Assault Lily Bouquet[]
This 12-episode main anime is entirely focused on Riri and Yuyu's early story.
Episode 1
Yuyu is an incredibly talented Lily from one of the world's most prestigious training academies. One night, during a catastrophic invasion of Huge monsters resulting in what would become known as the Koshu Evacuation, Yuyu saves a civilian Riri's life. Captivated by Yuyu's appearance and her kindness and strength, Riri would subsequently deeply remember their brief encounter and be inspired to become a Lily herself. Two years later, through much effort, Riri barely makes it off the waiting list into the Yurigaoka Girls Academy, the very same school that Yuyu is currently enrolled as a 2nd year Lily in.
On her first day on campus, Riri unexpectedly comes across a commotion involving Yuyu, who is being challenged to a fight by a 1st year Lily, Araya. Through the other Lilies, Riri finally learns what Yuyu’s name is and also that Yuyu has a reputation for working alone. Chaos ensues when Kaede, another 1st year Lily, butts into the scene and nearly gets into a fight against Araya herself, however, and Riri subsequently steps in to stop Kaede, objecting to Lilies fighting each other. Yuyu misinterprets all this, though, and assumes all 3 Lilies want to fight her now, causing both Riri and Kaede to panic while Araya complains about no longer being able to solo fight Yuyu. They’re interrupted by an alarm going off however, and student council president Shinobu arrives to scold the Lilies and to inform them about an escaped Huge monster. She forbids Yuyu from acting alone since this Huge can mimic its surroundings and assigns Kaede to go with her, much to Yuyu’s annoyance who claims that Kaede will slow her down. Shinobu then tells those without combat experience to head to the gym, but Riri insists on going along with Yuyu and Kaede instead. Recalling Riri’s fast reflexes when stopping Kaede earlier, Yuyu agrees and immediately heads out, with Riri scrambling behind introducing herself while also wondering why Yuyu’s personality has become so much colder than she remembered.
While exploring a nearby area, Yuyu suddenly detects the Huge appearing from behind Riri. Riri attempts to draw her CHARM but hasn’t made a pact with it, so the weapon fails to activate. Yuyu immediately comes to her rescue, using one of Riri’s buttons as a flash bomb while carrying Riri away, but Riri still gets a cut by the Huge in the ensuing attack. While being berated by Kaede, Riri apologizes while Yuyu claims fault for not realizing Riri’s inexperience. She helps Riri make a pact with her CHARM for her, overlapping her hand over Riri’s as they clasp the CHARM’s handle together and Riri’s blood trickles down to her Magie ring. As the CHARM starts activating, Yuyu explains to Riri how that’s happening. She tells Riri not to let go until the CHARM is finished while she goes to counter the returning Huge but before she can, the Huge appears to attack them both directly and Riri quickly shoves Yuyu to the side. In the next split second, Kaede flies past them with her weapon out, almost skewering them, and Yuyu uses Riri’s ribbon as a makeshift weapon to temporarily stun the Huge. Yuyu later reflects how the Huge was trying to get the Lilies to hit each other, and Yuyu claims that Riri’s quick reflexes had stopped Yuyu herself from slicing Kaede into two earlier. The Huge then attacks them again and the resulting fight causes rubble to start falling around them. Riri shoves Kaede into a hole for safety and then is herself shielded by Yuyu as more rubble and Huge gloop falls on them.
While the two are in quarantine afterwards, Yuyu warns Riri that her cut will result in a scar while Riri happily spins it as a reminder of today’s events with Yuyu. Recalling their first brief encounter, Riri notes how Yuyu had changed her CHARM from before and shares how she remembers that Yuyu had saved her life two years prior. Realizing that this is why Riri had enrolled into Yurigaoka in the first place, Yuyu comments how Riri has a reckless personality. Moyu enters the room as the two’s quarantine finishes up and she thanks Yuyu and “this girl” for their help, which results in Yuyu correcting her, saying that the girl’s name is Riri. As they exit, Kaede suddenly hugs Riri, claiming Riri to be the girl of her destiny while apologizing to Yuyu of her sudden lack of interest in the latter girl. Yuyu does not care at all, however, and walks away, leaving the two be. She later still shows the two the way to the academy’s entrance ceremony, however, although she herself does not go in to watch.
Later that evening, alone in the dark of her room, Yuyu hallucinates a conversation with Misuzu, her Schutzengel who had died during the Koshu Evacuation - the same night that Yuyu had saved Riri's life. Misuzu’s ghost questions why Yuyu is skipping out on the entrance ceremony and notes how with the passage of time, Yuyu has gone from doing the idolizing to becoming the idolized.
The two are each featured in this first episode’s eyecatches.
Episode 2
The next day, Riri attempts to speak with Yuyu again, but Yuyu flat out ignores her. Later during lunch, Riri shares her predicament with Fumi and Kaede, including how she wants Yuyu to be her Schutzengel. After observing SoraKusu training, the group is approached by Miriam who offers to take them to Moyu to learn more about CHARMs. They speak with Moyu, who had coincidentally just finished fixing up Yuyu’s weapon (Yuyu had just taken the weapon and left Moyu’s workshop just moments before the group arrives), and the topic of Yuyu comes up. Moyu is confounded at Riri wanting to take up the Schutzenge’s Oath with Yuyu, but when Riri asks why Yuyu switched from a Brionac to a Dainsleif CHARM, Moyu refuses to answer, telling Riri that she’d have to ask Yuyu herself about the reason why since its a personal one. Moyu’s mood then falls as she claims despite how Yuyu acts outwardly, that she’s actually a very sensitive person, and Moyu almost reveals how Yuyu had withdrawn from her previous legion. Kaede asks why Riri is so fixated on Yuyu, and Riri explains that she wants to know why Yuyu has changed so much from two years ago. Kaede questions whether Riri has the right to know if Yuyu doesn’t want to share it however, and also questions if Riri thinks she can change Yuyu. Riri knows that she may not and can’t, but still wants to know the reason behind the change. At this, Kaede accepts Riri’s determination and then accidentally lets out how she expects Yuyu to destroy Riri’s spirit, Kaede will swoop in to take Riri for herself.
In the hallway, though, the group comes across Yuyu again. Yuyu briefly pauses to look at Riri before ignoring her again, but Riri calls out to her, requesting Yuyu to take the Schutzengel’s Oath with her. As Riri continues to explain how she became a Lily out of her admiration for Yuyu, Yuyu gets angry, though she tempers her tone to coldly tell Riri that making Riri her Schild would only hold Yuyu back. Kaede is infuriated by this and goes to slap Yuyu, but Riri stops her. While Kaede is shocked, Yuyu slaps Kaede, then Kaede actually does slap Yuyu, criticizing Yuyu for not understanding what a Schutzengel’s Oath is supposed to be about. In her anger, Kaede claims that a fool like Yuyu actually does need a pure girl like Riri by her side. Thinking about this for a moment, Yuyu agrees, accepting Riri’s proposal and thanking Kaede for refreshing her. As the realization of what just happened hits Kaede and she laments over her ruined plans of claiming Riri to herself, Yuyu smiles at and vaguely tells Riri to not regret this, to which an over-the-moon Riri replies that she won’t.
In the dark of her room by herself again, Yuyu once again hallucinates Misuzu speaking with her while she touches her own injured cheek. Misuzu’s ghost cheekily quips how Yuyu had deserved to get slapped since she’d slapped Kaede first, then congratulates Yuyu on agreeing to take the Schutzengel’s Oath with Riri. Yuyu gloomily deflects this by saying she didn’t actually want to, but Misuzu amusedly questions this, claiming that Yuyu has opened up her heart. Yuyu claims that she only agreed to take the Oath since Riri wouldn’t understand why she shouldn’t until she saw it fall apart herself, and Misuzu mockingly calls Yuyu scary and heartless. In self-contempt, Yuyu agrees, claiming to be a cruel woman.
Episode 3
The episode starts with Yuyu and Riri having signed their Schutzengel’s Oath. Riri is ecstatic, while Yuyu remains apathetic. When asked what her Rare skill is, Yuyu reveals that it’s Lunatic Trancer but she doesn’t consider it a good skill to have. From a distance, Kaede watches them with jealousy, taking their conversation to be flirting. Fumi takes notes on them for the Weekly Lily News, and Mai is impressed that Riri had managed to win Yuyu over in just two days. Later, while they’re all sitting outside, a Huge appears and Yuyu calmly explains to Riri how Yurigaoka is positioned to be a front line against the Huge. Later, Yuyu begins to train Riri but is incredibly harsh with her attacks, relentlessly beating at Riri’s CHARM and knocking Riri backwards while explaining to her the purpose of CHARMS and Magie and how they are used to defeat the Huge. Despite the beating, Riri remains determined to become a strong Lily and takes it all in stride. When Kaede steps in to criticize Yuyu, Riri insists that she’s fine and tells Yuyu to keep going.
Later in the bathhouse, Riri is revealed to now be covered in bruises and Kaede again asks why Riri is so fixated on Yuyu. Riri responds that she can’t give up now as she still doesn’t know anything about Yuyu. At that moment, Araya, Ichi, and Kusumi - the three 1st year Lilies from Legion Alfheim - all slide beside Riri wanting to speak with Yuyu’s Schild. When asked about what they know about Yuyu, the three reminisce about the Koshu Evacuation, revealing that tragic events from that day led to the disbandment of the 1st generation of Legion Alfheim, which Yuyu was a part of. Riri learns that Yuyu was a 3rd year in junior high school and had lost her Schutzengel during then, too. Meanwhile, in the dark of her room, Yuyu is approached by Misuzu’s ghost again, who notes how rough Yuyu was on Riri earlier. Yuyu responds that it’s just how she is, but Misuzu’s ghost begins to tap into Yuyu’s insecurities, asking Yuyu if she isn’t afraid that Riri will end up hating Yuyu (which Yuyu claims she wouldn’t mind) before flipping it around and claiming that it’s Yuyu who is actually scared of Riri, hence why Yuyu is trying to push Riri away. Yuyu gets upset at this and Misuzu’s ghost apologizes, bringing Yuyu’s attention to blooming cherry blossoms in the distance instead, where Misuzu’s gravestone is.
Through the next week, Yuyu resumes her harsh training with Riri, this time with more Lilies observing them from the sidelines. Internally, Yuyu still struggles with her insecurities surrounding Riri and the possibility that she might be afraid of opening up to Riri. Her attacks on Riri have become even more relentless and fiercer than before. This time, however, Riri manages to finally block one of Yuyu’s hits, which shocks Yuyu. She ends the training for the day, but they’re soon interrupted by an alarm notifying them of a Huge attack. Yuyu informs Riri that since they’re on duty today, they need to go sortie (fight the Huge), but before that, Yuyu fixes Riri’s appearance. When Riri questions whether they have time for that, Yuyu tells Riri that a Yurigaoka Lily must never look slovenly on the battlefield but then accidentally hurts Riri while tightening her outfit as she’s not used to dressing other Lilies up. Not long after, on the battlefield though, Yuyu informs Riri to stay behind and simply watch since she’d just be in the way. Observing this, Kaede gets annoyed at how Yuyu can’t seem to decide on whether to be nice to Riri or not. Yuyu goes to fight the Huge alone and Riri watches in awe, but Miriam and Moyu warn that she’s still in danger since she's actually fighting a Restored Huge.
Just as they say that, the battle gets more intense and Yuyu causes an explosion on the Huge, revealing many CHARMS and thus all the Lilies it had killed before. Yuyu has a mental breakdown at the sight, recalling Misuzu’s death, and activates Lunatic Trancer. This shocks all the other Lilies and Moyu reveals to Riri that Yuyu had locked away that skill after the Koshu Evacuation due to suspicions that she had lost control while using the skill and killed Misuzu herself. Since Yuyu herself can’t clearly remember what exactly happened back then, Yuyu has since been blaming herself for Misuzu’s death. As Yuyu goes berserk, Riri recalls how she remembers Yuyu from back then and decides to go after Yuyu. Moyu objects since Yuyu is in a dangerous state right now, but Riri goes anyway and somehow manages to break Yuyu out of her trance when their CHARMs clash against one another, connecting their Magie momentarily. Seeing what Riri is doing, the other Lilies also begin to criticize Riri, but Riri claims to have felt Yuyu through their Magie. She proclaims how Yuyu once saved her life, and so now it’s her turn to save Yuyu. One by one, the other Lilies jump after her to help out. Riri confronts Yuyu again, reminding Yuyu how Yurigaoka Lilies always need to look their best. Their CHARMs make contact again, creating a Magie sphere between them, and Yuyu snaps out of her state just enough to tell Riri that she must be disappointed in Yuyu and how Yuyu considers herself to be a monster. Riri insists that Yuyu is still her onee-sama despite that and hugs Yuyu, and Yuyu begins to cry as she exits her Lunatic Trancer state, hugging her back as she takes her Brionac to smash a Huge’s arm away. Still hugging, Yuyu tells Riri that they’re going to jump and together they land a final attack to take down the Huge.
After the battle, they visit Misuzu’s gravestone together, and Yuyu tells Riri about how cherry blossoms usually indicate a changing of the seasons. Yuyu shows Riri a picture of Misuzu in her pendant, sharing with Riri that this was who her Schutzengel was. Later in the dark of her room that night, Yuyu begins to silently cry as she recalls more clearly the night that Misuzu died - although this doesn’t last long as Yuyu’s roommate Matsuri had just returned from a trip and suddenly turns on the lights. Yuyu thanks Matsuri after the latter compliments Yuyu on her successful sortie earlier that day, and Matsuri is subsequently surprised at Yuyu being nice again after so long.
Episode 4
After the previous episode’s events, the two become known in the academy as the “YuRi” couple. Riri begins slacking off, content to just be around Yuyu. In dismay at this, Yuyu assigns her to go form a legion of 9 Lilies, expecting Riri to fail as a learning lesson. Riri misinterprets this as Yuyu wanting her to create a legion for Yuyu, though, and somehow manages to recruit 5 other Lilies.
Later, Yuyu lies down in her bed in utter dismay as she realizes she had miscalculated just how easily the sociable Riri could actually recruit people.
Episode 5
Yuyu has begun to feel bad for what she perceives as always receiving from Riri and never giving back to her.
Not long after, she discovers that Riri’s birthday is coming up the very next day. In a state of hurry, Yuyu goes around asking several other Lilies as to what Riri might like from her birthday, but everyone simply says that Riri will definitely like whatever Yuyu gives her - although they do also mention that Riri really likes ramune. Yuyu is in dismay that ramune is just a drink, though she still buys and gift wraps ramune candy for Riri.
Early the next day, Yuyu then heads out to Riri’s hometown of Koshu to search for ramune to bring back. She buys two bottles to bring back to the academy, imagining sharing drinks with Riri, but along the way, she gives them away to two upset children. By the time she arrives back near the school, it’s already dark outside. Thankfully, she comes across Mai and Tazusa, who then notice a vending machine with ramune in it - although Mai also tells Yuyu that Riri has been lonely all day since Yuyu has been gone the entire day for her birthday.
Yuyu gives her gifts to Riri, who is extremely happy about it, and then Riri requests a hug from Yuyu as another gift. Yuyu enjoys the hug so much that she accidentally hugs back too hard and causes Riri to pass out. Mai and Tazusa then reveal that they want to join Riri’s legion, as one last birthday gift from Yuyu to Riri - giving Riri enough members to form a proper legion.
Episode 6
Riri’s legion becomes known as “Team Hitotsuyanagi,” after Riri’s surname, despite Riri’s insistence that the legion is actually for Yuyu. The team nominates Riri as captain and Yuyu appoints herself as vice-captain, pointing her CHARM at Riri and telling her that she won’t tolerate any slacking off from Riri.
Yuyu then takes the team out to observe Legion Alfheim demonstrate the Neunwelt Tactic, but Legion Alfheim is forced to withdraw when their Neunwelt Tactic shot fails to eliminate the Huge. Riri leads Team Hitotsuyanagi to step in to buy time, but Yuyu freezes on the frontline upon seeing her old Dainsleif CHARM inside the Huge. Riri leaps to Yuyu’s defense and gets caught by the Huge’s arms. Thinking she’s failed to protect Riri, Yuyu loses control of herself and activates Lunatic Trancer again.
Meanwhile, Riri is revealed to be safe, having been saved by the other members of their team. Seeing Yuyu in her state, Riri jumps in to stop her again. She hugs Yuyu again like before, then takes her to an abandoned building, where Yuyu breaks down in tears thinking she’s not worthy of being Riri’s Schutzengel. Riri comforts Yuyu and they touch foreheads, with Riri telling her that she’ll stop Yuyu’s Lunatic Trancer state no matter how many times Yuyu activates it, and even if Yuyu stabs her. After Yuyu calms down, the two return to the battlefield and attack the Huge together.
Team Hitotsuyanagi charges their own Neunwelt Tactic, and together, Riri and Yuyu land the final shot on the Huge.
Episode 7
Riri comes across a strange yellow-green blob on the beach, which reveals a mysterious girl inside.
Not long after, Riri becomes attached to the girl, even becoming her caretaker, and has to temporarily step down from legion duties. While outwardly supportive of this and praising Riri’s compassionate nature, Yuyu is jealous that Riri is now focused on this mysterious girl instead. Nonetheless, Yuyu bears it, until one day Riri returns, immediately clinging onto Yuyu and lamenting how it’s been so long since she’s seen Yuyu - much to Yuyu’s delight.
Soon after, however, the mysterious girl pops up on Yuyu’s other side, having been released from treatment and enrolled as a Yurigaoka Lily herself. Yuyu introduces the girl to what scones are, and then the girl asks if Yuyu is her mother or father, and Yuyu denies both.
The girl then says that Riri had named her Yuri, and Yuyu nearly spits her tea out as everyone realizes that Riri had named the girl after her and Yuyu’s couple name. The team jokes how Yuri is like a child born of Yuyu and Riri’s love, especially with how motherly Yuyu has been interacting with Yuri. To Riri’s dismay, Yuri’s name gets officially added to Team Hitotsuyanagi’s roster, while Yuyu calmly accepts this.
Episode 8
Yuri sniffs every member of the team and tells them that they all smell sad except for Riri, and that Yuyu’s sad and lonely scent changes to a happy one when Riri is around.
Later, at the Yurigako battle competition, Yuri gets signed up to fight a Huge-roid, which causes Riri to panic until Yuyu calms her down, telling her to believe in and to watch Yuri. To everyone’s surprise, Yuri mimics Yuyu’s battle stance before fighting the Huge-roid, then repeats exactly the very same fighting tactics that Yuyu had once taught Riri as a beginning Lily.
This episode’s first eyecatch features Yuri with Yuyu and Riri standing together in the distance behind her.
Episode 9
The next day, a capture order is sent out for Yuri, who has been revealed to be a synthetic Lily created from Huge cells. While Riri is defending Yuri from the three student council Lilies who have come to take her away, Yuyu takes the chance to hug Riri, whispering to her to take Yuri and flee to a deserted town in the west where Yuyu will come find them later.
Riri then backs up from Yuyu, who has to pretend to still be on the student council’s side for the time being, and flees with Yuri. Yuyu then heads back to inform the rest of Team Hitotsuyanagi of her personal order as vice-captain to find Riri and Yuri first and protect them from being captured. At the end, the capture order is rescinded right when the team finds the two again. A Huge suddenly appears though, and having been inspired by the other Lilies, Yuri goes to defeat it at the cost of her own life.
This episode’s first eyecatch features Yuri hugging a pillow with tiny dolls of Yuyu and Riri next to her.
Episode 10
Riri is arrested, to be made an example, so that those outside Yurigaoka don’t end up antagonizing all Lilies. As her Schutzengel, Yuyu is allowed a brief 10-minute visit, during which she discovers just how depressed Riri has become and notices her missing hair tie. Wanting to do something to cheer up Riri even just a little bit, Yuyu asks Team Hitotsuyanagi for their help to find the hair tie.
After several days of failure, the other Lilies at the academy hear about what they’re trying to do and help them the day right before Riri is to be released from confinement. They supposedly successfully find the hair tie and return it to Riri, but Riri recognizes it as a dupe immediately.
Nonetheless, Riri is grateful for their efforts, then begins to cry as she finally openly grieves Yuri’s death, with Yuyu hugging her and telling her to let it all out. In the epilogue, Riri and Yuyu go to pay their respects at Yuri’s grave, then at Misuzu’s grave. To Yuyu’s horror, though, she begins to hallucinate Misuzu, and the ghost observes and greets Riri.
Episode 11
The episode starts with Yuyu in utter distress as her hallucinations of Misuzu have come back and much more frequently than before. Misuzu’s ghost speculates that she’s a manifestation of Yuyu’s guilt after Yuyu wasn’t able to save Yuri and let Riri’s heart be hurt. She pinpoints that despite Yuyu telling everyone that it’s no one’s fault, Yuyu blames herself. Meanwhile, Riri has been forcing herself to wake up early to go train.
On her way out her room, Riri is spotted by Shizu and explains to her that while at first she’d come to Yurigaoka out of admiration for Yuyu, Riri has now refocused her goal to becoming a strong Lily that protects people. She goes to visit Yuri’s gravestone first and comes across Fumi paying her respects there, who comments on how Riri appears to have become stronger. Riri thinks if she is, then it’s thanks to Yuyu, though.
Not long after, everyone else on Team Hitotsuyanagi besides Miriam (who’s busy assisting Moyu) and Yuyu also gather around Riri. Despite having the majority of the team around, Riri is crestfallen due to not having seen Yuyu around lately. In fact, the last time Riri had seen Yuyu was when the two of them had visited Yuri’s gravestone in the previous episode.
Meanwhile, Yuyu gets summoned by Moyu who informs her that there’s speculation that Misuzu actually had the Rare skill Charisma and that she used it on Huge instead of Lilies. Yuyu leaves the room, having a flashback to when Misuzu once expressed sympathy for the Huge, comparing Lilies to the Huge, except with hesitation and weakness in their hearts. She snaps out of it when Riri suddenly calls out to her, grabbing her wrist. Yuyu turns to face the smiling Riri but freezes in horror when Misuzu’s ghost suddenly appears besides Riri, reaching out to touch her face as she greets her, remarking how she hasn’t seen Riri since the graveyard visit.
When Yuyu doesn’t respond, Riri awkwardly shares how Team Hitotsuyanagi is going to throw a ramune party and asks for Yuyu to come, too. Unable to look Riri in the eyes, Yuyu apologizes and makes to leave but Riri grabs at her again, telling her to wait. Misuzu’s ghost appears again, very close to Riri, complimenting Riri on her ability to get close to Yuyu. Tapping into Yuyu’s fears, the ghost says that it’s because Riri probably has Charisma, too. Yuyu tells the ghost to stop, but Riri thinks Yuyu is telling her that and lets her go in hurt.
Without another word, Yuyu walks away, leaving Riri behind. The ghost appears again in Yuyu’s room behind a miserable Yuyu, telling her that maybe Yuyu attracts Lilies with Charisma and suggesting that perhaps Yuyu didn’t choose to accept Riri like she thinks she did.
At that moment, a Huge nest fires three mysterious objects into the sky that are tracked to be targeting Yurigaoka, and so an evacuation order is issued to all the Lilies. While evacuating, Riri looks for Yuyu but can’t find her. She asks Kaede who gets worried upon realizing that Yuyu wouldn’t just evacuate first and leave Riri behind. Riri recalls Yuyu’s last words to her and realizes that Yuyu had actually been telling Misuzu to “stop” and that Yuyu was still mourning Misuzu.
Not long after, the Huge land and disable every Lily’s ability to use their CHARM except Riri’s, and Riri decides to head back to investigate the situation. Misuzu’s bind rune appears above the Huges. Back in her room, Yuyu recalls a time when Misuzu had possibly manipulated her memories and Misuzu’s ghost asks Yuyu what she thinks happens to those who can’t accept themselves. At the same time as the ghost, Yuyu says they hate themselves and everything else.
As her Lunatic Trancer partially activates, she says Misuzu had cursed herself, then turns around in surprise when Riri appears at her room’s window sill. Riri jumps in, telling Yuyu that she’s here to retrieve Yuyu, but Yuyu refuses saying that she needs to stay and fight. Riri insists they escape together though, and Yuyu has an outburst, shouting at Riri to not give her orders and angrily asking if Riri is going to control Yuyu with her Rare skill, too. Riri is bewildered by this, and Yuyu goes on to admit that she’s been seeing hallucinations of Misuzu and is broken. Riri asks Yuyu to clarify, and Yuyu says that Misuzu cursed everything, making this all a trap, and that she has to go defeat the Huge that have landed.
She raises her CHARM at Riri and tells her to escape alone, but Riri points out that there’s no Magie in the CHARM and knocks the CHARM out of Yuyu’s hands. Riri angrily tells Yuyu that she can’t go fight, and regardless of Rare skills or traps, Riri will be the one to protect Yuyu this time and go fight. Yuyu agonizes that Riri can’t beat Misuzu, but Riri insists that the Huge are not Misuzu before running back to the window to leave. Yuyu cries out to Riri to wait, but Riri only looks back briefly to bid Yuyu farewell before jumping away as Yuyu reaches for her. As Riri confronts the Huge alone, Yuyu remains conflicted in her room, looking at both the window Riri had left from and down at her broken CHARM, before recalling that her old Dainsleif CHARM is still at the school.
Episode 12
Facing the Huge, Riri can detect a lot of hostility and hate from it, feeling its waveform to be much like Yuyu’s Lunatic Trancer. Off-campus, Moyu says that the waveform would have affected the Lilies too if they hadn’t evacuated, and the scene jumps to Yuyu who is being very much affected by it as she struggles to make her way to where her old Dainsleif is located in Moyu’s workshop. She grabs onto its handle and notes how the CHARM still instantly recognizes her, then runs back out to Riri’s aid, blocking an attack before it can hit Riri. Riri is in shock, noticing how Yuyu has both fully activated her Lunatic Trancer and is using her old Dainsleif now. Riri is also stunned that Yuyu is protecting her while in her Lunatic Trancer state this time, though she quickly gets up to run after Yuyu when Yuyu goes off to continue attacking the Huge alone. Riri clashes her CHARM against Yuyu’s Dainsleif, telling Yuyu to fall back, and the force from their blow neutralizes some of the Huge’s barrier, making it smaller so that the evacuated Lilies can use their Magie again. At Shenlin’s suggestion, Team Hitotsuyanagi decide to try charging a long-range Neunwelt Tactic shot for Yuyu and Riri to use.
Meanwhile, after their CHARMs clashed, Riri momentarily passes out and is carried down safely to the ground by Yuyu, who is no longer in her Lunatic Trancer state. When Riri comes to, Yuyu is still holding onto her, is smiling warmly at her, and asks if she can still fight. Riri says yes, and after Yuyu says there’s only so much the two of them can do though, Riri says they just need to buy time until the other Lilies figure out a way to beat the Huge. Yuyu agrees, and as she’s saying that Yujia fires a Magie sphere shot through the air above them, and they both exclaim out in realization that Team Hitotsuyanagi has initiated the Neunwelt Tactic.
While the other Lilies observe this, Moyu is in shock that Yuyu and Riri are still able to fight, and Matsuri speculates that it’s because of Riri’s Charisma, which Riri had likely used before when suppressing Yuyu’s Lunatic Trancer and is thus probably similarly interfering with the Huge’s barrier. As the team almost finishes charging the Magie sphere, Yuyu tells Riri that she’ll receive it and then pass it to Riri for the finishing shot, but then the Huge steals it. Seeing that their tactic has failed, Yuyu tells Riri to run, but Riri stubbornly refuses and tells Yuyu to run instead before jumping after the stolen Magie sphere. Yuyu jumps after her in irritation, saying how Riri never listens to her as they both fight the Huge together, and Riri is in dismay that this is how Yuyu sees her. Yuyu doubles down on it being the truth, saying how Riri always runs off and leaves Yuyu behind before she knows it, though she smiles fondly as she quietly adds that Riri also puts more effort into other people than herself.
Riri then catches the Magie sphere but it's corrupted, so Yuyu knocks it away from her, injuring her own hand in the process. The two then watch as all the other Yurigaoka Lilies continue passing around the Magie sphere for them. Seeing Yuyu’s injured hand, Riri apologizes for her recklessness, but Yuyu simply smiles at her and Riri gets the memo, overlapping her hands around Yuyu’s as the two jump up to receive the Magie sphere together. The Magie sphere gets absorbed into the Dainsleif, and together, Yuyu and Riri use it to slice the Huge in half.
They both fall into the waters, with Yuyu checking up on Riri, before they both look up at the clear sky above them. In an unexpected hot spring that shows up in the ruins of the school, Riri tells Yuyu that she feels her injuries stinging all over, and Yuyu tells her to focus on the water instead of her injuries. She then tells Riri to hurry and get into the water so as to not get cold, and Riri happily slides over to Yuyu, leaning against her.
Later, Riri and Yuyu are informed about the location of an ultra-class Huge thought to be the nest’s ruler at the bottom of the sea. Riri is assigned the mission of eliminating it with the Dainsleif loaded with a bugged spell to overwrite Misuzu’s spells, since only a Lily with Charisma can inject the bug. Unsure, Riri asks what even is Charisma, and Moyu explains but also says that Riri probably has a Rare skill at an even higher level than Charisma given how she’d boosted all the Lilies in today’s battle.
Although aware that the mission must be carried out soon, Yuyu notes how it’s still a very dangerous one. Riri then thanks the Acting Chairman for standing up for Yuri to the end earlier and agrees to take on the mission, not wanting anyone else to share Yuri’s fate or more Lilies to have to grieve their friends. Sharing Riri’s wish, Yuyu then declares that she’ll accompany Riri on this mission. At Riri’s surprise, Yuyu tells her that as long as the two of them care for each other, then they’ll definitely come back. She then determinedly tells Riri that she will protect her. Happy to hear that, Riri tells Yuyu that she’ll protect her, too. The three student council Lilies then apologize for always putting the two through hardships, to which Yuyu tells them that they’re just doing their duty.
The two are sent to the bottom of the sea where they hold onto each other and the Dainsleif as they plunge the CHARM into the Huge. Water starts flooding around them and they call out to each other before joining hands, though the water breaks them apart as they become submerged. They reach for each other again and momentarily kiss as they untie each other’s uniforms, turning them into one giant life support bubble. Riri briefly dreams of Yuri, who promises to get her and Yuyu back to everyone else, then thanks Riri as Riri begins to tear up.
Riri wakes up inside the bubble to the sound of Yuyu’s voice, who tells Riri that they’ve succeeded in their mission and are on their way back to everyone now. Only hearing Yuyu’s voice, Riri closes her eyes, saying that it feels like she’s wrapped up in Yuyu, and so Yuyu connects their hands so that their Magie illuminates their bubble, revealing that they are both inside the same bubble. They press their foreheads against each other, and Riri shares that she had briefly dreamed about Yuri while Yuyu says Misuzu didn’t visit her. Riri says Misuzu must have really loved Yuyu, as Riri could feel how much Misuzu had wanted to protect Yuyu in the Dainsleif. Hearing this, Yuyu asks if this means that Misuzu hadn’t intentionally caused the Huge to go berserk, which Riri confirms. What Riri can’t understand, however, is why Misuzu couldn’t accept that she loved Yuyu, though Riri also thinks that Misuzu didn’t curse herself. The two then intertwine their fingers.
Nine days later, the bubble they’re in washes up on shore and they are discovered by Kaede.[1] The two still have their hands intertwined and are in only their underwear, which upsets Kaede as she throws a towel at them. Many Lilies are also there and all welcome the two home, prompting Yuyu and Riri to both smile and announce themselves home.
In the ending, a picture of the two still in their underwear makes the front page of the Weekly Lily News, along with an article welcoming them home from their mission and how they were discovered from their life support bubble. While watching MoyuMiri take the Schultzengel’s Oath, Kaede grabs onto Riri’s arm and upon seeing this, Yuyu side glares at Kaede before indignantly taking Riri’s other arm in her own. Kaede then later tries to take a picture with just Riri, but Yuyu deliberately walks right in front of Kaede. In the episode’s final group shot with Team Hitotsuyanagi being shown all napping on the ground together, Riri and Yuyu are in the top center with their hands intertwined and turned towards each other.
The two are each featured in this final episode’s eyecatches.
Assault Lily Fruits[]
This 13-episode spin-off mini-anime takes place an unspecified time after Assault Lily Bouquet. Each episode is its own self-contained story focused on a different Legion in the franchise. Every episode about Team Hitotsuyanagi contains lots of YuRi, as described below:
Episode 1: Strawberry - Riri has lost her Magie ring and the team is in a panic trying to find it. Yuyu, who is reading a book, overhears and casually mentions that she has the ring. She unamusedly asks why Riri seems so surprised by this when Riri was the one who had left the ring in Yuyu’s room the previous night. Kaede and Miriam’s imagination run wild upon hearing this, wondering what romantic scenario led Yuyu to take off Riri’s ring while in her room. Yuyu berates Riri for her carelessness, then puts the ring back on Riri’s finger. As Yuyu does so, Shenlin and Yujia gush about how it feels like a wedding ceremony with a happy ending while Fumi takes lots of photos of the two and Mai tells them to kiss. Later that day, Yuyu takes Riri’s hand and kisses the ring, telling her not to lose the ring again. This causes Riri to burst in flustered excitement and declare how she won’t ever wash that hand again.
Episode 4: Melon - While the rest of Team Hitotsuyanagi have bought dolls after their own likeness (with the exception of Kaede, who bought out every Riri doll in stock), Yuyu and Riri have dolls that look like each other instead, having entrusted the care of each doll to the other. To Yuyu, the dolls are like a protective amulet. Meanwhile, Riri often sits her Yuyu doll on her desk to talk to her and brings her to bed with her. Upon hearing that, Yuyu thinks of doing the same with her Riri doll so that Riri will be her Schild even in her dreams. Fumi, as the founding shipper of the two, reacts with glee at the preciousness.
Episode 5: Mango - After watching the rest of Team Hitotsuyanagi squabble about body weight while enjoying cookies, Riri asks Yuyu if body weight is really something to worry about. Yuyu replies that maintaining a healthy body is important, but then after Riri notes how Yuyu hasn’t had any of the snacks and asks if she’s on a diet, Yuyu is shocked and embarrassed at having been found out. She admits to having put on a little bit of weight, and so Riri cheerfully breaks a cookie in half to share with Yuyu, claiming how it’ll only have half the calories but many times the great taste. Yuyu doesn’t understand what Riri means entirely but takes her word for it, and the two enjoy their halves of the cookie.
Episode 6: Grape - A lion has escaped from the zoo and not knowing any better, Riri brings the lost lion to a cat gathering spot. Not long after, Yuyu shows up, having frantically been looking for Riri to warn her about the escaped lion. Yuyu is extremely horrified to see the lion next to Riri and exclaims for Riri and the others to get away. In the end, the lion is safely returned to the zoo, much to Riri’s happiness and Yuyu’s relief.
Episode 7: Peach - Riri has decided to put on a Huge costume so that she can sneak up on and attack unsuspecting Huge monsters. She explains this idea to Yuyu, who doesn’t really agree with it, but hesitates to object since Riri is the team’s leader. Riri takes this as a sign that Yuyu is on board with the idea, who disagrees, but still won’t stop Riri. She puts her plan into action and begins to waddle over to a Huge, but the Huge finds her adorable and snatches her away instead. The animation suddenly cuts to a combat clip from the Last Bullet mobile game as Yuyu activates her Lunatic Trancer skill and rescues Riri. (In the gameplay clip, all of Yuyu’s Memoria are different 4 to 6 star versions of Riri in the game.) Exhausted afterwards, Yuyu scolds Riri for being a handful, and Riri frantically apologizes. Yuyu grabs the costume, demanding that Riri take it off, but Riri resists since she’s not wearing anything underneath it. Yuyu is shocked and starts steaming like a kettle as the costume falls off.
Episode 11: Kiwi - YuRi and TazuMai are stranded on an island. Just when Yuyu starts to worry about where Riri has gone since she hasn’t returned to the rest of the group in a while, Riri appears dressed in leaves and lots of fruits. She happily shares how she was taught how to pick these fruits by Mai, who happens to also be wearing just leaves. Yuyu is extremely displeased by this and warns Riri to remember that she’s her Schild, telling Riri to change out of her inappropriate outfit. A few days later, the two are stargazing when Riri suddenly wonders if they’ll be stuck on the island forever. Yuyu tells Riri to not lose hope yet but also admits she thinks it’s possible. Yuyu also admits that it’d be nice to spend the rest of eternity with Riri on the island. She quickly amends herself, saying she was just kidding, but Riri has already latched onto an idea of the two of them joining hands, building a family of their own, and populating the island with their descendants - which completely breaks Yuyu. Later, after Mai appears with goods from the city, Yuyu questions her and Riri then yells at her when Mai reveals that she had used her Shukuchi skill to speed off the island to get them.
Episode 12: Watermelon - Mai gifts a giant toy figure to Riri, but the figure falls over and traps Riri underneath it. A Huge suddenly appears and the team wonders why Riri isn’t there with them to fight the Huge. Yuyu goes to look for Riri and after angrily knocking open Riri’s door, is horrified to find a trapped Riri screaming for help. Yuyu frees Riri then angrily confronts Mai, telling Mai to never give Riri anything without first asking Yuyu. Mai doesn’t remember giving Riri anything though, so Yuyu angrily returns the giant figure back to her. The Huge suddenly falls in love with the figure and takes it home with it. As an apology, Mai tries to give a mini version of the figure to Riri, but a still furious Yuyu tells Mai not to give her that.
Episode 13: Mikan/Mandarin - The team decides to have a wedding-style Schutzengel party for Yuyu and Riri. The two are dressed in wedding gowns, cut a cake together, and basically act as if they are getting married while the rest of the team congratulates them (with the exception of Kaede, who disagrees with everyone calling them brides). Fumi takes lots of pictures, Yujia gushes about how lovely they are as brides, and Miriam expresses surprise at how willing Yuyu went along with the idea since Yuyu doesn’t like dressing in revealing clothing. Yuyu easily answers how since this was her precious Schild’s dream, of course she had to make it come true. She then has an intimate conversation with Riri, telling each other how happy they are and how much they love each other. Fumi and Miriam start melting at the display of affection while Mai tells the two to save the rest for when they’re alone and Tazusa nonchalantly comments how they’re newlyweds, so their behavior is expected. Riri then declares that it’s time for the bouquet toss, but somehow the bouquet ends back in Yuyu’s hands. Yuyu asks Riri if this means that they should hold a second wedding ceremony, to which Riri joyfully agrees to holding as many ceremonies as they want. The team then takes a final group photo, with Yuyu and Riri facing each other happily in the center as everyone (except Kaede) blesses them with happiness always.
Assault Lily: Last Bullet[]
About a month after the anime finished airing, a gacha game was released that is considered to be in the same continuity as the anime. The game includes 4 different types of stories, with the majority of them taking place post-anime and may include references to events in the stage plays that don't contradict what was told in the anime. Each story type has varying degrees of YuRi content, as described below.
Main Story[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
Taking place an unknown amount of time after the anime, the permanently available main story of Last Bullet features both Riri and Yuyu as the main characters representing Yurigaoka, alongside Kazuha Aizawa representing the Herensuge Girls Academy and Kanaho Kon representing the Kanba Girls' High School of Arts. Throughout the story, Kazuha and Kanaho will accidentally walk in, observe, and/or comment on Riri and Yuyu’s closeness. Usually, Riri is unashamed about it and Yuyu is embarrassed when this happens.
The main story immediately opens up with Riri and Yuyu taking down a Huge together.
Event Stories[]
There are always at least a few limited time event stories running in the game, alongside gacha banners featuring the main characters of each story. Most stories are self-contained and if they feature either Riri or Yuyu in the gacha banner, then the stories will likely include them both in the respective story in some way. When the two are included, there is always an emphasis on their close relationship and their bond. If the two are separated at any point, the two will definitely mention the other frequently. When Riri mentions Yuyu, Riri usually does so as a way to encourage herself and stay focused, telling herself what Yuyu would do if she were there with her. When Yuyu mentions Riri, Yuyu usually does so to express her concern and worry for Riri’s wellbeing, wanting to get back to Riri as quickly as possible.
The following are some of the event stories that feature Yuyu and Riri:
- Schutzengel's Oath
- Ensemble of the Eldren Valkyries
- Memory of Lilies
- Dreamin'☆Celebration
- Magical Girl ♡ Miracle Lily: April Fools’ Day 2025 event. Official synopsis: “Riri and Yuri are attacked by a monster called “PUGE” that steals people's happy feelings. The one who appears to save the two is Yuyu, the senpai that Riri admires. The battle of the magical girls to protect everyone's happy feelings begins now!”[2]
Memoria Stories[]
These can only be obtained through limited time gacha or from giveaways. Every 5* and above Memoria story with the two of them in the Memoria artwork is guaranteed to feature their bond, and even Memoria stories that only include one of them in the Memoria artwork may also feature heavy YuRi moments. (Note: Not every 5* and above Memoria have stories attached to them, such as Memorias from the Main Story or Creators Collaborations Memorias.)
As of early 2025, there are 50+ Memoria stories featuring the two. The following are some of the Memoria stories that feature Yuyu and Riri:
- Just to be Close to You (starting Memoria, free for all players) - After Riri gets injured, Yuyu tells her to wait while she goes on ahead to defeat the Huge. Riri disobeys Yuyu’s order and goes after her to help her. Yuyu then begins to act distant towards Riri after they return to the academy. Seeing this, Moyu has them accompany them on a trip to Tokyo, purportedly to escort Moyu, but Moyu means for the two to spend some time together. Initially mad at Moyu for this, Yuyu relents after seeing how happy Riri is. The two are dismissed to go on ahead home first, and along the way, Riri makes a bet that she can get Yuyu to smile by the end of the day. They come across the Huge, though, and Riri gets injured again trying to defend the citizens. Yuyu comes to her rescue, and Riri collapses from exhaustion. On the train ride back home, Yuyu reflects.
- Sweet Moment With You (Riri’s birthday event 2021) - For Schutzengel “training” purposes, Riri feeds a piece of fruit cake to Yuyu, who shyly receives it, then feeds a piece of tiramisu cake to Riri.
- Meeting my Special One (Yuyu’s birthday event 2022) - Yuyu and Riri go on a picnic date together. Before the picnic, Yuyu spends a lot of time picking out the perfect outfit to wear. She goes to the picnic location an hour early from anxiousness, though it all melts away upon seeing Riri.
- Handmade Cookies of Love and Friendship (White Day event 2021) - For White Day, Yuyu asks several Lilies for advice as to what to give Riri. She ends up deciding on writing a heartfelt letter and baking clover-shaped cookies for Riri. The other members of Team Hitotsuyanagi help her get a special envelope for the letter and to bake actually edible cookies. Riri is extremely happy upon receiving the gifts, but before she can read the letter out loud in front of the entire team, Yuyu snatches it back and runs away in embarrassment as Riri chases after her.
- Classic Holiday (2021) - Yuyu continues training Riri, who takes her words of always being on her guard so that she can readily fight the Huge very seriously. The other members of Team Hitotsuyanagi observe this, telling Yuyu that breaks are important too, however. Contemplating this, Yuyu goes around town wondering what to do for a break when she comes across a flyer for a classical concert. Riri startles her by suddenly appearing then, and Yuyu reminisces how she used to go to a lot of concerts with her parents but doesn’t anymore due to being busy as a Lily and not wanting to go alone. Hearing this, Riri asks to go to the upcoming concert with Yuyu, and Yuyu agrees, deciding that teaching Riri proper etiquette in concert settings is also important as her Schutzengel. The next day, they go to the concert together, and they banter as Yuyu tries to keep Riri from being too boisterous indoors. Yuyu explains what song is playing, saying how it suits Riri, and finds herself feeling very relaxed with Riri with her.
Legion Stories[]
Team Hitotsuyanagi’s legion story is a visual-novel style retelling of the first half of the anime. The amount of YuRi content in this is self-explanatory (see the anime section above).
Other[]
There are also a few tutorials with no playback option. In almost every tutorial, Riri starts off by not fully understanding what a game mode is and being very cheerful about it. Yuyu then explains and scolds her for not taking it seriously, and Riri's mood falls a bit as she apologizes. Afterwards, Yuyu feels bad about making Riri feel bad and loosens up on the scolding, encouraging Riri instead.
There are 3 stage plays focused on Riri and Yuyu's early and continuing stories, set in an alternate continuity from that of the anime and the game.
Assault Lily: League of Gardens[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
Released earlier in the same year as the anime, this stage play is an alternate version of the events of the first half of the anime, specifically an alternate retelling of how Team Hitotsuyanagi was formed alongside introductions for the other Gardens in the universe. It’s considered its own continuity, due to contradictions in Yuyu and Riri's early story and how their legion was formed - although events in the sequel plays that don’t contradict the anime are referenced in the gacha game Last Bullet.
Assault Lily: The Fateful Gift[]

Assault Lily: Lost Memories[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
The play opens with the cast performing the theme song “Memories Overflow” with Riri and Yuyu being spotlighted as they sing solo parts in the song. At the end of the song, the two are the last two on the stage: Yuyu takes Riri’s hand, and the two run off the stage together.
At some point, Saaya (who was introduced in the previous play as a villain) is revealed to be Yuyu’s dead biological sister who was resurrected as a Boosted Lily and fights with Yuyu. Saaya gains the upper hand and grabs Yuyu by the throat. Riri rushes onto the stage, shouting for Yuyu and attacks Saaya, forcing her to let Yuyu go but gets hit by Saaya’s retaliatory slash in response. Yuyu shoves Riri out of the way from Saaya’s next attack while the rest of Team Hitotsuyanagi and Matsuri come in to pile on Saaya. Saaya knocks them all back and then focuses on Riri, beating her to the ground. Right before Saaya can deal a finishing blow, however, Yuyu throws herself before Riri, using her CHARM to block Saaya’s weapon as she shouts that she’ll protect Riri. Kotohi turns on Saaya and Saaya then takes on all three of Kotohi, Yuyu, and Riri at the same time. Eventually, both Yuyu and Riri are beaten again and they check up on each other on the floor while the rest of Team Hitotsuyanagi comes in to attack Saaya again.
Once everything is over, Riri and Yuyu talk, and then Riri hugs Yuyu.
There are several manga based on other media in the Assault Lily franchise, namely the stage play and the game. All of them contain a focus on Riri and Yuyu’s relationship.
Assault Lily: League of Gardens -full bloom-[]
This section is in need of major improvement. Please help improve this article by editing it.
Released after the anime finished airing, this is a manga adaptation of the first stage play. It is focused on just Team Hitotsuyanagi's origin story, especially Riri and Yuyu’s early story, with minor revisions and story expansions inspired from the anime that don’t contradict the play’s version of events. The manga is officially published with the “Girl’s Love / Yuri” tag.[3]
Assault Lily: Last Bullet - Secret Garden[]
This is a series of 3 anthologies of stories that take place in between events of Last Bullet that were published between 2022 and 2023. All stories are officially tagged as “Girl’s Love / Yuri” and each chapter focuses on a different pairing in the franchise, starting and repeating with YuRi as one of the franchise’s main pairs.[4] The cover art of the first anthology, Sweet Memoria, features YuRi. The two of them, along with Yuri, are also featured on the cover art of the third anthology, Dreamy Memoria.
~Sweet Memoria~[]
Chapter 1 is focused on them. Team Hitotsuyanagi has just returned from a mission. After everyone sees how affectionate SoraKusu (who had also just returned from their own legion’s expedition) and ShenYu are being with one another in regards to post-mission care, Mai suggests that Yuyu do something nice for Riri, too. Yuyu doesn’t understand what Mai is getting at, however, and instead simply praises Riri before dismissing her from their after-mission review - much to Riri’s disappointment and Mai’s exasperation. Later that evening, after hearing from Mai about what happened, Matsuri approaches Yuyu with questions about how much quality time she’d been spending with Riri lately, mentioning how Riri has been looking lonely. Realizing her mistake, Yuyu attempts to speak with Riri the next day about it but is interrupted by Kaede offering to give Riri a massage. Before Kaede can drag Riri away, however, Yuyu steps in and separates them, insisting to give Riri the massage herself since Riri is her Schild.
When the two are later alone, Riri questions what made Yuyu offer the massage, finding it unexpected coming from Yuyu. Seeing Riri’s reluctance, Yuyu asks if she shouldn’t have, which causes Riri to quickly disagree and insist that she’s happy with the offer. Yuyu then tells Riri that she doesn’t need to hesitate in asking Yuyu for anything, but questions whether Riri finds her unreliable after Riri still seems unsure. At this, Riri finally reveals that the reason she hasn’t been asking Yuyu for anything is because she already thinks that Yuyu does so much for her and that it’d be selfish of her to ask Yuyu, who must be the most exhausted in the legion, for anything more. Upon hearing that, Yuyu is touched by the sentiment of Riri being worried for her. She admits that she is indeed tired, and so, with her tiredness in mind, she asks Riri to be the one to give her the massage instead. Riri agrees, but then partway through the massage, Yuyu turns around, taking Riri’s hands and telling her that while it makes her happy to know that Riri cares so much about her, it also saddens Yuyu to know that Riri equally worries so much over her. Yuyu insists that Riri not be hesitant to ask her for anything, and taking the offer, Riri hugs Yuyu, telling Yuyu that right now she wants to just be close to her. Yuyu doesn’t mind but questions it since she surely smells like sweat. Riri claims its a gentle scent, gentle like Yuyu is, however. She then shares how she just wants to be able to hold Yuyu like this forever and falls asleep, still in the same position. Surprised but warmed by Riri’s actions and words, Yuyu hugs her back, wishing her precious Schild pleasant dreams.
~Innocent Memoria~[]
Chapter 3 is focused on them. Upon returning from a recent battle against the Huge, an exhausted Yuyu is immediately welcomed home by Riri. When Riri notices and points out Yuyu’s exhaustion, however, Yuyu tells Riri not to worry and that she simply needs a bit of rest, bidding goodnight to Riri. Seeing Riri still worried, Soraha explains that Yuyu had to activate her Lunatic Trancer skill and so depleted more Magie than normal. Soraha encourages Riri to go properly support Yuyu as her Schild, then winks at Riri as she leaves. Thinking about how she can help Yuyu, Riri goes to Mai for advice, who suggests a “Magie Exchange” - where a Lily with corrupted Magie can exchange her Magie with another Lily to get it cleansed through physical contact. Riri is delighted at a possible solution to help Yuyu, while Mai is happy that not only will Yuyu feel better, but that Riri and Yuyu will get to spend quality time together - “two birds, one stone.”
Upon finding Yuyu, Riri immediately clings onto Yuyu and continues to do so all day. Yuyu is confused and flustered but doesn’t object, allowing Riri to do whatever she wants. At the end of the day, Yuyu finally asks what’s gotten into Riri to get so clingy, and Riri realizes she’d forgotten to tell Yuyu that she was trying to do a “Magie Exchange” with her. After Yuyu tries to again reassure Riri that she really is simply tired from the battle, Mai and Soraha suddenly appear to insist that Yuyu is actually tired because of Magie corruption, much to Yuyu’s exasperation. Mai and Soraha then drill Yuyu into admitting that she’s been so busy lately that she hasn’t been able to spend much quality time with Riri. So, they gift Yuyu and Riri entry to a private hot spring with Magie restoration properties for just the two of them to rest up in. While relaxing, Yuyu again reassures Riri that she’s truly fine, and that in fact Lunatic Trancer doesn’t affect her as much as it used to since she was able to find a more balanced way of using it, attributing to being able to change her way of thinking because of Riri. She tells Riri that she is her precious Schild and that she’s proud of Riri. While Riri is happy that everyone now trusts and relies on Yuyu, she admits to also feeling a bit lonely. Upon hearing that, Yuyu reiterates how Riri is her precious Schild and that she won’t allow Riri to feel lonely again, holding Riri close to her. Riri is content, wishing they could stay that way forever.

Fanon[]
YuRi is the main pairing in the Assault Lily fandom, on account of both Riri and Yuyu being the main and most focused on characters in the franchise, especially in the anime and the game. It is also the most popular ship in the international fandom, though ShenYu may be even more popular among Japanese fans, as shown by an official poll taken for the 2nd anniversary of Assault Lily Bouquet[11].
Most fans think that it is obvious that the two love each other and joke how everything from the characters’ names (Yuyu and Riri), their official in-universe couple name (YuRi), and even the franchise’s name (Lily = yuri in Japanese) beat it over the viewers’ heads that the two are in a yuri relationship.
After the anime spin-off Fruits released, fans additionally joke how Riri and Yuyu are both definitely “fruits” (a slang term for queer people), especially with the amped up YuRi moments that fans are sure were added just for fanservice. In fact, lots of fans think the naming of all of these was very intentional by the creators. When analyzing the Schzengel’s Oath shown in the anime, fans even pointed out how it was exactly word-for-word the same as a marriage vow - “in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health.”[12]
Despite there being no question that the two love each other, there is still some debate as to whether their relationship should be considered text or subtext, especially in regards to only the Bouquet anime. Some fans think that it’s ridiculous that this is being debated, though, thinking that these fans have too high of standards for what can be considered yuri, questioning why a kiss, a wedding pledge (and later ceremony), and the adoption of a daughter are still not enough.
With the release of Last Bullet, fans joke that maybe the anime was just an ad for the even more explicit yuri that’s in the gacha game, with fans calling the yuri in the game as being overtones instead of undertones. Some fans complain how a lot of YuRi’s relationship’s further development is locked behind the game instead of a proper Season 2 anime, however. Some fans have also pointed out how every official manga for the franchise is officially tagged as “Girls’ Love / Yuri”, with YuRi featured on several covers in a very obviously loving way.[13][14][15]
The Japanese voice cast, including Yuyu and Riri’s seiyuus, are also shippers of YuRi. In an ASMR stream done to promote Last Bullet, after the seiyuus voice acted a script of Yuyu and Riri sharing a bed together, their fellow actors jokingly accused them of making it sound “super lewd.”[16] Also, during a manga festival stream, when the two seiyuus were asked to reenact their characters’ exchanging of their Magie rings for the Schutzengel’s Oath, Riri’s seiyuu says it’s like a marriage while Shenlin’s seiyuu (who was acting as the priest) says it's like a wedding.[17]
In reactions to fanworks, those not familiar with the franchise often compare YuRi to other yuri pairings, namely HomuMado from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and ChisaTaki from Lycoris Recoil, due to both leads looking similar to these yuri pairings’ leads (especially Yuyu = Homura = Takina). Those who are more familiar with the franchise like to additionally compare YuRi to ClaiRae from I'm in Love with the Villainess (due to both pairings having in-universe couple names) and Utenanthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena (due to the numerous references in the anime). Of all of them, HomuMado is the one most compared to YuRi because of both anime shows being made by SHAFT and the two franchises even having a collaboration before.
Alongside YuRi, ShenYu, MoyuMiri, TazuMai, SoraKusu, and Takanaho are also widely considered to be the main yuri pairs in the Assault Lily franchise.

Trivia[]
- “Yuri” (ゆり) is their official in-universe couple name, coined by their fellow Lilies at the Yurigaoka Girls Academy.[18]
- This ship name, which is a combination of their given names, is a homophone for the Japanese word "yuri" (百合) which stands for Girl's Love / the yuri genre in Japanese media.
- In the anime, there are several possible references to Utenanthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena whenever YuRi are shown together.
- In the main ending theme “Edel Lilie”, the first scene shows the two lying on the grass in a “yuri yin-yang pose” like how Utenanthy was often posed, which is a pose that has consequently become common in yuri media.[19]
- In Episode 2, when the Schutzengel Oath is first explained by Riri while she discusses her desire to have Yuyu be her Schutzengel, two faceless women are shown who look like and are posed like Utenanthy.[20]
- In Episode 12, YuRi’s kiss is framed in the exact same way as Utenanthy’s kiss in Revolutionary Girl Utena’s second ending theme, “Virtual Star Embryology.”
- The main ending theme “Edel Lilie” for Assault Lily Bouquet has several symbolic references of a romantic relationship between Riri and Yuyu.
- The first scene of the ED shows them lying on the grass in a “yuri yin-yang pose” (previously explained above).
- Halfway through the ED, two hands join together that are shown with a connecting red string attached to each hand's ring finger.[21] Since Riri and Yuyu are the main characters of the anime and were holding hands at the start of the ED, it is likely that these are their hands. In East Asian culture, this is known as the “Red Thread of Fate” and connects people who are destined lovers.[22]
- Conversely, these hands could represent ShenYu’s hands instead, since Shenlin and Yujia are shown to be holding their hands in the exact same position right after this scene. (Besides this ED still, however, ShenYu do not have a prominent presence in the anime besides being on Team Hitotsuyanagi as side characters.)
- Alternatively, the silhouetted joined hands could be representing both YuRi’s and ShenYu’s relationships.
- The final ED still is an image of Yuyu and Riri in a close near embrace with white lily petals floating around them. This is followed by an animation of the two standing in a field with many more lily petals falling around them and one petal on a close-up shot of their two rings on the grass, a connected continuation of their first scene in the ED. White lilies are the de facto symbol of the yuri genre.[23]
- After taking the Schutzengel's Oath with Yuyu and establishing a close bond with her, Riri begins to call Yuyu “Onee-sama,” which directly translates to “big sister” with a very respectful honorific attached to it but is connotatively used to refer to a highly respected role model and typically used to signal a lesbian relationship in yuri works.[24]
- Notably, in Japan, it is common to call strangers “onee” as a polite way to refer to any older young woman, so the term "onee" itself should not be looked at too closely.[25] Rather, it's the suffix that changes its meaning. If not for strangers, then the suffix "-chan and -san" are used for actual sisters, while anything else is considered gay, especially in Japanese media.[26]
- Many of the tropes used by YuRi are often used in other yuri works, such as Intertwined Fingers and their yin-yang pose (as also mentioned above).
- The two have two duet songs and often sing together and/or one right after the other in parts of their Legion and Last Bullet group songs across multiple music albums that have been released for the Assault Lily franchise.
- Duets: Heart+Heart, Wish Drop (Riri & Yuyu ver. / 梨璃 & 夢結ver.)
- Group songs: (23 songs) Edel Lilie, GROWING*, I won’t let go of your hands (君の手を離さない) (BOUQUET Ver.), Edel Lilie (Last Bullet MIX), Can’t Stop Fruity (きゃんとすとっぷ・ふるーてぃー), OVERFLOW, Neunt Praeludium (Last Bullet MIX), Neunt Praeludium (Team Hitotsuyanagi ver. / 一柳隊ver.), A Miracle in a Bud (蕾の中の奇跡) (Last Bullet ver.), A Miracle in a Bud (蕾の中の奇跡) (Team Hitotsuyanagi ver. / 一柳隊ver.), Let's count the important things (大切を数えよう) (Stage play - Bushiroad version), Connection (繋がり), I won’t let go of your hands (君の手を離さない) (Stage play version), Memories Overflow (想い出が溢れてる), Toumei Diary (トウメイダイアリー), Wish Drop (first version), Wish Drop (Last Bullet ver.), Adabana (first version), Adabana (Team Hitotsuyanagi ver. / 一柳隊ver.), Never Ending Dream, Lily Lullaby (リリィにバブ・ソングを), CONSTELLAT10N, raison d'être
