Back when Victor Fries served as one of the most brilliant scientists and cryogenic researchers at GothCorp, his wife Nora came to be infected with a deadly disease that there was no cure for. Refusing to let Nora die and hopes that a cure will be discovered, Victor tries to use his resources at the company to save her, by developing a special freezing cell that would cryogenically hold her. Because Victor's unauthorized project had put the company in debt, from misappropriating it's money for the sake of saving Nora, Ferris Boyle decided to put a stop to it. Around the time Nora was already placed in cryonic stasis and Victor was in the middle of recording the experiment, for science. Victor tried to stop Boyle from going anywhere near his wife, by pointing a gun at him and the guards, but when Ferris smooth talked Victor to slower it, Ferris attacks Victor. Leading to an explosion that has Victor be knocked into the cryogenic freezing tanks that accidentally soak his entire body with its freezing solution, while he cries out Nora's name as he reaches out to her. Because the accident left him being unable to survive outside a sub-zero environment and has to wear a specially made suit to keep himself alive, Victor Fries becomes Mr. Freeze as he turns from shy to being full of rage, hate and revenge.
"Heart of Ice" opens with Mr. Freeze looking a snow glob of a dancing ballerina that resembles Nora, as he wants to remember her the way she should be in his mind. He believes that Boyle had left Nora to die like he did with him, fuelling his need for revenge towards those who wronged him. Although Batman foiled his plans and gets sent to prison, the Dark Knight was able to expose Ferris's crime towards Freeze and his wife, thanks to the recording Victor Fries made on the day of the accident. In his cell he pulls out the snow glob from its hiding place, as he uses it to say the words he wishes that he could tell Nora. Feeling that he had failed her.

The Cold, Cold Heart DLC has Mr. Freeze trying to retrieve Nora from GothCorp's Propellant Lab, after Ferris Boyle took Nora and her cryo-tube away from Victor. When Nora was struck with a rare disease and her husband placed her in cryostasis, in order to slow down the disease, Victor devoted his time to finding a cure for her illness. Once Boyle discovered this and wanted Victor to build him cryogenic weapons, he promised Victor that he would help him save Nora, by funding research for Huntington's Chorea. Once Victor learned that Ferris had no intention to hold his end of the deal, he decided to do the research himself. His boss didn't like that and took Nora to punish him, and as Nora was being rolled out of his lab the accident that turns him into Mr. Freeze happens. Knowing that he can't reach Nora on his own, he hires Penguin to kidnap Boyle, for the promise of weapons. Although Batman stopped Freeze's plans, he does help him to save Nora when her damaged cryo pod nearly kills her. After the Dark Knight keeps Freeze from dying himself, the weakened villain tries to reach out to his wife. Managing to say her name, before the screen goes black.
Both City and Knight has Nora being taken from Freeze, in order to force him to work for the people who took her. Despite him trying to kill Batman, the Dark Knight still helps him to save Nora from her captures. Unlike Arkham City, Arkham Knight has Nora waking up and reveals that she knows what has become of her husband. From the times Freeze would talk to her during Nora's long years in stasis. Because Freeze still didn't have answers to cure her illness, he wanted to re-freeze her after learning that Nora has woken up. Something that Nora didn't want and tries to speak with him.

After DCAU created a whole new back story for Mr. Freeze, by turning him from a cold hearted monster to someone who loves the wife he wishes to save, it got many to feel synthetic towards Freeze. So like Harley Quinn and a few other original DCAU characters, Nora and the story he shares with Victor get added to the comic, from how popular it became. As other DC related medias have used and retold their tragic love story. Along with the Fries couple being given their own graphic novel on how they met and fell in love.
Players of Arkam Knight loved the way the game gave the two a happy ending. With most of Freeze's stories have ended sadly one way or another, while the Arkhamverse has the two reunite and simply spend the remaining time they have left together. That way when Nora's illness takes her, Victor would simply walk into the warmth of the sun so he can be with her. While one group still see that outcome as sad, another group like to think that they were at least able to find happiness before their story came to an end.
