“Yes, of course. "Home" is wherever we are together.”
— Archon Quest: Chapter 1 - Act 4: We Will be Reunited
“ I always believed we would see each other again. That our days of separation would finally end. And all my troubles would be behind me... If only things could stay this way forever...”
— Story Quest: Grus Serena Chapter - Xianyun: A Thousand Moonlit Miles

Viatwins is the family ship between Aether and Lumine from the Genshin Impact fandom.

Canon[]

As Aether and Lumine finished venturing out of Teyvat 500 years ago, before all the characters we now see existed, and so they find the "Seal of Teyvat" which sealed Teyvat from other Continents (as it is just a Continent and there may be other Continents surrounding it), they get stopped on their way by one of The Heavenly Principles of Celestia.

The Unknown Goddess attacked the siblings and captured the both of them, sending nightmares on their seal. Those nightmares would be probably the thing they will do when they are separated, and one of them gets sent down to the starting point (or Starfell Valley) and dragged to the Abyss Order by some Abyss Members.

Meanwhile, the other sibling wakes up and gets their power sealed away, trying to find a way to discover their lost sibling.

The remaining of the story is left to whether or not the Traveler progresses through the story, and the longer of the story that doesn't progress is left behind, the Abyss Order will become more powerful.

Archon Quest: Prologue[]

In the Prologue of the game "The Outlander Who Caught the Wind", The Knights of Favionus asked the Traveler what reward they wanted for defeating Dvalin and saving Mondstadt, to which the Traveler replied that they wanted Missing Person Posters put up around Mondstadt to look for their lost kin.

After saving Dvalin, the Traveler heads to Mondstadt, where they reunite with Kaeya. He informs that the Abyss has a leader to whom they call Prince/Princess, but without revealing directly that it's actually their sibling. Although the Traveler doesn't know it yet, The Abyss Sibling is responsible for breaking Venti's sacred lyre to prevent it from purifying Dvalin and causing the Abyss army to attack Mondstadt in a coordinated manner while Diluc and Jean are away with the Traveler, busy confronting Stormterror.

Later, Chapter I of the game "Farewell, Archaic Lord", the Traveler repeated this sentiment, requesting for Missing Person Posters be put up around Liyue Harbor. During the Lantern Rite Festival Event, the Traveler made a wish for their respective sibling, stating it's their sibling's deepest desire or the Traveler hopes that their sibling's wish will come true.

Traveler's Quest Act - Bough Keeper: Dainsleif[]

In Act I, the Traveler met Dainsleif after fighting the enemies, the Traveler sensed something familiar at a cliff, they then went to the cliff and examined the Dandelion, there was a rewind that was from the beginning of the game, if you picked Aether as the MC, he then says "This dandelion...reminds me of..." or "I...could feel her." And if you then picked Lumine as the MC, she then says "This dandelion...reminds me of..." or "I...could feel him.", after that the Traveler then had to get to the bottom of this but Dainsleif stopped the Traveler, Dainsleif was also now leaving.

Traveler's Quest Act - We Will Be Reunited[]

Lumither We Will Be Reunited

The Traveler's reaction upon seeing their sibling again (Lumine's perspective).

In act II, at the end of the act. After the Traveler tries to defeat the Abyss Herald, The Abyss Herald creates a portal but Dainsleif stops the Abyss Herald and the Traveler's sibling appears. The Traveler was happy to meet them again although Paimon notices that the Traveler's sibling blocked an attack against the Abyss Herald. The Traveler's sibling continues to tell the Traveler to not team with Dainsleif because he is their enemy. The Traveler's sibling now says to not stop in the abyss. The Traveler tries to tell their sibling to come home with them, although the Traveler's sibling refuses. The Traveler was confused, the Traveler's sibling tells the Traveler that they have already traveled through this world (Teyvat) once. Once they reach the end of their journey as they did, they will see for theirselves the true nature of this world. (Teyvat) The Abyss Herald now created another portal meaning that the Traveler's sibling would now go but the Traveler tried to get them but the Traveler didn't get to the portal in time while Dainsleif was gone because he went in through the portal. Paimon tells the Traveler that show them (Traveler's sibling) what they're made of.

Story Teaser - We Will Be Reunited[]

In the story teaser, we see Lumine's perspective. She acts as the antagonist and we see what had happened to her in the time that she was away from her brother. In the middle of the video, we see a Hydro Abyss Mage appear and report to her. The Hydro Abyss Mage tells her that someone interfered with the plan to make Stormterror into a weapon and Lumine assumes it is due to the Ameno Archon and questions if he rose again to free the dragon, but the Hydro Mage tells her that instead, it is her brother that is the "issue". When Lumine hears this, she has a flashback from a time when she and her brother were separated by the unknown god. Lumine then instinctively runs to a cliff in Stormterror's Lair, from where she sees Aether fighting against Hilichurls with Paimon. She then says: "We will be reunited, dear brother. But not here. Not now." She says that they will meet at this journey's end, once the dust has settled. When Aether finishes fighting, he goes away with Paimon, after which we see Lumine sitting inside the hand of a Ruin guard and the Ruin guard taking her away into the sunset, and so the teaser ends.

Traveler's Quest Act - Requiem of the Echoing Depths[]

In the Depths, an Unexpected Reunion[]

The Traveler and Paimon accept a commission from Yuehui, a miner, regarding strange hilichurl activity in The Chasm. Believing the Abyss Order is involved, the two venture into the depths of the underground mines and discover an Inverted City which reminds them of the Defiled Statue. Just then, Dainsleif appears from a portal behind them, having pursued an Abyss Herald through its portal only to be separated from it. When Dainsleif chased the Traveler's Sibling into a portal the last time they saw each other, the same thing happened to him then. Dainsleif reveals to the Traveler that the Abyss Sibling was his traveling companion in their search for their fates, but they "did not make it to the journey's end together."

Memories of Inteyvat[]

The three end up in a hilichurl camp, where the Traveler finds an Inteyvat, the Khaenri'ah national flower. Upon touching it, they have a vision of their Sibling and an Abyss Herald discussing their plan to amplify the water pool's special properties, remove the curse from the gathered hilichurls, and restore "the homeland." Due to the reality-changing nature of the curse, Dainsleif deems this a futile effort and tells the Traveler that it will only bring the hilichurls even more suffering. The Traveler decides to help him stop their Sibling's plan, believing that their Sibling has no right to subject others to near-guaranteed suffering for an infinitesimally small chance of redemption.

Archon Quest - Akasha Pulses, The Kalpa Flame Rises[]

After rescuing the Lesser Lord Kusanali, the Dendro Archon gives the Traveler the info about their Abyss Sibling that she could collect from the Irminsul. She reveals the Traveler that themself is the Fourth Descender from the fact that they come from another world, but for some reason, the Fatui don't consider their Abyss Sibling a Descender, despite meeting the similar condition. Unfortunately, the Irminsul didn't have more info about their Sibling, so the Traveler prepares to travel for another region.

Traveler's Quest Act - Caribert[]

The Traveler meets Kaeya at a tavern in Port Ormos in Sumeru. During this meeting, the Traveler picks up information that Kaeya is a descendant of the Alberich family and that this links him to the Abyss. When Dainsleif appears, Kaeya leaves the two alone in their own meeting.

Arriving at a small farming field, Dainsleif finds the area familiar and they investigate. However, some monsters are seen nearby and after defeating them, Dainsleif believes that the problem might be with the Ley Lines. Thus, Dainsleif leaves the camp for the moment and the Traveler decides to camp there. Paimon asks about the Traveler's sibling, and the Traveler responds that they had frequently looked together at the stars, pointing out planets they wanted to visit, and shares that their stop at Teyvat marked the first time they had been separated. Paimon volunteers to take watch, so the Traveler falls asleep and dreams of their sibling.

Upon awakening, the Traveler hears a noise in a house and eventually meets a grumpy man who nags all the time, but later becomes friends with him. The man introduces himself as Eide and later, he introduces his son, Caribert, who has become a Hilichurl due to not having pure blood. The Traveler then decides to help Eide in any way they can. But along the way, they find out that Eide was asking the gods for help and none of them answered him, so he resorted to another way. Eide went to a place where there was another "god", who is actually one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah, who granted the power of the Abyss to Eide. But later, they learn that Caribert ran away. Seeing him near a cliff, they found him there, but Caribert was already imbued with the Power of the Abyss, as he took off his mask, causing the Traveler to become unconscious.

Once they regain consciousness, Eide reveals himself as Chlothar Alberich and addresses the Traveler as his "Prince" or "Princess," causing the Traveler to pick up the mirror and see themselves as their sibling before falling unconscious again as Chlothar declares his intention to use the power of the Abyss to fight the gods. Upon awakening from this dream, the Traveler realizes that they have actually lived the life of their Abyss Sibling in that dream what happened there.

Grus Serena: Xianyun's Story Quest[]

Xianyun reveals the Traveler that the device in question is the "Suspensus Somnium Mechanism", a device that releases a soft breeze and gentle adeptal tune that could listeners subconsciously relax and enter a semi-hypnotic state, which could help restore lost memories. She tests it in Yuandai first.

After Yuandai finished with her test, Xianyun asks the Traveler to relax to the device, and as they do so, they dream of their sibling and spending time with them across Teyvat. The Traveler then wakes up from their dream with a tear starts to fall down on their cheek, then they later remarks to Xianyun that it was a good dream but unsure, though Xianyun is aware that they weren't ready to wake up.

Traveler's Quest Act - Bedtime Story[]

The Traveler and Paimon received a commission from Katheryne to find a missing person from Vimara Village. The commission is jointly issued by the residents of Vimara Village and a dozen successive efforts to complete it have all ended in failure. Katheryne informs them that none of the residents know the missing person's name and they can only provide his general appearance. The Traveler and Paimon accept the commission and head out to Vimara Village.

This commission led the Traveler to meet Dainsleif again. Together, they worked to gain further insight into the Loom of Fate, an operation the Brother of the Abyss wishes to use to try to destroy Teyvat before Celestia awakens.

Just as the Traveler and Paimon leave, the Abyss Sibling appears, wielding their Twilight Sword in an attempt to confront and stab Dainsleif from behind.

Meanwhile, the Traveler, in an attempt to find his sibling once again meets Caribert, this time in his human form, who decides to teleport him to his own consciousness. The Traveler has no idea what he would do with the completed Loom of Fate, but Caribert dissapears as the sibling arrives.

The Traveler is delighted to see their sibling again, but discovers that they cannot physically touch them. The sibling explains that they did not belong in Caribert's memory and were thus intangible, and that they would be ejected soon. They share a short conversation, where the sibling explains their motives for continuing their war against the divine. They are in a rush to fully unlock the Loom before the Heavenly Principles would awaken, as they did not do so despite the Divine Throne of Hydro being destroyed. They also express their loneliness to them, wondering if their actions were the right choice. Caribert's memory then begins to collapse, and the sibling informs then that they would not remember the conversation as they are separated.

After they wake up, the Traveler would have lost all memories of their sibling forever if it weren't for Caribert, by his own means, capturing a photo of his consciousness, that moment of that meeting.

Archon Quest - Chapter V[]

Upon meeting Capitano in person, the Traveler learns that, despite being the Number One of the Fatui, he is one of the ancient survivors of Khaenri'ah who is cursed with immortality. Capitano even realizes that the Traveler is the Prince/Princess of Khaenri'ah's twin sibling.

The Natlan region is constantly under attack by the Abyss on a large scale. The Traveler decides to fight the monsters of the Abyss that want to destroy the entire Natlan region, although Mavuika, the Pyro Archon, is the one who manages to finish them all off. Although the Traveler never considers it, it is possible that it is the Abyss Sibling who is behind all these attacks and is trying to destroy Natlan because it is under the influence of the Pyro Archon, who like all Archons, is linked to Celestia.

Songs[]

Thousand Years | Christina Perri
The song is often associated with Aether and Lumine in the Fandom, especially because of the lyrics “I've died everyday waiting for you,” because the twins missed each other, "All along I believed I would find you"", because the Traveler is doing what the Abyss twin says for them to reunite again, and “I have loved you for a thousand years.” because they traveled together for thousands or millions of years
Like Him | Tyler, The Creator (feat. Lola Young)
The song is often used for both twins in the Fandom, because characters like Dainsleif and Capitano says that Traveler and their Abyss sibling are similar, which matches a lot with this lyric: "Do I look like him? (Like him, like him, like him, like him) I don't look like him (Like him)”

Quotes[]

“May you find your kin at the end of that journey. Well then, let us part ways here for now.”
— Dainsleif to Aether/Lumine
Dainsleif“At least you now know that he/she is still on this world. At this time, the most important thing is the journey to find him/her itself.”
Aether/Lumine“And I will find him/her.”
— Dainsleif telling Aether/Lumine the most important thing for him/her
“We will meet at this journey's end... Once the dust has settled.”
— Lumine to Aether
Aether/Lumine“Lisa and Amber feel a bit like sisters.”
Paimon“Huh? Why's that?”
Aether/Lumine“Amber often runs errands for Lisa. Older siblings asking their younger siblings to do things for them so that they can slack off is a rather common practice... But my brother/sister and I are the same age, so we had to decide these things via rock-paper-scissors.”
Paimon“Whoa. So, doesn't that make you my younger sister/brother?”
Aether/Lumine“What do you mean?”
Paimon“Well, since Paimon floats, you're the only one who can "run" any errands!”
Aether/Lumine“...Seriously?”
— Aether/Lumine's Voiceline about Sisters
“Yes. You're the brother/sister of the Prince/Princess. Given the role I held in Khaenria'h, I would prefer not to harm you.”
— Capitano to the Traveler
“You remind me of the Prince/Princess. The similarities in your approach are striking, especially when you told me you wanted to win."
"I hope you will see him/her soon.”
— Capitano says that the Traveler reminds him of their Abyss twin sibling.

Fanon[]

This ship is rather popular as a familyship, due both of them being canonical siblings. Although, they haven't had much interaction in the main story, it's clear that the Traveler cares about their other sibling and wants to get their sibling back. This ship is quite popular as finding the other sibling is one of the biggest themes in the story.

Due to both of them having a clear sibling bond, this ship isn't popular as a het ship, as incest ships aren't exactly popular in the fandom. However, most of fans that are new or that don't know the Genshin Impact lore tend to ship them romantically as a het ship which makes them rival most of Aether's ships such as his het ships with girls from Aether's harem or Lumine's ships with any boy, even rivaling slash and femslash ships. (Xiaother, AyaLumi and XiaoLumi, for example) This is favored by the fact that some playes aren't even interested in reading the Archon Quests, trying to skip them at all costs even if the game itself doesn't have a Skip button. It is rumored that miHoYo loves to make their games sad and have a sad ending, and as such there are a lot of theories that the twin that the player did not choose would die or betray the twin chosen by the player. Or in "worse" cases, the Traveler would have an option to join the Abyss Order to simply reunite with his sibling at the cost of destroying Teyvat, killing the Archons, destroying the Heavenly Principles and founding "Neo Khaenri'ah", which would be considered a bad ending anyways.

Just because there are still shippers that ship them romantically, this ship receives hate and negativity, mostly from detractors of this ship that are mainly fans who don't like incest or they simply like to pair them with any of the other characters, such as ScaraLumi, Ayather or ChiLumi, for example.

This ship currently has 1,948+ fanfictions on AO3, with the majority featuring them being shipped as a family.

Trivia[]

  • "Viatwins" in particular is a portmanteau word for Lumine and Aether's Constellations, 'Viatrix' and 'Viator'.
  • In the voiceline "About Being Siblings", it's confirmed that Lumine and Aether are the exact same age, and that they decide who has to do errands with rock-paper-scissors.
    • According to the Chinese, Japanese and Korean pronouns the twins use to address each other in the opening cutscene and in later interactions, Aether is the older twin and Lumine is the younger. With the English translations not making any distinction on which is the older/younger twin.
  • No default name is given for the Traveler at the start of the game. Their real name, Aether (male) or Lumine (female), was first determined through the name the Traveler calls their sibling by in the opening cutscene. Later, during We Will Be Reunited, their sibling calls the Traveler by their real name regardless of the name the player chose.
  • The Traveler is one of the characters with ornaments that glow. While wearing their default outfit, Rising Star, when the Traveler's Elemental Burst is ready, various parts of their outfit will glow the way other characters' non-Vision gems glow along with their Visions. On Aether, these parts are his chest plate, the wrist joints of his gauntlets, arrow shaped areas on his kneecap guards, two diamonds attached one to each half of his cape, two accents in his shoulder guard and two orbs, one hanging off the end of his scarf, the other in his earring. On Lumine, the glowing parts are her chest plate, the wrist joints of her gauntlets, the diamond at the top of each of her boots, an oval on her waist at the back of her dress, the diamond at the end of each tail on her scarf, and the stem in each Inteyvat flower in her hair. These parts change color based on the element (or lack thereof) with which the player's Traveler is currently resonating.
  • The Traveler has no object that appears to be a Vision while wearing their default outfit, Rising Star, but when switching to the Traveler when their Elemental Burst is ready, the projected elemental symbol that is typically seen over other characters' Visions is seen over their chest plate.
  • In the Traveler's Chinese official introduction, as well as the first official artbook, their profile's Constellation parameter reads 命之座 (伪) "Constellation of Life (Pseudo)", which is not found on any other character's profile. In-game, the Traveler's Constellation parameter is named the same as everyone else's.
  • Despite their youthful appearance, the Traveler descended on Teyvat five hundred years ago and has been traveling between different worlds for an unknown amount of time before that, making them older than they look. In a developer video regarding Azhdaha's design, one developer mentions that "the Traveler's life span is by no means short." A running gag in the game features the Traveler hoping to drink alcohol only to be rebuffed, probably on account of their youthful appearance. On other occasions, the Traveler voluntarily rejects alcohol. Voiceover lines with Paimon indicate, however, that the Traveler thinks and acts in a manner befitting a mature adult.
    • As such, a select few characters are aware the Traveler comes from outside Teyvat:
      • Barbatos, Morax, Ei, Lesser Lord Kusanali, and Haborym are aware of the Traveler's origins, likely due to their status as one of The Seven. The Tsaritsa is also likely aware of this.
        • Although she was maintaining a façade of being an Archon, Furina is aware of the Traveler's origins, as the Traveler told her about it during their discussion prior to her trial.
      • Neuvillette is aware of the Traveler's origins, likely due to being one of the Seven Sovereigns and their shared experiences of being outsiders to Fontaine.
      • Fischl is somehow able to determine this without any logic.
      • Like Fischl, Kamisato Ayato also determines this without any reasoning behind it.
      • Mona determines this through her astrology.
      • Albedo compares himself similarly to the Traveler while also discerning this through their ability to use multiple elements without a Vision.
      • Similarly to Albedo, Kaedehara Kazuha also notes that the Traveler is capable of using multiple elements without a Vision, while also commenting to them that they have an "incredibly complex" smell that he compares to a mysterious being.
      • During Sayu's story quest, the Traveler openly declares in front of her that they're a "Traveler of countless worlds".
      • Xinyan also knows that the Traveler is not from this world. Based on how she talks about this fact, it seems that the Traveler has deliberately told her about their origin.
      • Ganyu has at least been able to clue in that the Traveler is different from other people of Teyvat, viewing them as something not exactly human similar to herself.
      • Aloy was told by the Traveler that they also aren't from this world, and that they stayed to look for their sibling.
      • The Traveler reveals this to Nilou, Navia, Kirara, and the Wanderer at the end of Summertide Scales and Tales by saying they have "traversed many worlds" in their blessing to Mini Durin.
      • Through fortune-telling, Citlali determines this and the Traveler's status as an Descender. Xilonen is present when Citlali reveals that she knows this.
  • The Chinese version of the opening cutscene trailer is titled 空中荧火 "Luminescent Lights in the Aether", which incorporates both Aether and Lumine's default names.
  • According to the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean pronouns the twins use to address each other in the opening cutscene and in later interactions, Aether is the older twin and Lumine is the younger. The English translation does not make distinction on which is the older/younger twin.
  • As children, both twins had imaginary friends.

Etymology[]

  • The English name "Aether" is the name of the fifth element in ancient and medieval science, which fills the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere.
    • In Greek mythology, the god Aether was the personification and god of the clear upper sky which embodies the air that the gods breathe. The Greek word Aether, both modern and ancient Greek, also means sky.
    • In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, his name is 空 "Sky, Air, Void." In Buddhism, this word is used to denote the concept of Śūnyatā, which has multiple meanings but generally relates to the lack of intrinsic, permanent existence or nature.
      • In the Japanese Godai philosophy of the five elements, which is based on both Buddhism and the Chinese Wuxing elements, Void is the highest of them.
  • In English, Lumine is of Latin origin and means "light."
    • In the Chinese version, 荧 Yíng means "luminous" or "bright."
    • In Japanese, her name is 蛍 Hotaru means "firefly".
    • Lumine and Raiden Ei have Chinese names that are spelled similarly, differing by only one letter: 荧 Yíng (Lumine’s Chinese name) and 影 Yǐng (Ei’s Chinese name). “Yíng” means “light and glow,” while “Yǐng” translates to “shadow and dark.”
  • Their Constellation, Viator or Viatrix, are both Latin for "traveler." The terms are the masculine and feminine forms of the word.
    • The Chinese name for their Constellation, 旅人 lǚrén, also means "traveler."
