Canon[]
The Legend of Zelda[]
Ganon kidnaps Princess Zelda, who has Impa escape and given the mission to find a hero who can save Hyrule. She is attacked by Ganon's monsters, but a boy named Link managed to save her and she sees the person as someone who can save the kingdom and instructs what he needs to do. Link would eventually defeat Ganon and save Zelda from her imprisonment.
The Adventure of Link[]
Years have passed since Link had defeated Ganon. When he saw the Triforce of Courage mark appear on his hand, he visits Impa to ask about it and Impa is shocked to see it and then tells the story of the original Princess Zelda, who was put into an everlasting slumber and entrusts the six crystals to Link to place them in each of the palaces so he can find the Triforce of Wisdom to awaken Zelda. After defeating Dark Link, he uses the Triforce to finally wake up Zelda.
Ocarina of Time[]
Link managed to sneak into Hyrule Castle and speak with Princess Zelda, who tells him everything, from the prophesy in her dream, to her speaking of Ganondorf's intentions and gives him the mission of getting the two remaining Spiritual Stones. Impa appears and tells her that she is the one who protects Zelda and teaches him Zelda's Lullaby and leads him out of the castle without alerting the castle soldiers and tells him that he must head to Goron City as his next destination. After Link gets all three Spiritual Stones, he will witness Zelda and Impa fleeing for their lives and the princess throws the Ocarina of Time into the moat and he tries to protect them from Ganondorf. Seven years after Ganondorf's takeover, once Impa awakens as the Sage of Shadow, she will confirm that Zelda indeed escaped and is safe and he will see her soon. After all the Sages are awakened, Sheik who had been teaching Link warping songs, reveals herself to be Princess Zelda and she apologizes for everything that she had done and grants him the Light Arrow before she is abducted by Ganondorf. Zelda helps Link in escape and battle as Impa and the Sages seal Ganon away.
Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages[]
Princess Zelda senses that the oracles, Din and Nayru are in serious danger and sends Impa to bring them to Hyrule quickly. She runs into Link along with the oracles but in Seasons, Din was kidnapped and in Ages, Impa was possessed to manipulate Link into bringing her close to Nayru and possessed her and abuses her power over time, Impa serves as support for most of the game and after the oracles are saved in the Linked Game, the Twinrova witches will kidnap Zelda, prompting Link to save her and defeat Twinrova along with the mindless Ganon.
Skyward Sword[]
Link and Zelda were the best of friends, especially with her being able to stand up to Groose and helping him get better at flying his Loftwing. She is later pulled down by a tornado and is met with an elderly sage, who puts her in a white dress and gives her the mission to visit the two springs in Faron and Eldin. During the Eldin arc, Link comes across Impa, who knows of Zelda's whereabouts before vanishing. After defeating Scaldera, Link and Zelda briefly see each other again, but Impa insists that she must move along before berating Link for his slowness. Later, Link makes it through the Lanayru Mining Facility and defeating Moldarach and catches up with them, but Ghirahim is after Zelda and Impa fights back and through Link's intervention, Zelda and Impa are able to escape through the Gate of Time with the latter dropping a bomb to destroy it to deter Ghirahim from pursuing them.
After Link accesses the Gate of Time, Impa tells him that Zelda is waiting for him in the back room and Zelda reveals that she is a human incarnation of Hylia and how she kick-started the events leading up to this point and brings the Master Sword to its full strength before going into a crystalized sleep. After Link learns the Song of the Hero from the regional dragons and wishes for Demise's destruction, Zelda is freed and everyone reunites, but it is short-lived when Ghirahim ambushes and captures Zelda and managed to push aside Groose and the old sage as well as the young Impa, leaving Link to pursue them. After Demise is revived, Impa will inform him that Zelda is fine and is resting in the back room. After Demise's defeat, Zelda has fully recovered and they both say good-bye to Impa, who stays in her own time and as they make it back to their era, they meet with the old sage, who is actually Impa the whole time, but she vanishes in death much to their sorrow.
A Link Between Worlds[]
After Seres is kidnapped by Yuga and turned into a portrait, Link requests an audience with Zelda and Impa to inform them of the situation and Zelda entrusts the Pendant of Courage to Link although Impa wasn't too sure about placing trust so quickly. Zelda ended up being right as she and Impa end up being trapped in Hyrule Castle by Yuga's magic as Link found the remaining pendants to gain the Master Sword to chase down Yuga, who already made off with Impa and Zelda. While Impa and the sages' paintings were scattered all over Lorule, Princess Zelda is the only one to be left in Lorule Castle. Impa is saved after Turtle Rock is completed and Princess Zelda, despite still being trapped as a portrait, gives Link the Bow of Light to defeat Yuga-Ganon and is later freed as well.
Fanon[]
Zelinkpa is a very rare ship among those who are within the Zelda community, but it does have its fanbase. Most fans rarely ship them romantically mainly due to Impa being much older, even to the point of being a senior in many games while Link and Princess Zelda are kids or young teenagers, so in the games where Impa is much younger, such as Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, Hyrule Warriors and Age of Calamity, is where it was easier to ship them in this manner. This ship involving the elderly Impa is always depicted as platonic and even has her being a motherly figure to each of them instead.
