The monster, a woman in white, tells Sam he will be unfaithful - but not when, or to whom. In My Time of Dying (2x01)
“Dean, you gotta hold on. You can't go, man, not now. We were just starting to be brothers again.”
— Sam talks to an unconscious Dean in 2x01, In My Time of Dying

The episode starts with Sam asking if Dean and their father are okay after the car accident. Dean is in a coma and spends most of the episode as a spirit. Sam visits Dean's room at the hospital and Dean tries to communicate with him but to no avail. Sam wants to find a way to save Dean and gets angry at John when he doesn't seem to want to cooperate. Later, Sam tells Bobby not to discard the Impala as Dean will want to fix it. Back at the hospital Sam and John have a second fight about Dean that Dean breaks up. Sam uses a Ouija board to communicate with Dean and is relieved when Dean responds. Dean speaks with a reaper named Tessa but refuses to leave with her because he cannot leave his family behind. When Dean is healed, John tells him to watch out for Sammy, to save him or kill him if saving him fails.

Everybody Loves a Clown (2x02)
Sam“Well, before we go stabbing things into Cooper, we're going to want to make damn sure it's him.”
Dean“Oh, you're such a stickler for details, Sammy.”
— Some light banter between the brothers in 2x02, Everybody Loves a Clown

While Sam and Dean watch their father's funeral pyre, Sam asks Dean if John told him something before dying but Dean keeps the secret. One week later Sam tries to get Dean to talk about their father's death but he refuses. Sam finds them a case saying "it's what Dad would have wanted us to do", surprising Dean. Dean makes fun of Sam for his fear of clowns. They try to get hired at the carnival and Sam tells the owner that neither he nor Dean want regular or to go to school. Later, Dean asks him if he meant it and Sam responds that he isn't sure but he wants to do what John would have wanted him to do. Dean notices Sam's strange behavior.

Sam tries once again to get Dean to talk about John's death but Dean refuses to share and tells his brother that he's the one having issues. After the case is over, Sam tells Dean he was right about him but that neither of them are fine and Dean should find a way to deal with it.

Dean“I was gonna kill her. I was gonna kill 'em all.”
Sam“Yeah, Dean, but you didn't. And that's what matters.”

Sam“Guess I might have to stick around to be a pain in the ass, then.”
Dean“Thanks.”
Sam“Don't mention it.”
— Dean thanks Sam in 2x03, Bloodlust

Sam and Dean work on a case involving vampires. They meet a hunter named Gordon Walker whom Dean saves by beheading a vampire with an electric saw, which Sam finds concerning. Dean takes a liking to Gordon but Sam is wary, telling him that only Dean gets to call him "Sammy". Sam leaves and Dean tells Gordon a story about John. He says that he cannot talk about this stuff to Sam because he needs to keep his game face on for his brother.

Back at the motel Sam tries to dissuade Dean from killing the vampires because he thinks they're peaceful. He also disapproves of Dean's association with Gordon because he thinks Dean sees him as a substitute for John. Sam tells his brother that he can see through his facade because he knows how Dean feels. Dean then punches Sam.

Back on the hunt, Dean sees Sam was right about Gordon and the vampires. When everything's done Dean tells Sam about his feelings on the case and thanks him for being there to make him change his mind.

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (2x04)
Sam“Dean, I don't scare easy, but man, you're scaring the crap out of me.[…] You're lucky this turned out to be a real case. Because if it wasn't you would have just found something else to kill.[…] You're on edge, you're erratic - except for when you're hunting, because then you're downright scary. You're tailspinning, man. And you refuse to talk about it and you won't let me help you.”
Dean“I can take care of myself, thanks.”
Sam“No, you can't. And you know what? You're the only one who thinks you should have to. You don't have to handle this on your own, Dean, no one can.”
Dean“Sam, if you bring up Dad's death one more time I swear…”
Sam“Stop. Please, Dean, it's killing you. Please. We've already lost Dad. We've lost Mom. I've lost Jessica. And now I'm going to lose you too?”
Dean“[…] I hear you. Okay? Yeah, I'm being an ass. And I'm sorry.”
— Dean apologizes to Sam in 2x04, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things

Sam wants to visit Mary's grave, Dean doesn't understand why but still goes with him. At the graveyard Dean sees what he thinks are signs of a case but Sam thinks Dean just doesn't want to think about their parents. Even after it is revealed that Dean's instincts were right, Sam is still worried about his brother.

After the hunt is done Dean apologizes to Sam and admits to him that he knows their father died to save him. Dean tells Sam that he feels guilty because Sam and John are the most important in his life and he feels he should have stayed dead.

Simon Said (2x05)
“Come on, give me a break. You're not a murderer, Sam! You don't have it in your bones.”
— Dean tries to dismiss Sam's concerns in 2x05, Simon Said

Sam and Dean investigate a case involving another special kid named Andy. All signs point to Andy being the one murdering people but, while Sam is worried he could become a killer like Max Miller, Dean refuses to believe Andy is guilty and that Sam could turn bad. When Dean is forced to tell the truth he says that he hopes Sam is wrong but he is starting to believe he might be right.

Back at the roadhouse Dean refuses to tell Ellen Harvelle about the case because it involved special kids like Sam but Sam tells her anyway.

No Exit (2x06)

The Usual Suspects (2x07)
Dean to Jeff Krause“Hey, thanks for the law review, Matlock.”
Later, Sam to Jeff Krause“Sure thing, Matlock.”
Jeff Krause, in response“You two really are brothers, aren't you?”
—2x07, The Usual Suspects

Sam and Dean investigate a case and get caught by the police. Despite the police trying their best to make Sam incriminate Dean, he categorically refuses to turn against his own brother. In their separate interrogation rooms they both get the same idea: "Dana Schulps" is not a name but an anagram. Through their lawyer Dean sends Sam a note saying it's a street name. He tells Sam to escape the police via code while he occupies them by pretending to confess.

Worried she might be the next target, Dean sends detective Diana Ballard to find Sam and reveals to her how they find each other when they get separated. He tells her to go the first motel listed in the yellow pages and to look for Jim Rockford. After the case is solved, Sam and Dean leave to find the Impala.

Crossroad Blues (2x08)
Dean“Well, what do they got on you?”
Sam“I'm sure they just haven't posted it yet.”
— Dean teases Sam in 2x08, Crossroad Blues

Sam and Dean compete over who has the longest police record and Dean mocks his brother for being jealous. They work on a case involving a crossroads demon and get the confirmation John sold his soul to save Dean. Sam reassures Dean by telling him John did it for him and them saving people is their father's legacy. However, Sam is worried Dean might have considered selling his soul to revive John.

Croatoan (2x09)
Sam“Dean, don't do this. Just get the hell out of here.”
Dean“No way.”
Sam“Give me my gun, and leave.”
Dean“For the last time, Sam. No.”
Sam“This is the dumbest thing you've ever done.[…] Dean, I'm sick. It's over for me. It doesn't have to be for you.”
Dean“No?”
Sam“No, you can keep going.”
Dean“Who says I want to?”
— Dean refuses to leave Sam in 2x09, Croatoan

Sam gets a vision of Dean killing an man and decides they have to investigate. The brothers arrive in Rivergrove, Oregon and discover the town is full of bloodthirsty people. They suspect mass demonic possession and argue if the townsfolk are still people or if they have become monsters. They learn from the doctor they're quarantining with that the culprit is a demonic virus.

Sam's vision then almost plays out when Dean wants to shoot a man who's potentially been infected. After arguing about it with Sam, and Sam telling him he's not acting like himself, Dean decides not to kill the man. It turns out to have been the right choice and Sam asks Dean why he didn't do it but Dean doesn't answer.

Later, Sam gets infected by the virus but Dean stops anyone from shooting Sam and even refuses to let Sam do it himself. He decides to stay with his brother even if it kills him but the doctor informs them Sam is immune to the virus. They leave town and Sam questions Dean about his behavior when they thought Sam was infected. Dean then tells him has to do to with something John told him.

Quotes[]

Main article: Winchester Brothers/Quotes

Fanon[]

“They're going to come together and then in the second half of the season they're going to start drifting apart… The boys are kind of like The Defiant Ones in that they're kind of chained together and one moves ahead and drags the other one with him and then they reverse and… It's the epic love story of Sam and Dean.”
— Eric Kripke on the DVD commentary for episode 5x04, The End[4]

Sam & Dean is the second and third most written Supernatural ship on AO3. The pairing has 15,100+ works under its tag as a family/platonic relationship and 31,000+ works for the romantic relationship. It is the fandom's oldest ship, with the first fic being published hours after the pilot aired in 2005.

Romantically[]

“I know they don’t (think it’s real)–it’s a hot fantasy. But I think, and you can probably help me out with this, that it might stem from their love of the two characters and how much they have invested in Sam and Dean, and there are really no characters that they want coming into that realm. I think it’s their love for these two characters, they don’t want anyone to interfere. They want it to be just the two of them, all the time, and I think that’s where it stems from. I don’t think they really think we’re gay. So I really think it’s just the fact they are left with no other option when thinking of these two characters, and of course these guys are together. Though I wish that two guys can just be heterosexual males and still have a brotherly love. But that’s why it’s called fiction!”
— Jensen Ackles, when asked about Wincest in Fandom at the Crossroads: Celebration, Shame and Fan/Producer Relationships, by Lynn Zubernis and Katherine Larsen, p. 220

Although the two are brothers, the romantic ship between Dean and Sam, often referred to as "Wincest" is quite popular. Wincest is the second most written Supernatural ship on AO3. It is less popular than Destiel, but is more popular than ships like Sastiel or Sabriel.

The ship even sparked a common saying both for the two itself and even in other fandoms, quote "Incest is Wincest". Often used by incest shippers as a slogan.

Trivia[]

  • Dean's first words in the show were "Night, Sam" and his last were "Hey, Sammy."
  • Sam was initially meant to be 20 years old before the show began but it was later decided to age him up to 22 years old. Therefore Sam should have spent 4 years at Stanford. However, the writers forgot to change Dean's lines in 1x01 Pilot and 1x03 Dead in the Water where he says that he hasn't spoken to Sam in "nearly two years" and that he has been with John "every single day for the past two years" while Sam had been "off to college going to pep rallies". Because of this discrepancy, some fans like to think that he kept contact with Dean for 2 years.[5]
  • Sam named his son Dean, after his deceased brother.
  • Sam is named after his maternal grandfather, Samuel, while Dean is named after his maternal grandmother, Deanna.
  • Dean almost always loses to Sam when playing Rock, Paper, Scissors because Sam knows he almost always picks scissors.[6]
  • Dean and Sam's late girlfriend Jessica Moore share the same birthday of January 24th.
  • Dean killed two of Sam's "love interests", Ruby and Amy Pond.
  • During the course of the series Sam and Dean have hugged 22 times and have been part of 4 group hugs (with Castiel, Donna, Mary and John respectively).[7]
  • Accross 327 episodes, Dean has called his brother "Sammy" a total of 327 times.[8][9]
  • Wincest has been referenced four times in the show: in 4x18, 5x01, in a deleted scene in 5x09 and in 10x05.
  • Sam and Dean are mistaken for a couple 6 times in the series in episodes 1x08, 1x18, 2x11, 4x01, 8x04 and 10x06.[10]
  • In the episode 5x16 Dark Side of the Moon, Ash implies Sam and Dean are soulmates.
