- Trucy... happy, smiling Trucy... she was my light.
- —Phoenix on Trucy, Turnabout Succession.
Wright Family is the family ship between Phoenix Wright and Trucy Wright from the Ace Attorney fandom.
Canon[]
Phoenix and Trucy share a father-daughter relationship through adoption, Phoenix having adopted Trucy at eight after she was abandoned in a courthouse by her biological father when he vanished to avoid his guilty verdict. Phoenix raised Trucy from this point on; while they struggled financially following Phoenix's disbarment, the two share a loving relationship and care deeply for one another.
Flashback Sections[]
Turnabout Succession
Phoenix and Trucy first met seven years before the events of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney during the trial of Trucy's biological father, Shadi Enigmar. While Phoenix was not Enigmar's original defence attorney, Enigmar became dissatisfied with his original and thus hired Phoenix to replace him. Out of spite, Enigmar's old defence attorney gave Trucy a piece of forged evidence that he claimed would help Phoenix prove Enigmar's innocence; instead, he tipped off the trial's prosecution as to the defence's intent to present forged evidence. The trial came to a halt as Phoenix was revealed to present forged evidence in court, forcing the trial to end early with Enigmar positioned to get a guilty verdict. To avoid this verdict, he instead employed a magic trick to escape the courthouse, leaving Trucy behind.
As Trucy's mother was not in her life, she had thus been left alone; Phoenix agreed to watch over her and, after some time with no word of Enigmar, he adopted her. Shortly after the failed trial of Enigmar, Phoenix's status as a lawyer was brought up at a Bar Association meeting; all but one member of the Bar Association voted for his disbarment, and he lost his job.
The Seven Year Gap
With Phoenix no longer a lawyer, he and Trucy struggled financially for the next seven years. Phoenix found a job as a bad piano player in the Borscht Bowl Club, with a secret side job as a (non-gambling) poker player notorious for being undefeated in the game. This feat was achieved with the help of Trucy, who possesses a supernatural ability to detect "tells" for people's nervousness, allowing her to detect when Phoenix's enemies were bluffing. Additionally, Trucy further assisted Phoenix financially by performing magic shows.
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney[]
Turnabout Trump
Seven years after his trial, Shadi Enigmar, now going by the name of Shadi Smith, resurfaced and met with Phoenix (without Trucy) in order to transfer the inherited rights for Magnifi Gramarye's magic tricks to Trucy. After doing so, he challenged Phoenix to a game of poker; however, over the course of the night's events, Enigmar was murdered. Phoenix took Enigmar's locket—which contained a photo of Trucy—from his corpse. However, he ended up being accused of the murder.
In order to hide their presence, the true murderer took a key piece of evidence—an ace of spaces with a drop of Enigmar's blood on it—from the scene. Thus, to help her father be found innocent of the murder, Trucy gave Phoenix's attorney a forged bloody ace that he could present in court during Phoenix's trial. After the attorney uses the forged evidence and Phoenix is found innocent, he reveals to the attorney that the evidence had not been legitimate. It is unclear as to whose idea the forged ace was, but as Phoenix would have been able to create it himself in the detention centre, it is implied that Trucy played a part in its creation.
Moments[]
- In Turnabout Succession, Phoenix comments that Trucy was what helped him get through the "dark place" he was in after his disbarment.
Quotes[]
Turnabout Succession
- Phoenix – “Trucy, there's something we need to talk about. It's been two weeks since your father... disappeared. We need to start thinking about... your future. ... ...I was wondering if you wanted to stay with me for a while. Just until your daddy comes home. It won't be long. (...I hope.) ...”
- Trucy – “...Mr. Attorney. Daddy told me about you. He said I could trust you.”
- Phoenix – “Huh...? Really?”
- Trucy – “So, if I stay here... ...does that mean you'll be my family?”
- Phoenix – “Huh? Uh... Um... I guess so? (Getting weirder...)”
- Trucy – “Um... Mr. Attorney?”
- Phoenix – “Er, actually, why don't you call me... Nick. ...Or you can call me "Daddy" if you'd like. It doesn't have to be today, or anything.”
- Trucy – “OK! Say, Daddy?”
- Phoenix – “(That was quick.)”
- — Turnabout Succession, MASON System sequence.
- Trucy – “Hey, Daddy? You won't...”
- Phoenix – “Don't worry. I won't vanish, I promise.”
- — Turnabout Succession, MASON System sequence.
- Phoenix – “I think that's probably enough for today. Sorry to ask you so much all at once like that.”
- Trucy – “It's OK! After all, we're family! I just hope you're ready! The Wright Talent Agency opens tomorrow!”
- Phoenix – “Wh-What!? B-But are we... representing anyone?”
- Trucy – “Me and you... That makes two, Daddy...!”
- — Turnabout Succession, MASON System sequence.
- Phoenix – "Sometimes when magicians vanish, they leave something behind... That's how Trucy became Trucy Wright... my daughter. To be honest, I was pretty lost those first few days. Thinking back on it, it was a pretty dark time in my life. But Trucy... happy, smiling Trucy... she was my light."
- — Phoenix on the State v Enigmar trial's aftermath, Turnabout Succession.
- Trucy – “You know, I knew my real daddy was alive.”
- Apollo – “Huh...?”
- Trucy – “I was there, seven years ago, remember? I was the one who helped him "vanish" from the courtroom!”
- Apollo – “Y-You did wha... How?”
- Trucy – “I'm not telling! ...He promised me [that he would return], that day he went away.”
- Apollo – “Oh... Trucy... (In the end... he couldn't keep that promise, could he?)”
- Trucy – “It's OK! Phoenix is my daddy now. Even if he can't really play the piano.”
- — Trucy reflecting on Enigmar and Phoenix, Turnabout Succession.
Fanon[]
The Wright Family is one of the more popular ships in the Ace Attorney fandom. This is both influenced by the fact that it features one of the game's titular characters in Phoenix and another main character in Trucy, but also due to the large potential for representations of Phoenix's and Trucy's relationship over the seven year gap and throughout Ace Attorney 4. Fans enjoy exploring the complex dynamic between Phoenix and Trucy, especially in the circumstances surrounding Trucy's adoption and their non-perfect life during the seven year gap.
Overall, the Wright Family is the sixth most popular ship in the fandom and the most popular family ship in the fandom.
On Ao3, they have 954 fics in the gen tag.
