Gus was Willow's only friend after Amity and Willow broke their friendship. In "Labrynth Runners" it was revealed that Willow was also Gus's only friend before they meet Luz. Willow met Gus when he was sad because his friends were using him, and she helped him to control his magic with a special breathing trip that helped him to calm down. Their friendship has Willow taking the time to hear Gus share facts the Isles has on humans, before Luz came into their lives. Knowing how much Gus finds the human realm fascinating was got Willow to share Luz's presence on the isle with him, as sharing a human friend with him would make his day. Along their lives becoming more existing and adventurous than they were before.
The first season has Willow looking out for Gus, who was more of a kid than she was, and the two being used to only having each other as friends. From how everyone else wanted nothing to do with them, until Luz set a chain of events that has made Willow and Gus noticeable in a good way at their school. While the season two showcases how much the two have grown since the first season, as they become more confident in themselves and braver to face many danger they encounter with their shared friends head on. Just as Willow had looked out for Gus during season one, the second season has Gus looking out for her.
Season One[]

Willow and Gus have commonly been featured together ever since they first appeared in the series. With them being each other's friends and enjoy hanging out, within or outside the school. They were used to being over looked by others and throwing themselves into their separate ways interests. Until they met Luz and found their lives become exiting, as well as dangerous. But it hasn't stopped them from hanging out with her.
For a long time the two have always wanted to do a Moonlight Conjuring together, but they need a third person or more to do so. Once they finally found their third person the two were exited to be given a chance to do a proper conjuring. Willow wanted to use a plant for it, but Gus's puppy dog eyes got her to agree with the idea to use a human realm doll. Despite the ups and downs they had with Luz that night, Gus and Willow did enjoy themselves.
Similar to how Willow snuck Luz into the school to show up Amity, Gus ends up sneaking Luz back in it to maintain his role as club president of the human persuasion society. Willow tried to talk Gus out of it, knowing the trouble he and Luz would be in once their caught. Gus, however, reassures Willow that he got everything covered and that everything would turn out alright. Even though Willow was proven to be right in the end, she was glad that Gus was alright when he escaped the detention chamber.

After Willow decided to form her own flyer derby team in "Any Sport in a Storm," Gus agrees to become one of her teammates. From knowing that she has had a tough year and wants to do what he can to ensure that she doesn't get hurt any further. This is why he tells the mysterious Caleb to not do anything that would end up harming her. Like getting the whole team captured so they'll be forced to join the Emperor's Coven. Even though they were all able to escape from Darius and were then protected by the Golden Guard who tricked them. Gus still didn't like the way that Hunter's lie had caused Willow some pain, and wasn't sure if he was okay with Willow still excepting the Golden Guard as a member of their flyer derby team.
With Willow reconnecting with Amity and making up for lost time in their friendship, Gus was starting to feel left out. It also kept him from noticing or remembering how much she has changed recently when he and Hunter were approached by a fake Willow. This made Gus feel bad about himself, he and Willow have known each other for a long time and he is skilled with illusion magic, but him being too happy to see "Willow" kept him from noticing Adrien's illusion trap for him and Hunter. Willow gets informed of Gus's capture from Hunter, who wants to save him as much as Willow does. After Gus was saved Willow hugs him, as she was happy to have her friend back and to know that he is alright. The two then learn the truth about Belos and what awaited all of them on the Day of Unity, and even though they couldn't join the C.A.T.s in the main part of their battle, Willow and Gus still wanted to help their friends in whatever way they can. That is why they wanted to join Hunter when he was sent to escort Luz, and to save Amity.
Little did the two realise that the side mission they and their friends were on would send them deeper into the main battle. After Gus was asked to cast an illusion spell to save Hunter, but couldn't tell Willow Luz's plan. As there wasn't time to share it and he needed to focus on the spell, until Luz as Hunter was captured. Resorting in them racing to their friend's rescue and having to fight monster form Belos. Until the Collector was freed and forced all of them to flee to the safety of the human realm. Even though they were safe from the new greater danger, Gus and Willow were saddened that their way home was gone and have become trapped in another realm.

Despite being trapped in another realm and being far away from their families, Gus and Willow found ways to enjoy their time in the human realm, with the rest of their trapped friends and human carer during those months. Like Gus, Willow was enjoying learning new things about the human realm and couldn't wait share what they have seen and learned with their families.
In the epilogue, Willow has her hand on Gus's waist as well as Hunter's during the light show.
Fanon[]
Despite their friendship, WilGus is a rarepair. Most people prefer to ship Huntlow, Boschlow and Gustholomule romantically and ship Gus and Willow as friends along with Luz and Amity. There have also been people who saw Willow acting like a sister figure to Gus. The ship actually has 28 romantic works on AO3. Before Hunter was introduced, some would ship WillGus romantically, others preferred them platonically. A lot like their friendship and how close they are with each other. This ship gets some hate due to the age gap between the two.
