ZeusHera is the het ship between Zeus and Hera from Greek Mythology.

Canon[]

Zeus and Hera were two of the six children of the titan couple Kronos and Rhea, alongside Poseidon, Hades, Demeter and Hestia. Kronos became paranoid that one of his children would become more powerful than him, so he decided to eat them whole. However, Rhea managed to save Zeus by only delivering him after Kronos had already devoured the other five. In safety, she trained her son until he was strong enough to defeat Kronos and save her children. By receiving the aid of earth mother Gaia, Zeus managed to cut the other siblings out of his father's stomach, which also killed Kronos. Though other accounts have the Oceanid Metis assist Zeus by giving him a potion that caused Kronos to vomit the other five back up.

After defeating their father, Zeus took Hera as his wife, but not immediately. She had refused his advances numerous times, so one day, when she was heading toward Mount Thornax alone, he created a terrible storm and transformed himself into a cuckoo who flew down and sat on her lap. Out of pity, she covered him with her cloak. He then transformed back and raped her; with the promise of marrying her as his queen. Powerless, she had no choice but to comply. By that time, he had already married, impregnated and "separated" from his former ally Metis, who was tricked by Zeus into transforming into a droplet of water after hearing the prophecy that their son would overthrow him, but that only caused him to be forced to give birth to their daughter Athena by having Hephaestus (or considering later continuity errors, Prometheus) crack Zeus' head open so Athena could emerge fully grown.

Furious of her brother forcing her to marry him and then giving birth without her aid, Hera decided to be the sole parent of her own child. Thus, she somehow managed to give birth to a boy, though her son came out very deformed, so she deemed him a terrible mistake and, in a fit of madness, threw him off Mount Olympus. However, as the years went by, he grew up to be a skilled craftsman named Hephaestus despite having legs that don't function, and he returned to Olympus with a gift for Hera: a golden throne. As Zeus later discovered, the throne was a trap for Hera as she couldn't stand up until she and Zeus promised to give him everything he had asked for - a former apology, a place among the Olympians and, in some versions, Aphrodite as his wife. Zeus was genuinely scared and thus complied with Hephaestus to save Hera, who treated her estranged son much better since then.

Hera's role in myths is often to find out that Zeus had cheated on her (again) with other immortals, nymphs or mortals, then taking her anger out on his lovers (usually sexual victims of his) and/or the children he conceived with them. Despite Hera being his queen, she couldn't anything to stop him nor punish him, though not lack of trying. She conspired with Athena and some other Olympians to usurp him, personally tying him in chains on their marriage bed, but he had the help of the giant Briares and her rebellion failed, forcing her to promise to never fight against him again. But despite their mutual disdain for one another, her status as the patron goddess of marriage meant that she herself could never cheat on Zeus, nor formally divorce from him. Outside of the many demigod-to-full-god children Zeus conceived with other women, he and Hera did occasionally have children together, one of whom is the war god Ares.

Hercules (1997)[]

Disney decided to censor Zeus' infidelities, thus not only are he and Hera depicted as a happy couple, but the titular Hercules is also changed to be their biological son. Unlike the myths (where Hera is the closest thing to a main villain of Heracles' story), Hera genuinely loves Hercules and even suggests Zeus should give him a gift, leading to him creating Pegasus as a companion for his son. Though the family was happy, Zeus' brother Hades was determined to ruin it by ordering baby Hercules to be kidnapped and fed a potion to turn him mortal so he could kill the child. Though Hercules survives by chance as the mortal couple Alcmene and Amphitryon find him before anything worse could happen, Zeus and Hera are nonetheless devastated to watch their son grow up not only not knowing who his real parents are, but also unable to return to them until he earns his godhood back.

Eighteen years later, when Hades puts his plan into motion to overthrow Olympus by sending the titans to kill Zeus and capture the other gods, Zeus and Hera are saved by Hercules arriving on the scenes. The two shower their son with love and tell him how proud they are. Since Hercules was willing to sacrifice his own life to save Megara, the woman he loves, he had also earned his godhood back, thus his parents open the gates with the offer to stay with them. Though the two are disappointed to learn that Hercules would prefer living with Megara than being immortal without her, they still accept Hercules' decision and give him farewell.

Record of Ragnarok[]

Hera does not appear in person in this, while Zeus does. Due to this not much is known about their relationship. Hera does however get mentioned when Zeus is renaming Alcides to Heracles, since it mentions that Zeus renamed him to Heracles in honor of his wife Hera. After this the two become the adoptive parents of Heracles.

The relationship between Zeus and Hera is often seen as a reflection of the attitude Ancient Greece had towards women and their lack of rights. Despite the relationship rarely being depicted positively, some people still ship Hera with Zeus because of her loyalty to her husband, making "what if" stories in which she won the rebellion, kept him as her consort, and forced him to vow to never molest her nor any other person again.
