- — Yoriichi to Sumiyoshi (Tanjiro's perspective), Chapter 186
YoriSumiSuya is the friendship between Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Sumiyoshi Kamado, and Suyako Kamado from the Demon Slayer fandom.
Canon[]
According to the Sengoku Rumors, the three met when Sumiyoshi and Suyako moved into an abandoned hut that Yoriichi and Uta originally lived in. Directly after Yoriichi was exiled from the Demon Slayers, he decided to revisit the hut he and Uta once lived in. There, he stumbled upon Sumiyoshi and Suyako, who, in the final month of her pregnancy, were under attack by demons. Yoriichi intervened and rescued them. Afterwards, Suyako went into labor, and Yoriichi rushed to find a midwife. Thanks to Yoriichi's assistance, Suyako safely gave birth to Sumire, her and Sumiyoshi's daughter. Yoriichi felt absolution from saving the couple, since him and his wife, Uta, were unable to live happily with their child. [1]
Yoriichi and Sumiyoshi[]
During the birth of Sumiyoshi and Suyako's second child, Sumiyoshi had Yoriichi watch over Suyako and their child while he was away. Sumiyoshi apologised for having Yoriichi run errands for him, offering him food as an apology. Yoriichi didn't mind, but he was anticipating leaving their residence soon, since he thought eating free meals was an impolite gesture. However, Sumiyoshi reminded Yoriichi that Suyako, himself, and their two children were alive because of him rescuing them from the attack that could've potentially ended their lives. Sumiyoshi asked for his name, to which Yoriichi did not answer. He declined Sumiyoshi's interpretation of him being special, claiming that he was a man of no worth.
In the 186th chapter, Tanjiro, who was dangerously close to death, was viewing an inherited flashback from Sumiyoshi's perspective. “Sumiyoshi's” thoughts are from Tanjiro and are happening as he reviews the flashback, whereas Sumiyoshi speaking aloud has already happened in the past.
Yoriichi approached Sumiyoshi, Tanjiro recognized him as “the swordsman of the original breath.” It wasn't shown, but eventually Yoriichi and Sumiyoshi sat together. Yoriichi begins to converse with Sumiyoshi, describing his past. He described his mother, his brother, Michikatsu, even Uta, his late wife. Eventually, he explained his reasoning for becoming a demon hunter, and how he met Tamayo and Muzan Kibutsuji. In the next chapter, he continues by explaining his effortless fight against Muzan, and his interactions with Tamayo. Tanjiro also recognized Tamayo once Yoriichi gave a few descriptions of her expressions and her name. Yoriichi explained how he was exiled from the Demon Slayers, since he failed to kill Kibutsuji, let Tamayo escape, and because his brother, Michikatsu Tsugukuni become a demon. A few demanded that he be executed, but the current Oyakata-sama (master) prevented it from happening. Sumiyoshi reminded Yoriichi that he was not to blame. Yoriichi continued by expressing his belief that he was born with a special strength particularly to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji. Yoriichi claimed that his failure to defeat Kibutsuji was the reason innocent people continue to die, and that it pains him to think about.
In Tanjiro's perspective, he noted all the tragic events that had happened to Yoriichi. He was so astonished that he couldn't muster up any words, even though he believed that Sumiyoshi had said something at the time. So the two sat in silence. Tanjiro felt compelled to do something for Yoriichi, that was until Sumire began to tug on Yoriichi's haori. Sumiyoshi asked for Yoriichi to carry her, claiming that she gets happy when raised into the sky. Yoriichi complied with Sumiyoshi's request.
Yoriichi and Sumire[]
Directly after Sumiyoshi's request for Yoriichi to raise Sumire into the sky, Yoriichi held Sumire up, watching her closely as she smiled. Tears began to flow from Yoriichi's eyes as Suyako approached them, because of how Yoriichi lost his wife and child, calling out for Sumiyoshi in the process. Suyako abruptly stopped, asking what was wrong before realizing it was Yoriichi. Yoriichi continued to hug onto Sumire. In the 192nd chapter, Yoriichi was seen receiving a flower from Sumire and she clung onto him as he spoke with Suyako.
Yoriichi, Sumiyoshi, and Suyako[]
It wasn't shown, but after Suyako approached Sumiyoshi and Yoriichi, she kneeled down and patted Yoriichi's head, asking Yoriichi why he was crying, but she was given no response. Suyako reassured Yoriichi that everything would be fine, even claiming that she would let him eat until he was no longer hungry. Sumiyoshi/Tanjiro watched silently. Sumiyoshi began to cry, watching how Yoriichi and Suyako interacted with each other. Tanjiro reminded himself that they (Demon Slayer Corps) were amidst a battle, and that Yoriichi had passed hundreds of years ago. Despite this, Tanjiro still hoped that Yoriichi's heart could be spared, even if it was just a bit.
In the 192nd chapter, Tanjiro notes when Suyako begged Yoriichi to perform his sword moves, Yoriichi complied, because of his kind attitude. Sumiyoshi examined the moves closely, memorizing them without missing a single detail. Tanjiro continued by stating that when Suyako and Sumire were overjoyed by his skills, Yoriichi hung his head low in a way that made him look embarrassed. Suyako and Sumiyoshi told Yoriichi that he was free to visit again, but as he was leaving, he placed his hanafuda earrings in Sumiyoshi's palms. This gesture signaled to Tanjiro that Yoriichi would no longer be visiting them. Tanjiro observed that Yoriichi's expression seemed melancholy as he turned and walked away. As Sumiyoshi watched, he began to cry. Sumiyoshi stuttered as he called out for Yoriichi, telling him that he would preserve his earrings for the future, and reminding him that him and Suyako were the lives that Yoriichi had protected. Sumiyoshi continued by yelling that Yoriichi was not worthless, and that Yoriichi shouldn't believe that he didn't achieve anything. Sumiyoshi promised that he would pass on Sun Breathing and Yoriichi's hanafuda earrings to his descendents.
As Sumiyoshi waited for Yoriichi's response, Yoriichi simply thanked him. Tanjiro claimed that he should be the one expressing his gratitude, since he was the one who saved his ancestors, Suyako and Sumiyoshi. If it wasn't for Yoriichi, Tanjiro would've never be born.
Fanon[]
YoriSumiSuya isn't commonly noticed in the fandom, but is a well-received friendship for Yoriichi. Fan depictions occasionally focus on Yoriichi and Sumire's relationship, rather than Yoriichi, Sumiyoshi, and Suyako's. In Yoriichi and Sumire fanworks, Yoriichi and Sumire possess a father-daughter-like bond despite not being blood-related. The most plausible reason for this is Yoriichi's wife, Uta, passing before she could give birth to their child, so Yoriichi imagines Sumire as their unborn child. Another possible reasoning behind this is because of Yoriichi being close friends with Sumire's parents. If Yoriichi had not saved them, Sumire would have the same fate as Yoriichi and Uta's unborn child. It is possible that Sumiyoshi gave Sumire or her younger brother Yoriichi's hanafuda earrings, and she/he passed them down to their children until they reached Tanjuro and his son, Tanjiro: since Sumiyoshi promised that he would pass them down to his descendants. Yoriichi's earrings became a heirloom of sorts for the Kamado Family.
The ship can also be perceived in a romantic sense, where Yoriichi joins Sumiyoshi and Suyako's existing relationship and the three become polyamorous. In a romantic relationship, the ship can fall under the Doppelgänger Dating trope, since Uta and Suyako share striking similarities appearance-wise, and Sumiyoshi and his descendent, Tanjiro look similar due to their blood-relation.
Romantically, the YoriSumiSuya has 11 works on AO3. Generally, classified under the tag “Sumiyoshi & Suyako & Yoriichi”, the pairing has 3 works.
