- Vitani – “(mockingly) Where’s your pretty daughter, Nala?”
- Nala – “(fiercely) Vitani!”
- — The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride
Vitanala is the family ship between Vitani and Nala from The Lion King fandom.
Canon[]
It is unclear when Vitani and Nala first became acquainted. They knew each other by name and by sight, even though they presumably had not met since Vitani was a cub. Vitani did address Nala first, which may have jogged the older lioness’ memory. Whatever their previous acquaintance, the two evidently regarded each other as enemies.
Nala is not known to have objected to the expulsion of Vitani and her fellow Outsiders from the Pride Lands. Whether she did or not, Vitani targeted Nala during the later battle between their respective factions. Vitani, either noticing the absence of Nala and Simba’s daughter Kiara or simply trying to anger the older lioness, questioned Nala about Kiara in a mocking tone. Nala responded with angry recognition of her antagonist, and the two were soon grappling.
As it turned out, Kiara would be a major factor in halting the conflict between not only the two lionesses, but the two warring parties. Joined by Vitani’s brother Kovu, Kiara appeared to stop the fight. Moved by her words, Vitani would be the first of the Outsiders besides Kovu to forsake the conflict. Nala, in turn, made no objections as Vitani and all of her comrades except Zira were welcomed back into the pride.
Vitani later formed several of her comrades into a new Lion Guard, the group responsible for protecting the Pride Lands. Nala is not known to have objected to this, at least while the true Lion Guard led by her son Kion remained absent on a journey. After Kion's Guard returned, the two teams eventually competed to determine who would continue to act as the Lion Guard. Nala observed the contests between the corresponding members of each Guard. She apparently approved when Kion conceded to Vitani and appointed her as the new leader of the Lion Guard.
Fanon[]
Nala and Vitani's most prominent interaction in The Lion King franchise has sparked a theory that there is more to their relationship than is stated. Vitani’s taunt about Nala's "pretty daughter" and her targeting Nala in particular are among the factors that inspired the speculation. Taken with the lack of close resemblance between Vitani and her stated mother, Zira, as well as her brothers Nuka and Kovu, the theory suggests that Nala is, in fact, Vitani’s mother. Fans of this idea point to Scarla, suggesting that Scar fathered Vitani.
Under this theory, Nala-whether or not she was Scar's willing mate-eventually rejected Vitani. Zira, in her fanatical devotion to Scar, then took Vitani in as her own daughter. Vitani would thus grow to resent Nala for this act of abandonment, and that resentment would extend to Kiara, Vitani's half-sister under this premise. However, the theory is not universally popular.
Opponents of the theory presumably are opposed to Scarla and the notion that Nala would, willingly or not, have been the mother of a child of Scar. Moreover, some fans of The Lion King favor the ships Kopa x Vitani or Vitani x Kion. Naturally, if Vitani were revealed to be Nala’s daughter, either of these pairings would become a romantic relationship between half-siblings.
