Canon[]
Breath of the Wild[]
In Daruk's journal, various topics of Calamity Ganon returning has him recall the day that Divine Beast Vah Rudania was excavated several years ago and was told that it needs someone to control it, though he states that Gorons only care for edible relics before heading out to search for more rocks to have for dinner.
Princess Zelda would later summon Daruk and asks him if he would become the Goron Champion of Vah Rudania, which he agreed to immediately and even loved the idea of a team of six members when he was told that he must work with them. Daruk would then go through a series of trials to prove that he is indeed worthy of being Vah Rudania's pilot, which includes fighting an Igneo Talus Titan at Lake Darman, going through the glowing rings down Death Mountain, and jumping into a glowing ring at Darb Pond. At the end, he passed the tests. However, out of all the Champions, Daruk had the most trouble controlling Vah Rudania while the others managed well, so Zelda and Link travel there to help him gain better control over it. Later when Link personally sees Daruk, who tells him about his dilemma, Link pushes him on Vah Rudania and has him roam aimlessly around the canyons and eventually Daruk began to improve as he learned that experience is the best teacher, which he took to heart. He would have his conversation with Link while on board the Divine Beast where they speak of recent events, until Daruk had to use his barrier to block a boulder rolling from a quake, which has him concerned.
Once Calamity Ganon returns, the Champions head to their Divine Beasts as Daruk went to Vah Rudania. It ends up being the very place where he lost his life when Fireblight Ganon took control of the beast and killed him. Daruk would continuously haunt the interiors of Vah Rudania for a century until Link returned to help him take it back from him. Daruk instructs Link to get a map from the Guidance Stone and to find the terminals that turn on the Main Control Unit and cheers for him as he does. Before Link can activate the Main Control Unit, he ends up having to deal with Fireblight Ganon whom he fights and destroys. Link proceeds to turn it one without any more interruption and Daruk appears to Link and thanks him for returning Vah Rudania to him and after giving him his ability, Daruk intends on bringing the Divine Beast to a different location before Link leaves and does so to take aim. Daruk enjoys the view of Hyrule and is concerned about the fate of the Gorons until he sees Yunobo, giving him much reassurance that the Gorons are still doing very well. Once Ganon awakens, Daruk opens fire with the rest of the Champions to weaken it.
Age of Calamity[]
Daruk is chosen to pilot Vah Rudania, though they would have to make a journey up Death Mountain and reach its crator where it was located, and they find the Goron Mines to be under attack by monsters that threatened to usurp it from the Gorons. Once they make it to the top, Daruk boards Vah Rudania and uses it to fight off the monsters trying to overtake the mines. After that, Daruk agrees to become Vah Rudania's pilot after gaining confidence in his ability to control it despite his initial struggle with it.
Later, after Calamity Ganon returned, Daruk was under attack by Fireblight Ganon and was almost killed until Terrako's Gate of Time brings Yunobo back to shield him from a lethal attack leading to a struggle between the Gorons and the evil entity for the control over Vah Rudania until Link arrived and destroyed Fireblight Ganon. Daruk is grateful for everyone's work in saving him and his Divine Beast before using it alongside Yunobo to fight the monsters and corrupted Guardians in Eastern Hyrule to defend it from enemy forces and uses it again to help back up Urbosa and Riju at Fort Hateno, and uses it to open fire with the rest of the Champions at Hyrule Castle to deprive it of its full strength.
Fanon[]
Vah Darunia is a rareship amongst the fanbase shown with only one fan work in Archive of Our Own though a few fans of this ship exist. Given how Daruk is the pilot of a Divine Beast, he would very often be with Divine Beast Vah Rudania as they find it hard to imagine him being with any other Divine Beast besides Rudania. Daruk has been very patient with Link returning to help free his Divine Beast so he can pick up where he left off and fulfil his duty. In Age of Calamity, Daruk has used Vah Rudania on more than one occasion in battle and after being saved by Yunobo, he collaborates with sharing his control with him and notes that Yunobo's presence has significantly increased Vah Rudania's output, making it stronger than it was.
