Yunaki is the friendship between Yuffie Kisaragi and Red XIII in the Final Fantasy fandom.

Canon

Due to the mechanics of the original game, and Yuffie's role within it, it is possible for Red XIII and Yuffie to never meet one another. Players can make it through the entire game without meeting Yuffie, or without recruiting her into their party, as she is a "secret" character. The two do not share very many one-on-one interactions because of this.

In canon material released post-game, however, the two are shown to be good friends. In "On the Way to a Smile", Red reflects on his relationship with Yuffie when he goes to visit her in Wutai. He thinks that Yuffie sometimes sees him more as a pet than an equal, but he also understands that is simply Yuffie's personality. Red believes that he was closest with Yuffie because he was the only one to understand her struggle of wanting to seem more mature. Yuffie is also noted to be one of the only characters that can pet Red without upsetting him.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Yuffie and Red are shown to be very close in Rebirth, with their relationship growing even more after the group's arrival to Cosmo Canyon. As the two youngest members of the party, they share a lot in common. They are both used to being underestimated, and do not like being referred to as a "kid". However, because they are both teenagers they share a sense of wonder and excitement for the world that the adults in the party cannot quite match.

Yuffie and Red are often paired together for quests, most notably the search for the Protorelics in Corel and Nibel. Yuffie and Red both find Cloud being forced into a cactuar position to be hilarious, although Yuffie is less amused when the same thing happens to her. Red, however, finds both the plights of his friends funny and enjoys being forced to hold a cactuar pose himself.

Fanon

The friendship between Red and Yuffie is rather common in the Final Fantasy VII fandom. As they are the two youngest characters and are not often included in romantic shipping amongst the party, it is common to see the two of them simply paired up as best friends. Fans enjoy the fact that the two characters seem to understand each other in a way that the other party members cannot.

Yunaki is the ninth most popular ship for Red XIII on AO3. It does not break Yuffie's top 10, but is still one of her more popular gen ships. The biggest rival for this relationship is the character's respective friendships with Cloud Strife.
