signature spell, as well as saying that Trey always supported Riddle, even in the times when his “reign” was getting really oppressive, commenting that “it must have been really hard for him” and that he “surely wanted Che'nya to be there to support him.”
Leona puts an end to the conversation and decides to wake Trey, but Ortho interrupts them by communicating through Idia's tablet, saying that they are in trouble. When they come out into the hallway where the freshmen, Sebek, and Silver are left, it is revealed that Riddle, Cater, Ace and Deuce from Trey's dream are completely and comically round as a result of eating everything Trey has prepared for them. Dream Riddle proudly comments that he is taller than Idia and that it is “thanks to Trey giving him three whole tarts full of egg and bacon every day... The group tries to wake a very confused Trey as he sees two Ace and two Deuce, but the “darkness” interferes. The fake Ace and Deuce take it upon themselves to run the others off while the fake Riddle and Cater try to manipulate Trey into staying asleep. Trey realizes there is something strange when fake Riddle says he will give the first cake slice to Che'nya for being the dorm leader, saying “The first piece is yours, Riddle, otherwise, you'll get mad and it'll be off with the student's head.” The fake Riddle claims he is not the dorm leader, but Trey remembers the time the real Riddle ordered him and Cater to run Ace and Deuce out of the unbirthday party back in book 1. Trey begins to put the pieces together and realizes that Che'nya is not the leader, but Riddle and that Riddle is not capable of eating a whole cake, as he controls the required daily nutrients he consumes meticulously. Both fake Riddle and fake Cater take him to task, eating disastrously and talking with their mouths full, which disgusts Trey. Fake Cater says that “there's nothing that makes Trey happier than watching them eat a lot,” but Trey sarcastically replies that even if he said that, they wouldn't eat that much. Finally realizing that Cater hates sweets and Riddle respects his daily nutrient intake, Trey wakes up.
When he does, the whole group shows up, having disposed of the fake Ace and Deuce with Leona's unique magic. The fake Riddle and Cater try to persuade Trey once again, but he's not fooled, telling them to “not talk with their mouths full” and adding that “not only is it a violation of the Queen of Hearts' laws, but bad manners as well,” a phrase Riddle mentions on his dorm uniform home screen. Once they get rid of the darkness, Trey is brought up to speed with what's going on and they all decide to go to Riddle's dream. He wonders how a simple mage can help with the mess Malleus has gotten everyone into, to which Ace replies “overwriting the dorm leader's magic” causing Leona to tease him. Trey is embarrassed but states that it would have been better to wake Riddle up before him as there is no one more suitable and reliable for combat than him. Cater mentions that Trey is “his secret weapon” to wake Riddle up, causing Trey to get embarrassed and say “Don't expect much from me.” Before leaving, Trey changes into his dorm uniform and a double of him, who must remain in the dream world to distract Malleus, is replicated in the chef uniform he was wearing. Cater takes a picture of him, stating that he will show it to Riddle later.
Before leaving for Riddle's dream, Trey briefly wonders what kind of dream it will be, but first decides it would be best to bring a strawberry tart as a gift. Sebek asks Silver if that's possible since crossing dreams can go bad, to which Silver replies that “the taste won't change even if it's misshapen” (in Lilia's words) and that "It's the feeling that's important. I'm sure Riddle will be very happy with it." Arriving at Riddle's dream, the group lands in the Scarlet City, the capital of the Queendom of Roses and the hometown of Trey and Riddle. Precisely, they find themselves in the neighborhood where the Clover patisserie is located and it is revealed that Riddle's house is relatively close. The group assumes they must go to Riddle's house to find him, fearing they will run into his mother and confront her. Before they begin their search, they are alarmed by the arrival of a police car, out of which steps a Riddle who looks and acts completely different from usual: extravagant clothing, dyed hair, exaggerated mannerisms and a great disrespect for laws and rules. At first, Cater thinks it's a girl or a magicam model, but when it dawns on him that it's his dorm leader, everyone (including Trey) is shocked. Trey says Riddle can't act that way, but Silver reaffirms to him that the glowing bird hovering around him indicates that he is the owner of the dream and, indeed, Riddle. It is revealed that alongside Riddle has been Che'nya and that they were both arrested for singing in the middle of the street. Riddle curses at the patrol driver using Queendom of Roses' slang, further shocking everyone, with Idia confirming that it is indeed Riddle. Trey then comments “Riddle is 17, so it's normal for him to want to get rebellious.” Che'nya and Riddle hear his name from Cater and approach him, with Riddle gleefully hugging him and jumping up and down, playfully scolding him for not letting him know via magicam that he was coming. Trey asks them what they were doing to have been stopped and they both simply mention that they were doing a surprise live on the street and reveal that they have a band, where Riddle is the singer and Che'nya is the bass player.
The group introduces themselves and Riddle offers them to join his band. Cater immediately plays along and forces Leona to do the same, followed by the rest who talk about their musical abilities to Riddle's delight. Che'nya mentions that Trey never joined the band no matter how many times he was asked. Trey remembers how poorly he did at a preschool Christmas performance and adds that in magic school, art and music are mandatory subjects to strengthen imagination, but that he would never choose those classes, as he doesn't like them. Che'nya laughs at him, saying: “You say that, but your acting and singing in a card soldier role you did in a school play wasn't bad” causing Trey to get embarrassed and Riddle to laugh. Riddle then proposes that they go to his house, much to Trey's shock, who seems more frightened than the rest. The latter tells him that it's a bad idea to show up at his house with a lot of people, with Cater agreeing and suggesting going to a cafe. Riddle tells them that's impossible, as all the tea they made will go to waste, and that he often invites his friends over. Trey gets serious, saying that's impossible, as he and Che'nya are banned from his house, causing the aforementioned and Riddle to fall silent and then break into laughter, with Riddle claiming that it can't be true. Trey asks if his mother will be okay with that, and Riddle tells him that she will love seeing Trey again after so long. On the way to Riddle's house, everyone looks nervous, with Cater remarking that Trey looks very pale. Trey thinks he should throw away the strawberry tart he brought with him, but Cater stops him, as “it's part of the plan” and that depending on what Riddle's mother does with the tart in the dream could reveal important information to them.
Riddle cheerfully announces his arrival home. His mother sounds kind and affectionate, telling him she is happy that he has brought friends. Trey is frightened despite this, saying that there is no way that woman could be happy that Riddle has brought friends. Riddle's mother asks him to show them all the living room, filled with family photos where Riddle is always in the middle. Che'nya asks Trey why he has stopped at the entrance, to which he replies that this is his first time visiting his living room. Riddle looks confused, but then says “Oh, so it's the first time since we redecorated.” Che'nya smells the sweet aroma of the white box Trey brings with him, and Trey reveals that he brought a strawberry tart. Riddle shows an unusual reaction of surprise, which unnerves Trey, who says he'll get rid of it. Grim is about to eat it, but Riddle yells at him to stop, saying that Trey brought that tart for him, therefore it belongs to him. He then proceeds to tell his mother that Trey brought him a strawberry tart, with the Trey asking him if it's a good idea to tell her that. Contrary to the expected reaction, Riddle's mother responds in a kind and happy manner, revealing that Riddle loves to eat the tarts from the Clover Patissierie and that they reserve the biggest one for his birthday. Riddle retreats to the kitchen to make preparations and once alone with the rest, Trey has an anxiety attack, breathing laboredly, telling her that he thought his mother was going to hysterically yell at him. Cater congratulates Trey on managing to keep his composure, Ortho remarks that his vitals are unstable due to extreme stress and recommends that he sit down, with Deuce pulling a chair over to him.
Trey smiles nervously and says that he feels pathetic because he's not a kid anymore, that he thought that scolding would just be a funny story, but when he thinks that Mrs. Rosehearts might yell at him again for five hours in such rage, he can't help but get nervous. Che'nya is surprised that Riddle's kind mother yelled at him like that, but Trey says it's no big deal and it's not like he or the actual Rosehearts are going to remember it since they're just a dream. The group then sets about exploring the house, commenting on the pictures they see, in which Riddle is seen happily with his parents and they even find pictures of him with Trey and Che'nya as children: at a school festival, at the beach and even going trick-or-treating together on Halloween. Trey, the only one who doesn't join the conversation, has been silent this whole time with a nervous expression, drawing Cater's attention. Trey says that he doesn't remember being in any of the photos where he appears. While it is true that he knew Riddle when they were little, they only played together for a month or two before they were separated and Riddle always went to private schools, hence the events in the photos are not real.
Riddle returns, catching everyone looking at the photos. Everyone sits down for tea and Riddle brings out Trey's strawberry tart, saying it's super bruised, like pickled tomatoes and laughs at him, asking him if he fell down a rabbit hole or something, revealing that in the dream world, Riddle is much more open and playful with Trey. Riddle then reveals, to everyone's surprise, that he is not a magic user. Trey says that's impossible, as his parents are famous magical doctors and that's why he's been studying since he was little, causing Riddle to laugh, commenting that his mother is a housewife and his father is a novelist. Riddle also reveals that he doesn't go to school, considering it boring and saying that he hates it and that it's pointless. Deuce, along with Ace and Cater, start talking about Heartslabyul's dorm leader, saying wonders about him, with Trey smiling at those words, but with Riddle denying them or making light of them. Riddle insults the dorm leader (himself), causing Ace and the rest to start confronting him and saying they don't want to be friends with him anymore, which angers him to the point that the entire house and Mrs. Rosehearts herself trap them in the living room.
The group tries to escape unsuccessfully and almost drowns in tea. Che'nya appears to speak to them in riddles and taunts them. At one point, Leona confronts him, angrily threatening to turn everything to sand, but Riddle's unique magic collar appears around his neck. Leona asks Trey to overwrite the collar with his magic, with Trey unsure if he will be able to do so, but then agrees, only to end up with the collar himself as well. The situation escalates and more so after the tea level reaches their necks, at risk of drowning them. Trey realizes that they are shrinking. Just then it starts to “rain” and Riddle's voice, mournful and sad, is heard in the background, wanting to find a way out. Trey recognizes his voice immediately. The “rain” is Riddle's tears, who cries louder and louder. Trey begs Che'nya to let him see Riddle, but Che'nya riddles back, adding not to wake Riddle, as he seems to be happier in his dreams, where his parents are kind, and he doesn't have to study. Trey objects, saying “We... no, I can't accept that.” And that he's done so much damage to people with his cruel and prickly tyranny that they can't allow him to pretend that never happened. The rest agree with him, and Che'nya tells them that “if they want to see the queen so badly, let them sink deeper in the dream,” offering to guide them. Eventually, they all sink into the tea and “go down” to the second part of Riddle's dream, which takes place in an alternate scenario where Riddle not only won the duel against Ace and Deuce for the dorm leader's seat but hurts them badly and that the dorm never rebelled against him.
In the dream, Ace, Deuce, Trey and Cater are extremely loyal to Riddle, who is happy with his tyranny and with everyone fearing him. Trey wonders if this is a dream where he failed to overwrite Riddle's magic and managed to hurt Ace after he rebelled against him. Trey says that he was very lucky to overwrite Riddle's magic, to which Silver questions if it was indeed luck. He proceeds to add that when his magic first manifested, his father told him that the original magic was a miracle born of a strong “wish”. The "wish" is a very pure and unbreakable force and that he is certain that Trey's strong "wish" was to "stop his friend's violent acts", which overcame Riddle's magic, much to the surprise of Trey, who finds himself unable to refute or even add anything to what Silver has said. After Che'nya appears and causes Riddle to become entangled in his cloak and fall, he manages to see the entire group hiding behind some bushes and forces them to show themselves, threatening to cut off their heads. Riddle realizes that there are two of each of his card soldiers, as well as falling into the presence of Sebek, Silver, Ortho and Leona.
Leona tells him it's all a dream created by Malleus Draconia and Riddle refuses to believe it, with the fake Trey and Cater telling him he's lying to him. Trey interferes, saying “Please believe what Leona... what we tell you” and that he is having a nightmare, proceeding to ask him to wake up, which is the trigger for Riddle to truly begin to doubt the veracity of the reality around him and wake up. Riddle recalls the moment when Trey tells him, in Book 1, to stop after having overwritten his magic. The fake Ace and Deuce immediately try to persuade him to ignore them and stay asleep, as do all the dorm members saying that Riddle has helped them a lot despite being afraid of him and they see him as a great ruler. Riddle says that he is happy like this, that even though it is all a dream, he is happy because everyone respects him and because he is right, because everyone loves him but at the same time loves him and that he will not give up his ideal kingdom. With the darkness awakening and nothing else to do, they all split up and flee to different parts, being chased by the fake Ace, Deuce, Trey and Cater. Going Cater's route, the fake Trey appears and Cater notices almost immediately that he is fake and decides to set him up, telling Silver that Kalim invited Cater to join Scarabia to escape Riddle's tyranny and that he invited Trey along so they could leave together. The fake Trey is surprised, but agrees with him, falling for the trap and saying that he would never suggest such a thing to Trey and is saddened by the fact that Riddle actually thought that the two of them might betray him and escape the dorm.
On Trey's side, Trey and Ortho have a brief conversation about the Heartslabyul rose garden and Trey looks at it sadly, saying that "someone" would be angry if the plants were wilted or painted in weird colours. Ortho asks him if he means Riddle and Trey tells him that, after becoming leader, Riddle immediately took care of the ill-fated rose garden, fixing it, so seeing the garden so dilapidated, he is aware of how out of his mind Riddle is at that moment. The fake Cater then appears and Trey is suspicious of him, so he sets a trap for him. The group gets to talk about Riddle and his unique magic, with Trey mentioning that it's weird that people call him "aggressive" when he wasn't like that when he first met him, that when he saw him throw Floyd in the air he thought it was someone else, but that seeing him being restrained by the teachers reminded him a lot of his mother. It should be noted that Mrs. Rosehearts represents a trauma for Trey and that Riddle slowly became a copy of her, yet he decided to stick by his side no matter what since he was chosen as vice housewarden and was very happy that Riddle was assigned to Heartslabyul. The fake Cater comments that, the day after moving into the dorm, Riddle approached him and Trey and called him “Clover-senpai”, asking him to help him do the relevant paperwork to challenge the then leader). Trey comments that Riddle ruled through fear and became increasingly isolated. He then decides to set up the fake Cater, saying that when he moved up to third year, he did the paperwork to challenge Riddle for the position. Trey then begins to laugh nonstop as he sees that his trap worked, as that never happened, but then sighs sadly, as he is aware of the fact that Riddle, deep down, always thought that someone was going to challenge him for being unhappy with his tyranny.
Trey then gets caught by the fake Cater and is led towards Riddle, who has every intention of punishing him. Trey, his voice breaking, begs him to stop, but Riddle tells him that he is a mess, that it hurts him to punish a friend and that his tarts were always delicious, but at that, he changes his mind and offers Trey the chance to bake tarts for him as his faithful servant to set him free. Trey replies that no matter what conditions he offers, he cannot obey him at that moment, implying that in a normal situation, he would do so without complaint. Riddle is disappointed and Trey begs him one last time to wake up, but his words fall on deaf ears and he is sent off to be punished. Riddle manages to wake up thanks to a combination of efforts between Ace, Deuce and Ortho, remembering moments where he comes out with Trey. Trey and Cater run to him when they see him come to his senses, happily calling his name. Cater hugs him and Trey says that there is much to talk about between them when everything's over. Riddle replies that, then, he'll have to make lots of tea. The darkness then begins to “swallow” Riddle, and Ace and Deuce try to save him, but Riddle orders Trey and Cater to push them away. They obey and Riddle disappears and then faces his overblot. Finally, he wakes up in the first dream, next to his fake mother, and the first thing he does is ask for his card soldiers, Trey included in them.
Before Riddle was taken over by the darkness, Silver took the whole group with them with his unique magic, as the dream was collapsing. They are transported to Ace's dream and Silver tells that Riddle is still trapped in his dream, falling into a deeper one. Trey is concerned, saying that it is a very cold and dark place and that it is surely dangerous. Leona recounts his experience of being swallowed by the darkness, defining it as an “abyss” where there is nothing and no one, where a terrifying monster (their overbloted self/monster) lurks, which worries Trey all the more. Silver says Riddle may be struggling alone at this point, and Trey asks if there's no way to help him. And though the others show faith in Riddle's power, Trey continues to be dismayed, more so when Ortho says his dream may be “reset” and he's trapped there. Leona complains, telling him that he sounds like a worried father, and though Trey laughs, he adds that while he trusts Riddle's strength, he sometimes shows signs of being surprisingly fragile and childish and that while he's proud that Leona recognizes that Riddle is strong, he can't say that “everything will be okay” when he knows the circumstances of his dream and the possibility that he'll be trapped there. Everyone finally wakes up thanks to Idia and his cheat tool, being summoned as in Twisted Wonderland's batcha system to fight overblotted Malleus.
In heartslabyul, Trey is happy to see Riddle and tells him he's glad he's safe. The group has an “emotional” moment - where Ace expresses his frustrations with Riddle. Riddle understands and thanks Trey and Cater for their help, but Ace is still distraught. Trey playfully tells Riddle to “please praise the freshmen more, housewarden” which Riddle does somewhat awkwardly. Cater pats Ace and Deuce on the head and congratulates them on their effort, but then proceeds to do the same to Riddle, who is surprised. Trey then goes over to him and presumably does the same, telling him he's done a great job, which throws Riddle off so much that he remains surprised and silent, though he then responds in an embarrassed manner. Riddle then proceeds to transform into his overblot form, which causes Trey to look serious, thanks to the memories this evokes. Malleus appears and everyone begins to fight him, starting with Deuce, who protects Trey. Riddle thanks him for it.
In a moment, the darkness intensifies its threat and Riddle decides to use all his power, thanking his excellent card soldiers for their work. He immediately asks Trey to have his back, that he doesn't intend to look back so get ready, to which he replies "I don't have the confidence to say 'leave it to me', but I can't lose here. I'll do the best I can," showing the high level of confidence they both have in each other. After the fight, Trey laments about being a burden, but Riddle reassures him that it's because of his (and Cater's) support that he was able to concentrate on attacking. After Malleus is weakened by all the overblotters and removes his unique magic, causing everyone to finally wake up, he transforms into a dragon, causing the Diasomnia dormitory to start collapsing. Everyone panics and Vil recommends that all leaders task their vice leaders with evacuating the others. Riddle immediately gives Trey the “command of the cardsoldiers,” and he replies in a more self-assured manner to leave it to him and not to do anything rash, showing his concern for him.
At the end of the chapter, after everything is settled, they are all invited to Silver's birthday party that Malleus has arranged. Riddle and Trey can be seen together at the last twistune. It can be assumed that the two had the talk they promised each other after Riddle awakened from his dream.Events[]
Beanfest: Bean or Be Beaned
In the preface to the event, we find Trey and Riddle alongside the other members of Heartslabyul. Ace asks if, since Trey is on the monster team, that means Riddle will be too. Riddle replies that no, vice captains and captains are always assigned to different teams. Therefore, Riddle is on the farmer team. The atmosphere heats up and Riddle joins in on the friendly competition proposed by Cater, to which Trey replies, “He's not either.” As they continue to tease each other, Trey responsibly points out that it's better not to get so heated that they can't sleep, or worse, end up hurting each other tomorrow by glorifying a game of tag. Riddle adds that it's getting late and they shouldn't stay up too much longer.
At the event itself, Trey runs into Rook. After a long chat, Rook reveals that he might want to enjoy the vice-to-vice game with him, but Trey replies that he only cares about surviving long enough not to disappoint Riddle. Rook then asks him why they separate vices from leaders, and Trey assumes it's because of the power imbalance it would create. In the end, they end up teaming up together. Later, with Jack and Azul, Trey expresses his appreciation that Deuce protected Riddle, but not that he let slip information to the enemy. Apparently, Riddle was present when Deuce revealed the information about the botanical garden, so they debate whether it is a trap. Even so, Rook and Trey decide to take a look anyway.
On the way there, Trey mentions how excited Rook seems to be about facing Vil, to which Rook asks if he's not excited about the possible encounter with Riddle. Trey replies that he's not because he doesn't usually compete with him, but he did play tag with him back in the day when they were kids and it would be fun to run around like that with him again. Upon arriving there, Epel alerts Riddle just in time before Trey catches him. Trey laughs and mentions that he got away. From Rook's words, we can assume that he was trying to surround him with both arms, these being: "you weaved away from Trey's arms and rode the wind like a cascade of crimson petals. How charming you are, Roi des Roses!” After that, there is still a fight between the two sides.
With Riddle exhausted, Lilia tells Trey that he is in charge of capturing Riddle. Trey tells him that it's time to be captured and that it's nothing personal. Riddle responds between huffs that he has no more beans and that it was the end for him, but also that Cater was right all along. Trey is curious. Riddle replies that it's the ones who seem the most innocent that you have to be most careful of, and there he is, being captured by him. Modestly, Trey replies that he hasn't done anything special and that he was the one who delivered the final blow, but that Riddle was already on the ropes and that the rest of the group has done more. Rook disagrees and praises Trey's moves with Riddle. After reflecting on the nature of their clubs and how Trey and Rook have still managed to outdo him, Riddle says he is leaving for the moment and calls Rook's attention to the unproductive route he is taking. Apparently, it's because of a Queen of Hearts rule: “Queen of Hearts Rule 412: When you see a pair of moving glasses in the forest, never go back the way you came.” Since Trey wears glasses and the trees in the botanical garden can technically be considered a forest, he doesn't want to risk breaking the rule. While Rook responds that it's fascinating, Trey questions whether any of these rules serve any real purpose. Finally, Riddle leaves.
The Phantom Bride: Love at First Fright
Crowley picks Trey among the possible candidates to woo the ghost, to which Riddle responds angrily that it would be negligent to let Trey take care of it while he watches, so he asks to join them. Crowley, due to his short stature, says no, and Riddle takes offense and complains about it. Trey ends up getting into the conversation again to say that everyone has their qualities, to which Riddle replies that yes, but there's no accounting for taste. Floyd keeps trying to pick on his height, and Trey replies that he should ignore him. In the end, Crowley reiterates that it's better for Riddle not to take this job this time to ensure success.
In the end, Trey ends up trapped. Riddle tells Ace that he is joining the team against the ghost, to which Ace asks if he is not going to rescue Trey. Riddle tells him that Trey is part of that, but that there is something more crucial to rescuing him and Cater: Rule 703: “Anyone who comes in second in a croquet tournament must serve the queen tea the next day.” So he has to make Cater tea for Riddle at some point that day and wants to make sure he gets back in time.
In the confrontation with the ghosts, Ace accuses one of them of being enablers who want to take the easy route rather than have a serious conversation, to which Trey takes the hint.
Vargas Camp 2: The Art of Survival
When Trey appears dressed in the clothes that Vargas gave to those who set up their tents faster than the rest, Cater and Rook compliment his appearance, and the first says, “I'm going to take a picture to show Riddle and the others,” before remembering that his phone was confiscated.
Twisted Halloween: Terror Is Trending
In Part 1 of Twisted Halloween, Riddle gets angry when guests insist on stepping on the parrets, which is a violation of common courtesy, not to mention the Queen of Hearts. Guests or not, he says he won't tolerate rule breakers. Trey asks him to calm down, saying it's frustrating but to please bear with it. It is understood that they are holding Riddle back because of how he asks to be let go.
Twisted Halloween: Spectral Soiree
In part 2 of Twisted Halloween, Trey and Riddle are awake together looking for any students still inside the dormitory. Once they finish counting, Riddle tells his students that a few are missing. He also assigns Trey the task of asking the others if they have seen anyone strange in the dorm. When they meet up with Crowley, they end up splitting into groups. Trey is assigned to Ace and Sebek so as not to leave his juniors alone. Riddle tells them to be careful. After finding an invitation in Ramshackle, they all meet up again to read it. Crowley lets his students take care of the matter. Riddle says he wouldn't dream of embarrassing himself in front of his card soldiers. Trey says they are counting on him and asks Riddle to let him be the backup. Then, Riddle wakes up in an unknown place and the first thing he does is call Trey. Riddle seems quite restless and asks where Trey and Ace are.
When the perspective shifts to Trey, he mentions that there is no sign of Riddle or the others. He is in the group with Sebek and Rook, so there is some friction between the team members. When Sebek gets angry with Rook, Trey intervenes and tells him that getting upset and flying completely off the handle is not a productive way to approach an emergency situation! To which Sebek replies angrily, asking how he dares to criticize Riddle Rosehearts, who are club mates with him and Sebek. Trey questions, confused, when he said anything about Riddle. Eventually, they arrive at another location and both cry out each other's names, relieved that they are okay. The Halloween party proceeds normally once everything is cleared up.
Port Fest: A Striking Performance
When they are choosing groups, Riddle complains that Lilia, the chosen leader, tends to get carried away. He also says that he would have preferred Trey without hesitation, to which Trey modestly replies that he doesn't have what it takes. Later, at lunch, they attack Trey's food. Riddle asks him if he's sure it's a good idea to stay away from the kitchen, to which Trey questions what he means, because he's there because he called him. Riddle says he doesn't remember doing so, and that's when Trey clarifies that it was to prevent Lilia from doing so. Even so, Lilia ended up making his special soup. Riddle interprets this as a kind gesture despite his food crimes, to which Trey thinks Riddle and Jack might be a little off on that. Later, Trey leaves the kitchen to go with Riddle to see Che'nya. It is revealed that after Trey left it, Lilia took the opportunity to sneak in a bowl of soup, which unfortunately the beast catboy tasted.
Playful Land's Miraculous Marionettes
When Ace returns from the mall with the tickets to “Playful Land” that Fellow gave him and other students, Riddle is completely opposed to him skipping class and going to have fun there. Trey arrives just as he is scolding him, saying that “he really has the nerve to invite Riddle to skip class of all people.” Ace tries to argue further, which makes Riddle so angry that his face turns red. Trey immediately tries to calm him down, and Riddle seems to try to listen to him, taking several deep breaths.
After Riddle's definitive “no” to Ace, he runs out of the dormitory and heads for the pier, where he meets other students, including Cater, who after a brief chat points out that Trey is behind him. Trey comments that he knew Ace was going to run away. Ace is alarmed and says, “So, does the dorm leader know?” to which Trey replies, “If he knew, he wouldn't be standing there.” Trey says that for the “peace of the dorm,” he'll cover for him, to which Cater points out that “if Ace is discovered, Trey will be there to apologize to him,” but Trey says, “if that happens, we'll have to divide Riddle's wrath between the three of us.”
Twisted Tsumderland 3
Trey and his tsum prepare a grape cake, which they take to the lounge so Cater can take pictures of it with the tsum. Riddle appears with two students from Heartslabyul, attracted by the aroma. Upon seeing the cake, he comments that it looks good, congratulating Trey in the process. Trey responds that he should direct his compliments to the tsum, as it was in charge of decorating it, surprising everyone present. Riddle says it's hard to believe, but if the tsum is anything like Trey, then it makes sense that it would be so good at decorating cakes. Trey invites everyone to eat the cake, with Riddle being the first to accept, stating that “if it has Trey's seal of approval, then it must be delicious.” After finishing, Riddle says with a big smile that the cake was delicious.
When Trey leaves to wash the dishes, the tsum lunges at the students who came with Riddle to brush their teeth. Upon returning, Trey is surprised by the scene, but smiles mischievously and comments that it is important to brush your teeth after eating. He then asks Riddle and Cater if they brushed their teeth, to which Riddle enthusiastically replies, “Of course,” while Cater looks terrified.
Sam's New Year Sale 2024
Trey is one of four students chosen by lottery to work at Sam's store. When it's his turn to introduce himself, Trey reveals that his motivation for working there is to buy some luxury chestnuts (very expensive) to make a Mont Blanc, which is the cake that Riddle confesses he wanted to eat after throwing away the one Ace and the others made for him before his Overblot.
When Heartslabyul visits the store, Riddle congratulates Trey, saying, “It's to be expected that he can handle so many customers, since he's the vice leader of Heartslabyul.” When Trey tells the others that they can get a “Golden Sam Ticket” to exchange for any item in the store if they play a KOMA battle with him and Ortho, Riddle doesn't seem very sure since the amount to pay is very high (5000 madols/50 thaumarks). However, Trey specifically insists that he play. Riddle says he only came to escort the others so they wouldn't cause trouble, but he accepts the challenge because “it's not every day he has him as his opponent.” Deuce reacts with surprise, saying that his two ‘kashira’ (slang for “bosses” in Japanese criminal language) are going to face each other. Trey tells Riddle that “it's been a while since they were opponents, but he doesn't intend to make it easy for him.”
After the battle, it is revealed that Trey and Riddle's KOMA were the last ones standing until Riddle's stopped, with Deuce pointing out that they had a “1 vs. 1.” Although Riddle is disappointed by losing (not angry or frustrated like when someone else beats him at something), he comments that “without an opportunity like this, I couldn't have faced him, and to get ready for next time.” Trey encourages him to come back, saying goodbye with “it was fun competing seriously with you” (the latter was removed in the localization).
Lost in the Book with Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas
At the beginning of the event, Sebek and Malleus are looking for books. A moment later, Trey and Riddle join them, claiming that they've come looking for a book on manners to "educate" the freshmen in the dorm who have been misbehaving.
After they are "absorbed" by a mysterious book that Grim opens against Leona and Malleus' warnings and meeting Skully, the latter approaches Trey and proposes to "escort" him, to which Riddle replies "Skully, you are truly quite the gentleman! I won't lose to you!". Trey's reaction is "That's what you're really worried about!?"
As the event progresses, the group meets Jack, Sally and other TNBC characters, who propose to prepare the "perfect Halloween." Coming from another world, they ask the NRC students there for help. At one point, when the trick-or-treating tradition is mentioned, Skully seems unaware of it, to which Trey and Riddle, in unison, react in bewilderment and proceed to explain the importance of candy in the holiday. Riddle states that children would be unable to enjoy a Halloween where there is no trick-or-treating, as it is their favorite part. Trey agrees with him and says that "not only kids can enjoy candy" (which implies that Riddle, by not trick-or-treating as a kid, can still do so even if he isn't one). He also comments that he is always busy when Halloween comes around making sweets, to which Riddle replies, smiling, that "the sweets Trey makes for Halloween is always very elaborate."
The next day, everyone continues to discuss Halloween preparations when, suddenly, the problem children "Shock, Lock and Barrel" arrive and start playing pranks on everyone. Trey points out that Riddle has candy stuck to his back, the culprit for this being Barrel. The boy then goes to try to give some of his candy to Leona, who immediately rejects it and sends him back to Trey and Riddle, saying "those two really love candy. They're always having tea parties with lots of sweets, why don't you go and give it to them?"
When they divide into groups (in charge of food, decorations and music), Sally invites Riddle, Trey, Idia and Jamil with her to be in charge of the kitchen. When Idia manifests his bad eating habits, shocking everyone present, Trey is serious and looks like he is going to scold him for it, but simply claims that "bad food will damage your teeth", to which Riddle and Jamil react incredulously. Riddle sighs and says "Trey's habits aside..." and then continues the conversation.
Sally then asks everyone what their favorite food is. At one point, after talking about the diet he follows, Riddle mentions that the meat pies in the cafeteria are delicious. Jamil comments that meat pies are a famous dish in the Queendom of Roses and Trey adds that there is a ghost chef who studied there and that's why his pies are so tasty. At this, Riddle comments in surprise that "he doesn't see Trey eat meat pies in the cafeteria often and thought he hated them." Trey replies that "that's not true, that he eats too many sweets already made with pie dough, he just doesn't eat them from the cafeteria." Sally curiously asks him if he eats such things on a daily basis and he replies that he eats them often, but that he considers cafeteria hamburgers even more delicious. Riddle agrees, saying that he likes them too, but rarely gets them since they run out quickly. Trey comments that he could eat one every day, causing Riddle to surprisingly get angry and reprimand him, "Trey, no way.... if you've broken Queen of Hearts rule 186, which is 'no hamburgers on Wednesdays...!" Trey immediately defends himself, saying it was "just a figure of speech."
Towards the end of the event, after going their separate ways (Riddle chasing Lock to recite a poem due to a Queen of Hearts rule and Trey being a sort of mediator between Leona and Malleus), confronting Skully and saving Jack from the aforementioned's unique magic/signature spell, everyone reconvenes in Halloween Town to continue preparations. Vil comments that the food looks delicious, to which Riddle says that "Trey, the pride of our Heartslabyul, did a great job. Later, Sally offers them all soup as a thank you gift for their help, much to the horror of Azul, Vil, Riddle and Trey. Unable to refuse Sally's kindness, Trey asks if she doesn't have another spoon since his is broken, which Riddle immediately picks up on as an attempt to use the classic pierced spoon Sally uses to trick the doctor by pretending to drink the soup she prepares for him, so he also asks Sally for it. Not finding it, they all decide to drink the soup despite how bad it might taste, but upon doing so, they notice that the taste is different. Vil's tastes like fruit, Azul's tastes like steak, and Riddle's tastes like strawberry tart (his favorite food). Riddle immediately realizes that Trey used Doodle Suit, with Trey saying that it would be impolite to waste Sally's efforts. Riddle congratulates him, saying that he is "very proud to have a vice dorm leader as capable as he is."
At the end of the event, there is a twistune where the entire cast sings a version of "This is Halloween" with Riddle and Trey singing a couple of lines together.
Lantern of wishes Journey to freedom
Riddle, Jack, Deuce and Kalim have been mysteriously trapped in the library. After the teachers intervene and their attempts to escape are in vain, they all decide to recreate the story of the “Princess of the Tower”, which is very popular in the Shaftlands and which they found out about thanks to Professor Trein after showing him a lantern that Kalim caught through a window (their only access to the outside). At some point, the four dress up with clothes provided by Vil and make their hair grow with a potion that Crewel helped them make, with Riddle's hair being the longest (thanks to him being the only one correctly making the potion) and resembling Rapunzel's the most.
After Riddle proposes that the whole school make lanterns to recreate the spectacle the Princess saw at the end of her adventure and motivated by a promise from Crowley that if they helped the four trapped students escape then their absence from class won't affect them, many students from the main cast go to the library to offer help. Ace arrives and starts picking on Deuce, which angers Riddle. Trey arrives just in time to tell the freshman to stop and Riddle's expression changes dramatically from one of anger to a smile after noticing that his vice leader came too. Trey tells Riddle not to worry about the dorm and to concentrate on escaping. Grinning, Trey comments that he was surprised at how much Riddle's hair grew and that he thought he was a stranger. Since the trapped group wants to bake but can't do so in the library, Trey tells them that he has brought them some cookies which they can assemble/decorate with chocolate or jam. Upon noting that Deuce is tired, he also lets them know that he's brought a tea set with warm tea to drink, which makes Riddle smile brightly. However, Trey reminds them to properly brush their tea after their meal, letting them know that he brought some tooth brushes, causing Riddle and Deuce to change their expressions, with the former saing "Alright, we'll make use of them later".
Before Trey leaves, he asks Riddle if he doesn't feel uneasy with that long hair, to which Riddle replies that it does bother him, but he doesn't have a choice but to get used to it and that he'll cut it when everything's over. Trey comments that "it'd be a shame to cut something that grew so beautifully, but I guess that's okay"

After a while doing various activities that the Princess was described to do in several books they investigate, the group decides to escape using the window they've been using to communicate and exchange things with the "outside world", using Riddle's long hair to descend. Riddle, however, refuses to leave the library because he "doesn't want to break the rules." Deuce tries to persuade him to no avail, but then remembers that the very same "rules" are what could help Riddle escape, so he searches through his notes for a Queen of Hearts rule that Riddle can obey in order to get out. After insisting, Riddle still refuses, to which Deuce replies "If you don't want to break the rules, then I'll tell Clover-senpai not to make your tea." Riddle realizes that Deuce is referring to Rule No. 703 "whoever comes second after the croquet tournament must serve tea to the queen the next day". At first, Riddle thinks about calling Trey to serve him tea on the spot, but the group that managed to escape refuses to let that happen and motivate him to change his mind. Eventually, Riddle is persuaded, stating that he would never break a Queen of Hearts rule for anything in the world. He uses his hair to leave the library, thinking about how he promised himself to never jump out of a window again after being caught playing with Trey and Che'nya.
Once Riddle has left the library and after a beautiful twistune where he lights up lanterns surrounded by the ones the students make (Trey is shown teaching some heartslabyul students how to light them), he reunites with Deuce, Kalim and Jack, with Deuce congratulating him for his good job and telling him to rest. However, Riddle refuses, telling him that he must help him with his homework, but first, they'll drink the tea that Trey has prepared for them.
Coral Sea's Eternity Float
When the group (formed by Jade, his mother, Rook, Riddle, Malleus, the prefect and Grim) goes to a fancy restaurant for dinner, they are served crostata for dessert, a typical sweet from Ultramarine City, which Riddle naturally finds delicious. Riddle comments "I wonder if Trey will make it for me if I tell him." and smiles at the thought of eating a crostata made by Trey with the other dorm members as he tells them about his trip.
The next day, they find themselves shopping for souvenirs. Riddle comments that he intends to buy something for Trey, as he is interested in unusual condiments. Jade lists a few of the Ultramarine City's own condiments for him, highlighting sea salt as a specialty and its many qualities, one of which is that it is good for all kinds of dishes. Riddle says "I'm not good with cooking, but is it good for making sweets?" to which Jade affirmatively responds, adding that it enhances sweetness. Riddle replies "Trey would be very happy with that" and buys it.Vignettes[]

Twst-koma[]
In Chapter 8, Riddle mistakenly orders so many carrots for the equestrian club that he ends up handing them out to the dorms, including Jamil. Of course, he recommends Trey if he needs help or inspiration with recipes. When Jamil asks if there are so many that Trey has run out of ideas for all of them, Riddle confirms it.
Chapter 16 has Riddle enlarges a pumpkin for Halloween decorations, explaining that they are creating a skeleton horse to carry it as a decoration. As they create the models for the horse at Heartslabyul, Trey shows up to ask the sex of the horse. Riddle says that even he isn't that picky, but Trey blurts out the curiosity that male and female horses have different amounts of teeth, so he asks what is it? Riddle replies, "which indeed".
Moments[]
- In the Glorious Masquerade event, as Riddle and Deuce prepare to leave, Trey tells them to brush their teeth. Riddle just smiles/laughs (he has that sprite where he puts his hand to his mouth and smiles).
- In the Firelit Sky event, when the group is buying souvenirs, Trey and Cater choose a mug for Riddle. At one point, Malleus points out that Trey has bought a lot of fruit (kiwis, bananas, oranges, etc.), to which Trey replies that it is to make cakes for Riddle.

Chats[]
Riddle & Trey: "Croquet Practice"[5]
Trey: You going to croquet practice today?
Riddle: Naturally.
Riddle: Just like the Queen of Hearts before me...
Riddle: ... I must learn to send a hedgehog through every hoop in a single swing.
Trey: You've improved since way back when, that's for sure.
Trey: It used to take you several swings just to get it through one hoop.
Riddle: W-we were children, okay?!
Trey & Riddle: "An Honorable Job"[6]
Riddle: The Queen of Hearts had many hobbies: tea parties, croquet, and so on.
Riddle: One of her favorites was admiring the roses.
Riddle: She truly prized the garden in the rose labyrinth.
Trey: Then it must've been a great honor to be given the role of garden-keeper.
Trey: Of course, any slip-up and your head is forfeit...
Riddle: With great prestige comes great responsibility. This is a prime example.
Trey: ...Sure, we can call it that.
Riddle & Cater: "Hashtag Indispensable"[5]
Cater: You ever feel like Trey's kinda the king stand in around here?
Riddle: Hm. I can't say I sense a royal air about him, personally.
Cater: No, that's not what I mean. I'm talking the King of Hearts here!
Cater: You know, the guy who devoutly supported his partner, the queen.
Riddle: Are you suggesting that the two of us share the same dynamic?
Cater: Look, I'm just sayin' that as far as Heartslabyul's concerned...
Cater: ... you guys are both hashtag #indispensable!
Deuce & Trey: "Surprise Romantic"[7]
Trey: I hear the King and Queen of Hearts were a close couple that worked side by side.
Deuce: Dang. That sounds kinda nice, actually.
Trey: I never took you for a romantic.
Deuce: Hey, it ain't like I'm tryna be! That's enough smirking outta you!
Trey: "Tending the White Roses"[6]
"It's about time I tended to the white roses."
"Hm? You're right - it's not my turn. But that's beside the point."
"If I leave it to someone else and they mess it up, Riddle gets mad."
"And which would you rather endure? Some rose-tending, or Riddle's wrath?"

Fanon[]
TreyRid is one of the top ships involving members of the Heartslabyul dorm, due to their childhood friendship and trust in one another. Along with Cater comparing Riddle and Trey to the Queen and King of Hearts in a chat. Some have seen TreyRid as the Heartslabyul version of RookVil, JamiKali and JeiAzu, with them being ships between a housewarden and their vice-housewarden, who work tirelessly for them.
It gained traction since book 1 and all the history together they have since the very beginning of the game. In terms of popularity, Treyrid has a fair amount of content. They surpass 300 works on ao3 and 1900 works on Pixiv. While it has more content on the Japanese fandom, western also contributes and are devoted fans to the ship.
They are often associated with RookVil due to Rook being also a vice, being in the same club for helping their leaders, having a stern "queen", and Rook's exclusive nickname for Trey. Both science club members are a token of loyalty and understanding when it comes to Vil and Riddle. Also, are scolded by them if they become too soft on juniors or other students. On the other hand, rarely Vil or Riddle back down their high horse or strictness, yet they contradict themselves when it comes to those two. (Defending Rook's behaviour/Accepting Trey's sweets despite prohibitions).
They can also be found in polycules like CheRidTrey (Che'nya x Trey x Riddle) and TreyRidKei (Trey x Riddle x Cater).
Some of the fanart on the two has them in their apprentice chef wear, and have them cooking together. With Trey being a skilled baker and Riddle enjoying the treats Trey makes.

Trivia[]
- It was confirmed that Trey was smirking and looking smugly at Riddle in his Ceremonial Robes SR.
- Trey is the only character with a different Rook nickname, this being "Rose Chevalier." or "Chevalier des Roses" in the english localization; the rose's knight. The origin of this nickname is revealed in the Wish Upon a Star event, where it's revealed that Rook didn't use that nickname with Trey when they were freshmen and started to call him that way upon Riddle's enrollement. Rook mentions that "to be a Chevalier (knight), one needs of a Roi (king)"
- Trey's second title is: "Club Loyalist". Since the second batch of titles make reference to the characters' roles in their dreams, it's heavily implied — if not confirmed, that the person he's loyal to is Riddle, given the context of his dream and his continued loyalty towards him during the entire story.
- If you combine both of their hairs they make a strawberry, a fruit extremely linked to them both.
- Red and green are complementary colors.
- There are several differences between the game, the novel and the manga:
- The novel reveals that the Mont Blanc (chestnut tart) is something that Riddle has always wanted to eat and Trey wanted to make it for him for a while, but he needed help since it was a complicated recipe. He makes use of Ace, Deuce, Grim and Yuuya to make it, saying that it'll be a "special treat" and also helping Ace to present it as the "apòlogy tart" for the ones he ate the night before.
- During the encounter in the library between Ace and Trey, the later reveals that Riddle's favorite color is green, this one having been decided by his mother herself because "it was good for his vision". Green is Trey's signature color.
- During Riddle's post overblot monologue, he reveals several things about his relationship with Trey and Che'nya when they were children: they showed him things he had no clue about, like playing croquet, what TV shows were popular, the festival that was happening in the neighbourhood and some new born orange kitties, to name a few things. It's also revealed that the strawberry tart Riddle wanted to eat was from the Clover's patisserie. When he eats the tart for the first time and thanks them for letting him try it, Trey responds with a "When you eat it like that with that look on your face, I almost want to be the one thanking you."
- At the end of his monologue, Riddle hears a voice calling him "so gently, so desperately, so indiscreetly". At first, he thinks it's his mother, but after realizing that she'd never do that, he wonder who it is. It's revealed that it's Trey, who's been holding his hand the entire time ("as in a prayer") and calling his name. - When Trey apologizes for overlooking his suffering, it's remarked how sincere he's being, grabbing Riddle's shoulders firmly.
- The manga shows a very worried Trey running towards Riddle when he overblots, forgetting about the danger he might represent in that state.
- The manga also shows Riddle directing his anger at Trey, constantly grumbling or yelling his name during his overblot state.
- It also shows great emphasis in them holding hands, with Trey first holding his hand when helping him out of the window for the first time, to him grabbing it firmly when Riddle finally wakes up from his overblot.
- In the Savannaclaw novel, it's revealed that Riddle himself carried Trey to the infirmary after he protected him from falling from the stairs thanks to Ruggie's unique magic.
