ZelSonia is the family ship between Zelda and Sonia from The Legend of Zelda fandom.
Canon[]
Princess Zelda travels back in time unexpectedly and ended up in Sonia's era. Upon waking up, she is startled by the presence of Sonia and Rauru checking up on her and introduces herself as the daughter of King Rhoam, to their surprise as they were the rulers who founded this kingdom while Rauru and Sonia introduce themselves which Zelda realizes something about them.
Zelda is brought to a cliff to view the ancient world and Hyrule, but she is not familiar with its original state and realizes that she has indeed in Hyrule's founding era, though Rauru points out that Zelda's secret stone is the one that amplifies time which made sense, though Sonia had already believed her from the start as she can sense that Zelda has his light power with Sonia's power over time and they have a blood connection with each other. Rauru recalls that Zelda needs to return to the present age, which a concerned Zelda notes that something terrible is happening in the age she came from. Sonia invites Zelda to the castle, which the princess tries to object to, but Sonia promises to tell everyone that she is a distant relative of theirs and to provide her new clothing. She assures her that she will find an answer and wisdom takes its time, which Zelda is humbled. Rauru suggests that they consult his older sister, Mineru, who might be able to help her with how she can return to the present. With Mineru also being at a loss due to Zelda not knowing much about her time power and draconification would potentially cost a person to lose their identity, she advises her with having a teacher to help her gain full mastery of her time powers.
When Ganondorf tried to attack Hyrule with an army of Moldugas, Rauru, Sonia, and Zelda combine their powers, with Zelda's being noticeably stronger than theirs, they create a laser that managed to wipe out the Moldugas in a fell swoop. Ganondorf realizes that brute force alone won't do, but the sight of Rauru's Secret Stone catches his interest. Later, Ganondorf feigns swearing loyalty to the Royal Family and after he leaves, Zelda is left concern about why he is really doing this, and his name is too suspicious to her though both Rauru and Sonia assure her that they know that Ganondorf is not a good person but they are doing this so they can keep a closer eye on him.
As they are having tea together, Zelda accidentally knocks hers over, but Sonia managed to use her time power to bring it back to its original position and notes that she is distracted while she explains that she is still thinking of a way she can get back to her time and wishes that she had the mastery over time like Sonia does. Sonia simply describes Recall as that drawing the memory of an object and returning it to its original position, and it will end up being like second nature as well. She changes the subject and that she is also thinking of someone else that while she wants to get home, she also wants to help them as well, to Zelda's surprise as Rauru tells her that no one can hide anything from her. Sonia is touched by Zelda's selflessness and assures her that she can focus on returning home as she not only has the power over time, but also a sacred power that can dispel evil and they will both be essential to protecting her era and returning home will put Link's mind at ease. When asked about Link, she describes him as being an appointed knight and saved her and Hyrule from a great evil and being brave and dedicated to helping people. Seeing that Zelda had a high view on Link, Rauru and Sonia hope to meet him one day.
Sonia and "Zelda" meet at the balcony and notes that she wanted to meet with her privately and wishes what she would like to speak to her about. "Zelda" tells her that she is far too trusting and throws Gerudo Scimitar at her, but is stopped in midair by Recall as Sonia tells "Zelda" that her behavior is extremely out of character for the Zelda she knows, and she is nothing more than a puppet of Ganondorf and the real Zelda steps out from her hiding place and asks her imposter if she really thought they were unaware of their true natures which "Zelda", who is really Phantom Ganon vanishes with a creepy laugh. However, things take a horrific turn and Sonia is ambushed from behind by Ganondorf, who takes her Secret Stone as she collapses, much to Zelda's horror as she tries to desperately wake her up as Ganondorf laughs. Rauru comes in as Ganondorf uses her Secret Stone to become the Demon King and is devastated by Sonia's condition. As Rauru attempts to fight Ganondorf, Zelda tells him that Sonia needs him, and she helps teleport them away. Sonia later dies from her injuries and is buried in front of a gravestone with a Sundelion Flower. After the Demon King is sealed away and the severely damaged Master Sword having been sent back in time, Zelda undergoes draconification to help repair the Master Sword for numerous millennia.
After Ganondorf is finally destroyed by Link, Rauru and Sonia help Link reverse the transformation of the Light Dragon to her human form before they vanish. During the epilogue, Mineru promises Zelda that she will tell them that she cares before she leaves to join with them.
Fanon[]
ZelSonia is a rareship among the fanbase though it does have its fans. People have regarded Sonia to be an excellent mother figure of Princess Zelda and while Zelda has a good relationship with her own biological mother, she dies rendering her unable to teach Zelda how to access her sacred power which led to Zelda's anxiety and a strained relationship between her and King Rhoam among other consequences. An example of her being a mother figure to Zelda has her being able to teach her how to master her power over time and helping her ease her worries and guiding her without rendering her feeling judged while giving her space before her death and is the reason Zelda mastered her time power much sooner than she did her sacred power which she was forced to figure out on her own.
