Weirdgirl Polycule is the poly ship between Franziska von Karma, Kay Faraday, Maya Fey, and Ema Skye from the Ace Attorney fandom.
Canon[]
Franziska, Kay, Maya, and Ema never all appear together in-game, largely as a result of them being main characters in separate games. However, almost all of the girls have met one another. The sole exception to this is Kay and Maya. While the two girls do appear in the same location at the same time (in The Kidnapped Turnabout, Kay and Miles Edgeworth can look from the Gatewater Land bridge to a boat with Maya and Phoenix Wright), neither girl knows of the other and they never talk in game.
However, many of the individual pairings—namely Franziska and Kay, Kay and Ema, and Ema and Maya—are shown to be good friends in game. Kay is the closest person Franziska has to a childhood friend, and after reuniting in Ace Attorney Investigations, the two are shown to deeply care for one another. Kay and Ema meet for the first time in Investigations and quickly get along. Ema and Maya don't meet until Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice, but when they do, they quickly form a friendship and soft spot for the other.
Franziska and Maya, as well as Franziska and Ema, are also acquaintances. While Maya acts as an assistant to Phoenix Wright in many of his cases, Franziska faces him multiple times in court, pitting the two somewhat against each other. Additionally, Franziska and Ema are both present in A Turnabout Forsaken, both assisting Miles in the case in order to find out what had happened to Kay.
In terms of characterisation, the four girls also share many similarities with one another. For example, all of their motivations stem from a desire to be like one their family members (Franziska and her father, Kay and her father, Maya and her mother, Ema and her sister). Additionally, each girl loses a family member they look up to as a result of a law-related incident (Franziska's father in the DL-6 retrial, Kay's father in the second KG-8 incident's trial, Maya's sister as a result of research into a past case, Ema's sister as a result of blackmail over a past case).
Moments[]
- Franziska, Kay, and Maya all have moments within the games that can be interpreted as having sapphic implications.
- Franziska is generally much harsher to men than she is with women; the only exception to this is with her brother, Miles Edgeworth.
- Kay states that she wants her new Yatagarasu trio to be "girls only."
- In Turnabout Big Top, Maya claims that she finds Regina Berry "cute."
Fanon[]
While the Weirdgirl Polycule is a rarepair in the Ace Attorney fandom, it is greatly enjoyed by its fans due to the potential of the polycule. While the girls never all meet one another in canon, there is basis for them meeting, considering many of them know one another and the characters that don't (Kay and Maya) have multiple mutual friends and acquaintances. Additionally, to some fans, the dynamics of many pairs (rather than only two pairs) between the girls are appealing; thus some fans, especially multishippers, are drawn to the idea of combining all of these dynamics within a polyamorous ship.
However, the Weirdgirl Polycule's individual pairings are more popular, especially Franmaya and Faraskye, which are the most popular pairings for the girls by far (and, in the case of Franmaya, one of the most popular in the overall fandom).
