Ugly Frenchmen Club is the poly ship between the Beast, Quasimodo, and Erik from the Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera fandoms.

Canon[]

Despite coming from three different canons, these characters have much in common. Quasimodo and Erik are characters from famous French novels, while the Beast is a character from a famous French fairytale. All three suffer from their own personal physical disfigurements, and are considered "ugly" by society at large. While the characters are all originally from literature, all of their stories have since been adapted into famous musicals; two of which are also animated Disney films.

While the Disney version of Quasimodo is kind despite his exterior appearance, both Erik and the Beast are known for being selfish and perhaps even cruel. While the Beast redeems himself by the end of his film, Erik does not. The Beast is the only member of this trio to end up with a love interest by the end of his story. Both Quasimodo and Erik are on the "losing end" of their love triangles, with Phoesme and Raoulstine functioning as the canonical relationships.

As Quasimodo and the Beast are both Disney characters, they have appeared in a number of crossover media together. They both appear in numerous episodes of House of Mouse, but never together or in any major capacity. In the 100th anniversary short, "Once Upon a Studio", the Beast and Belle sing lines from "When You Wish Upon a Star" together. Quasimodo immediately follows them up by singing the next line of the song. Belle herself also makes a cameo appearance in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which suggests the Beast might also exist inside Quasimodo's canon.

Outside of the Disney and Andrew Lloyd Weber adaptations, both Quasimodo and The Phantom are considered early members of the "Universal Monsters" franchise. Both of their stories were adapted into silent films, which means they aren't always included along the more famous likes of Count Dracula or Frankenstein's Monster. Both Quasimodo and The Phantom were portrayed by renowned character actor Lon Chaney.

Fanon[]

Shipping of the three characters is rare, although comparisons between them are not. Quasimodo and the Beast are both beloved Disney characters, and many fans of Disney crossovers like to think they would be good friends with each other. As all three characters have musical adaptations, not just in film but on the stage as well, they are often beloved by musical theater fans.

Some fans choose to add Jean Valjean or other character from Les Misérables into this group. This is due both to its status as a beloved musical based in France, as well as it being written by Victor Hugo, the novelist for Hunchback.

There are currently no written works for this pairing. It originates from a piece of fan art by user chelshiart.
