Zartemis is the femslash ship between Artemis and Zoë Nightshade from the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles Fandom.

Canon[]

Zoë is a young warrior who had joined the Hunters of Artemis, an all-female group lead by the goddess, some time before the events of the series. Though none of the huntresses ages are ever specified, their eternal youth and Percy finding out that Zoë knew Heracles while the latter was mortal confirms that Zoë was one of the very first maidens to join Artemis.

Zoë and Artemis first appear in The Titan's Curse after the Hunters of Artemis had seemingly defeated the Manticore. Setting up camp near where the battle took place, Zoë approaches the young Bianca di Angelo and wanted her to talk with Artemis. Together, the two convince Biance to join the Hunters. However, Artemis' brother Apollo arrived at the scene, it is revealed that Artemis had asked him to take pick up her hunters so they would be spared from the danger to come. While Artemis had gone on the prophesied quest about the downfall of Olympus, she left Zoë in charge of the Hunters, showing a lot of trust they gained for each other over the years. However, Zoë grumbles that she would've preferred to go with Artemis instead of having to endure the company of boys.

As soon as they arrived crashing into the lake at Camp Half-Blood, Zoë led the other Hunters to the Artemis cabin. Since cabins are for the demigod children of the gods they're named after, the camp allows the Hunters to stay at their goddesses cabin since it would otherwise be empty considering Artemis' vow of chastity. However, after spending a day competing against the other campers, Zoë is suddenly approached by Apollo's Oracle, speaking a prophecy revealing that Artemis had gone missing and that someone destined to save her. Zoë immediately deduces that she is the one who should save Artemis and decides to take a group of five Hunters with her, but Zoë had to resort to taking another veteran Huntress, the rookie Huntress Bianca, one demigod Thalia (daughter of Zeus) and one satyr, Grover. However, since her fellow veteran Phoebe suddenly fell ill due to a prank by some kids from the Hermes cabin, Zoë reluctantly goes along with only taking three with her. Since Annabeth disappeared shortly before Artemis went missing, Percy secretly followed the four of them to ensure that Annabeth is also found, but when Zoë finds him, she hesitates to allow him along since he could tamper with the prophecy.

Later on, Bianca ends up as a casualty during a fight against Talos, Zoë cries for her and blames herself for her death, since Bianca's potential to become a great Huntress deluded her into thinking she will survive long enough to become her successor as the lieutenant of the Hunters of Artemis. However, when they have to go through the Garden of Hespirides to reach Artemis, Zoë is forced to confront her sisters. When the Hespirides summoned the dragon Ladon to attack her, Zoë tried to tame the beast by having her try and remember her, only for Ladon to sense that Zoë is now one of the Hunters of Artemis and lunge at her. Though Zoë could dodge Ladon's attack, she was still struck by Ladon's poisonous side, Zoë realized that she doesn't have much time left.

When the remaining heroes found Artemis, she was in the process of saving Annabeth by taking the weight of the sky into her own hands after Atlas forced Annabeth to take his place. Zoë runs up to Artemis crying for her and begged Atlas to let her go, even offering to take Artemis' place. But the goddess herself refused to subject Zoë to that fate, but allowing Percy to take her place. Through squinted eyes, Percy saw Artemis and Zoë fight alongside oneanother against Zoë's father Atlas. When Atlas nearly landed a blow on Artemis, Zoë jumped in to deflect Atlas' attack, succeeding in saving Artemis from harm but also having her father toss her to the side against the wall of the cave. When Percy manages to trick Atlas into taking the weight of the sky again, he and Artemis run up to Zoë to try helping her. However, Artemis realizes that Zoë is severely injured in addition to being poisoned, desperately trying to ask anyone present to help Zoë. But Zoë knew that she was a goner and chose to use her last words to apologize to Percy and Thalia for how rude she had been to them earlier. When Zoë was on her last breath, Artemis chooses to turn her into a constellation showing her hunting, doing what she loved in life. After returning to Olympus, Artemis offered Thalia the position of lieutenant of her Hunters, not only honoring Zoë by giving her a worthy replacement but also saving Thalia from fulfilling the great prophecy that could doom Olympus.

Quotes[]

“I can see the stars again m'lady […] …stars.”
— Zoë Nightshade to Artemis before her death

Fanon[]

Zartemis is a very popular ship for Zoë, who had only appeared in one book, yet left a lasting impact on the fandom. Notably, though her hunters had sworn chastity as part of Artemis granting them eternal youth, many believe that Zoë's devotion towards Artemis was romantic in nature.
