Because Mal didn't do much in helping her busy King boyfriend in getting other villain children into Auradon, Uma began to think that Mal had forgotten where she came from and the people who are waiting to be give the same chance that she and her friends were given. Mal's absence from the isle also gave Uma the opportunity to become the new head villain child, when she promised her pirate crew that she'll get them off the isle and will succeed in where Mal failed when she choose good over evil.
Once Uma learns from Harry and Gil that Mal is back on the isle and that her royal boyfriend is also in their territory, she decides to use Mal to bring her Fairy Godmother's wand for Ben's safety.
Descendants 3[]
As Mal makes preparations to bring the next group of young villains to Auradon, the thought of Uma roaming free worries her and after Hades' failed escape attempt, Mal realizes that the only way to keep villains like Uma trapped on the isle for good is to keep the barrier up for forever. Even if it means not giving anymore villain children the chance she and her friends were given.
When Audrey became a villain, Mal knew that she needs Hades' ember to over power her mother's stole staff, and as Mal and her friends leave the isle with the ember Harry and Gils' escape causes Mal to drop it strait into Uma's tentacles. After Uma explains that she has been using her freedom to find a weakness in the barrier, so she could help other villain kids escape, she sees how worried Mal is about getting the ember wet and decides to force Mal into an other deal. Despite knowing that she can't grant Uma's request of freeing the isle's other young residence, because of her earlier decision, Mal "agrees" to Uma's deal. Mal wanted Uma to hand the ember back to her, but Uma's mistrust in Mal has her choosing to keep the ember on her person. Their rivalry, along with both girls being leaders, has Mal and Uma fighting for control over their small group and which ones of their plans that they should follow through, while Evie tries to keep the peace between the them.
As Uma and her pirates help Mal and her friends find Audrey, Uma reminds Mal's group of the things that they don't have on the isle, like fresh food. While Uma recommends that they should search Audrey at the school, Mal decides that they should search the castle instead, since Audrey had also taken the Queen's crown and being Ben's ex-girlfriend would have her going after him. Seeing that she won't be able to change Mal's mind, Uma decides to go along with Mal's choice. Through the staff Audrey learns about Mal and Umas' team up, she brings the castle's suits of armour to life and as the girls and their friends fight them they sing "Nights Fall". During the first part of the song Mal and Uma fought for control until Evie gets them to work together "until the battle is done", once the knights were defeated and Evie tries to get their two groups to bond with each other, Mal agrees to go along with Uma's plan of looking for clues at Audrey's dorm.
Sometime later as the two, along with Evie and Celia Facilier, head to Evie's "castle" cottage to wait for the boys at, Audrey tries to trap them in the build. As Mal tries to free them with her magic, but ends up failing on her first attempt, once Uma's necklace begins to glow however the two realize that they need to combined their powers together. Once they stopped Audrey's attack, Uma tells Mal that her shell likes her before handing the ember back to her. While they continued to wait for boys to return with Ben, Mal and Uma have some cake before Mal apologies for calling Uma "Shrimpy" and that her plan to search Audrey's dorm was a very good idea. Uma thanks Mal for telling her that before she makes her own apology to her. After the two reunited with the rest of their friends, they make their way to the cottage that Audrey was hiding at, but she was gone when they got there.
Seeing how much Uma and Celia are depending on her helping other villain kids, Mal knew that she has to come clean about the part she played in the decision of shutting down the program. Uma was angry that Mal lied to them like that and decides to leave Mal's side. Mal tried to convince Uma and Harry to stay and help, after her friends were turned to stone, but Uma was too angry to listen. Once Uma sees Mal trying to save Celia from Audrey in her dragon form, while trying to dry the wet ember, Uma knew that she had to help her. After Uma tells Mal that she will stay by her side, while her necklace dries the ember, Mal smiles at her. Shortly after Audrey was defeated, Uma hears Mal's confession of Hades being her father and how he'll help them wake Audrey up. Knowing that Mal can't bring the program back up, Uma states that she and her friends need to return back to the isle, so she can look after the other trapped kids. Mal apologies for lying, how she believes that the isle will be safe in Uma's hands and that their time together has allowed Mal to see that they can be friends, before Uma leaves.
At the engagement celebration, where Mal makes her first speech as the future queen, she thinks about Uma and how her actions played a big part in saving Auradon. Mal explains that she also needs to be the queen of the isle and how Uma had helped her to realize that it is time for Auradon to forgive the villains by taking the barrier down. Once Uma sees the barrier being taken down for good, she is glad to see that Mal did come through for them in the end before making her way to Auradon, where Mal and the rest of her friends welcome them to the kingdom.
